HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2009-03-19, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MARCH 19, 2009. Every second of every day someone in the world is newly infected with tuberculosis, or TB. Huron County is not immune to TB cases so the Huron County Health Unit is launching a new webpage on the health unit website to give local health care providers and the public information about TB. Public health nurse Donna Parsons says the webpage is needed in Huron County. “While TB is most prevalent in developing nations, we know people travel and move around a lot. We cannot prevent and eliminate TB in Huron County if we’re not also part of a global movement to eradicate TB in developing countries.” Canada has approximately 1,600 new cases of TB each year with more than 40 per cent of these cases occurring in Ontario. The City of Toronto alone has over 20 per cent of all TB cases in Canada each year, almost one newly diagnosed case each day. Tuberculosis is a contagious disease. Only people who are sick with TB in the lungs are infectious. When an infectious person coughs, sneezes, talks, or spits they send TB germs into the air. A person who is nearby can inhale the germs and get infected. When the TB germs cause a person to have a fever, no energy, night sweats, no appetite and a cough for two to three weeks or longer, they are considered to have active TB disease. The TB germs can lay dormant or asleep in the body and cause no symptoms. This is called latent Tuberculosis Infection and is not infectious. The new webpages will include TB resources that help in the prevention, testing and treatment of TB Disease and Latent TB infections. It also links to the Global initiative to Stop TB Worldwide. Parsons hopes health care providers and the general public will check out the TB webpages on the health unit website at www.huroncounty.ca/health. So do you remember the Ray Stevens song about the squirrel in church? Well this is your warning, Brussels congregations, start humming the tune now. We have a religious squirrel in our midst who is church shopping. In the last month a wee rodent has been removed from the United Church and one ran freely from the Presbyterian building. It was dark that night so it was not established whether it was heading Mennonite or Anglican, just be watchful, and perhaps start learning that song. It was a good one. The weather is looking up to be a good March Break for the kids. Warm but crisp, just right for being outside and doing the things that have been unavailable for months – skipping, blading, swinging and just gathering with friends. The community centres and libraries have set up programs to fill in the time if needed. Help the kids check out the options. If you happen to get in the mood to clean, think of the 5Rs as you edit your life. The staff there ask only one thing – is it still a treasure or is it ready for the garbage now? They know the customers and would be happy to tell you if items are saleable. If you don’t wish to ask, pop a bag in with your goods and then everyone will be happy. The size of the store limits the things theycan keep around so think hard, is itsaleable? The Optimist Club is hard at workthis week. Their major fundraiser ison Saturday night. The OptimistClub does a lot of good work in ourcommunity, much of it in private, like good deeds are supposed to bedone. So for all your good deeds to all of us publically and proudly we say – thank you, thank you, thank you. Use March Break well, telling grandchildren stories of their parents, being goalie for the road hockey game, reading books together or digging out the skates or swim suit and being a good sport. Have fun whatever you do. Be on the lookout for that squirrel and spring into action. Bye now, Betty G.W.
