County councillors are being
called upon to spread the word
about the good food available in
Huron.
At the March 4 meeting Jane
Muegge of OMAFRA and Janice
Dunbar from the health unit,
delivered an infomercial on the
Good Food Box and dispelled some
myths about the program.
Dunbar explained that this is a
monthly distribution program
offering “no seconds” but rather
farm-fresh produce for optimal
nutrition.
Muegge said the program, with
the slogan “Good for You, Good for
Me, Good for All of Us” is not
subsidized and every Huron resident
can participate.
The program, she added, does not
compete against local groceries.
“They are supportive,” Muegge said,
adding that one supplies them with
things such as bananas and oranges
to supplement the locally-grown
items in the box.
Dunbar said that there are 11 sites
around the county and last year
2,500 boxes were distributed. “This
amounts to $35,000 into the local
economy.”
The benefits of the program, said
Muegge, are that it supports local
producers, highlights the county and
offers excellent nutrition. An
information item is included to
optimize the ingredients as well.
“The idea of trying something new
is there and the information explains
how to cook and prepare it.”
Dunbar encouraged councillors to
buy for themselves, but also to
encourage participation in
municipal workplaces. She used St.
Anne’s school in Clinton, a
“regular” as an example.
“We also ask that you lead by
example,” she said.
Muegge said that they are hoping
to expand on the program, looking
now into different portion sizes,
recipes, and information.
“The residents of Huron don’t all
know, but with your help we hope to
promote the program throughout the
county,” said Muegge.
