It is not quite six weeks since
Wiarton Willie declared six
more weeks of winter, and we
have enjoyed some spring-like
weather in the last week.
The beautiful warm temperatures
and the rain has certainly taken the
snow away and left the look of
muddy fields and laneways to
enjoy.
The other signs of spring include
the awakening of many of
nature’s creatures. On one of
the nice days last week, the
warmth of the sun brought out
wandering raccoons, skunks,
jack rabbits, Canada geese and
wild turkeys all one morning.
The only thing missing was a
groundhog but I hear they are also
out.
Thankfully a fire at the home of
Holly Mitchell and Mike
DesChamplain, James and Kylie
was discovered in its early
stages last week. Returning
home from work, Holly spotted the
smoke and the Grey Twp.
fire department responded and
were able to contain the damage
to the roof and one bedroom
area. Thankfully the family
suffered no injuries and the house
can be repaired.
Returning from a great grip to
Varadaro, Cuba are Nicole Noble
and Catrina Josling. They
had a great week of weather with
80-plus degrees every day.
They report having a nice resort,
great beach, thirst-satisfying
drinks, and good a la carte
restaurants.
A couple in the seats ahead
of them on the same flight
down, stayed at the same resort as
they were. There were lots of
Canadians at this resort. They
kept themselves very busy
with lots of things to do. They
walked from street 15 to 47 to
go shopping in downtown
Varadaro, and Catrina was
exhausted.
They went swimming with the
dolphins and found them very
friendly and playful. A dolphin show
followed and they performed many
tricks for them.
The girls went on a jeep tour and
since they were standard drive,
Nicole was the driver, with Catrina
and a French Canadian girl on
board. They drove to Mazalan on
the backroads and saw lots of
farm animals and waving
children.
They went snorkeling in a cave
and it was lovely and warm.
Stopping for lunch at a farm they
enjoyed barbecued lobster tail and
saw lots of animals.
Catrina kept busy by helping to
process sugar cane, kissing a bull,
riding the bull and riding some very
skinny horses. Nicole was busy
holding a baby alligator and a giant
tree rat.
The group then went on a 40-
minute boat ride before getting back
in the jeeps for the return drive
home. The girls filled the rest of
their days with swimming and
watching for jellyfish on the beach,
walking, taking pictures, shopping
and watching movies in
Spanish.
There was a change at Winthrop
store this past week with the removal
of the gas pumps. Fuel is still
available at the store, just not quite
as close to the road.We wish Bill Stevenson a speedyrecovery from his stay at Stratfordhospital. Our condolences are expressed tothe family of Gord Nichol. I metGord when I first started helping atthe Legion. He was always thefellow at the door for the manyfunctions and even after his walkingwasn’t that great, he still
managed the steps to come and help
out.
Our sympathies are extended
to the family of Ethel Brewer on
her passing. Ethel has been a
resident at Huronlea for the past
few months and will be missed
by her many nieces and
nephews. I have known Ethel
for the more than 30 years I
have been in Brussels and
have enjoyed her as a customer
for all of them. She and her
husband Joe, were always a
fun-loving pair whenever I was
in their home for a job or
visit.
Ethel was a long-time employee of
McDonald Lumber and worked
there until her retirement. An avid
walker, she would be seen many
times a day, strolling the streets of
Brussels.
Ethel had quite a sense of humour
and will be remembered for the
many delightful skits she and her
sister Mary Lowe performed at
functions in Brussels.
Skiing was on the agenda for
some local folks this past
weekend. The ski resorts report
a good base but with the coming
of spring, it may be soon over.
Heading off to enjoy an outing were
Erin and Grace Robinson.
They were away for the weekend
and had a fun time.
Pete and Suzanne Terpstra
also took advantage of the
weekend to go skiing. The
reports are they had a good time and
Suzanne only has one big
bruise. The kids report having
a fun weekend with their
sitters.
Celebrating 22 years of wedded
bliss were John and Karen Braecker
on the weekend. They went to
Niagara Falls for a ringette
tournament with daughter Allison,
so their celebrating was kept to a
minimum.
The Seaforth Petite girls
ringette team participated
in a tournament in Niagara Falls on
the weekend. They managed to
win the gold medal and girls on the
team for the area included
Allison Braecker, Amy Alcock
and Iris Vander Ploeg. Congrats
girls.
Participating in her first
broomball game since suffering a
broken ankle in October was
Renee Robinson. She plays on the
Seaforth Bantam girls team and it
made her very happy to score the
winning goal of the game that sent
them to the finals. They captured the
silver medal and had a great
weekend.
The Cranbrook dart league had 17
players taking aim at the boards last
week. The high shots were by
Shelley Keffer with a 106 and
Murray Houston and “Doc”
Keith Williamson both shooting
120.
Returning from a week-long
getaway for snowmobiling
are a couple of area families.
Paul, Cheryl, Curtis and Matt Ryan
along with Ken, Brenda and
Scott Dalton spent a week touring
the trails of Northern Ontario.
They went to North Bay and north to
Timmins and New Liskeard area.
It was -31° on Monday morning and
boy was that cold. There is lots of
snow up there and they had great
time together.
I expect to see lots of Winthrop
and Walton-area folk out in Seaforththis weekend for the buck and doefor Brian Dolmage and JessicaCostello. Think green for theweekend. We send out get-well wishes toboth Ruth Shiell and to IsabelleWorkman as both have been under the weather after hospitalstays.Home from a month’s stay in
Florida are Howard and Joan
Bernard. They were in the
Engelwood area and report having
great weather after the first week.
They spent their time relaxing,
reading, making new friends and
renewing acquaintances from last
year. They had a chance to visit with
Murray and Betty Cardiff when they
were near them as well as Bob and
Doreen Raymond.
The Bernards’ return was a
happy one and they were glad
to have a home to come home
to. A van, owned by daughter
Cindy Kikkert, took fire outside
the Bernard home one day.
Thankfully Cindy hadn’t parked in
the carport and thanks to the quick
action by the neighbours and
passersby, the fire didn’t spread to
the house.
A group of women met at
the Walton Inn for a
celebratory breakfast for Jeannette
Robinson’s birthday. Jeannette says
she was celebrating the 28th
anniversary of her 19th birthday. The ladies and lone gentleman of thegroup had a delightful breakfast and gabfest among friends on Monday morning. Joiningin the party with Jeannette wereJudy Beuerman, Brenda Bernard,Marlene Glanville, JenniferVellinga, Karen Braecker, CarolReinink and Shawn Reinink.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week were Melissa Glanville, Dean
Hackwell, Ruthann Hoegy, Andy
Pethick, Nicole Stevenson, Brian
Wilbee, John Braecker, Kaleigh
McCallum, Matthew Campbell, Neil
McDonald, William Ringgenberg,
Jerry Zwep, Fred McClure,
Marianna Ryan, Ruth Axtmann,
Carali McCall, Colton

Little School stays busy
It was a very busy month in the
Acorn room of Walton Little School.
They were learning about the
authors Robert Munsch, Paulette
Bourgeois – the Franklin series,
Marc Brown – Arthur and Norman
Bridwell – who writes the Clifford
series.
Valentine’s Day was an exciting
time for the class as they shared their
cards and treats during the
party.
During the month of February the
Star class was learning about the
letters R, S, T. They had lots of fun
practising the sound/sign nd writing
it out.
They also had a red/Valentine’s
week.
During the month of February the
Butterflies had lots of fun making
Valentine’s cards for their friends
and parents. They also learned all
about healthy food and dinosaurs.
