HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2009-03-12, Page 10PAGE 10. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MARCH 12, 2009.Palmerston hosted a co-ed juniorbroomball tournament March 6-8and a Blyth team ended up as theBantam gold-medal winners afterplaying some very challenging andexciting games.
The Bantam division had six
teams divided into two pools. Friday
evening saw Blyth set to play their
first game against Innisfil, a very
closely-matched contest. Each team
took some great shots on net, but
neither was able to get the ball into
the net.
One of Blyth’s defensive players
took a penalty when aggressively
going for the ball, but the team
played smart and didn’t allow their
opponents to score on the powerplay.
Blyth’s goalie, Bryce Glousher did
a great job covering the net. Triple
overtime was needed to break the tie.
Hunter Broda shot the ball down the
ice and Emilie Hogan scored for the
victory.
Blyth had a big rest and didn’t
play again until Saturday night,
against Mildmay. Within eight
seconds of the game, their opponents
ran in and scored a goal.Blyth was keen to even the scoreand before you knew it, Kelsey Kingshot the ball at the net and AlexSanders was sitting there ready tosend it into the net. Then Derek
deBoer and Hunter Broda set up the
play and Kelly Austin sent the ball
into the net to take the lead.
Blyth held onto the lead until
Mildmay tied it with only four
minutes left. Both teams showed
some great teamwork and fought
hard to break the tie. Blyth earned a
high broom penalty while trying to
control the ball and had to sit a two-minute penalty. Blyth didn’t allowtheir opponents to take advantage ofthe powerplay. After eight minutesof overtime Mildmay scored on abreakaway and earned a 3-2 win.
This would be the only loss for
Blyth in the tournament.
After an early-morning wake up
and trip back to the arena Blyth
played the hosts, Palmerston, on
Sunday morning.
During the first period, King set
up the play and Morgan Bos scored
the first goal for Blyth.
Blyth’s defender received a two-minute slashing penalty and withonly five seconds left in the powerPalmerston scored to tie it.In the second period Austin set upthe play and Broda shot the ball into
the net.
Three minutes later, Palmerston
tied it again.
In the first shift of overtime, Bos
shot the ball at the net and deBoer
tipped it to win the game. This
earned Blyth a spot in the finals
Sunday afternoon.
The championship game saw
Seaforth play Blyth. Both teamsshowed some great plays, excellentpass and ball control. Glousher stoodstrong in net and didn’t allow hisopponents to get the ball into the net. After regulation play there was no
score, so overtime would once again
need to decide the winner. Blyth shot
the ball into the net after three
minutes of play, but the referee
called off the goal and the game
continued. With over eight minutes
of overtime play under their belts the
teams were getting tired, but Blyth
was determined not to give up and
deBoer ran in and scored a goal to
win the tournament.
This was a solid team effort and
for a group of kids that don’t always
play together they showed some real
unity as a team, said coaches.
The defenders were Murray Dale,
Zach Drost, Emilie Hogan, Jessica
Kuik and Scott Jefferson.
The forward lineup was made up
of two lines: Austin, Bos, Broda,
deBoer, King and Sanders.
This weekend the Saugeen
Maitland Lightning Midget AAs
went on a three-game road trip to
Detroit. They played two of
Michigan’s top teams in exhibition
play to get ready for their upcoming
provincial championships later this
month.
The Lightning defeated Detroit’s
Victory Honda 19U team by a score
of 7-2 as Tammy Freiburger,
Wingham, led the way with four
goals. Chelsey Draker, Listowel got
two and Victoria Bertrand, Port Elgin
passed in a single.
The Lightning played extremely
well against the Michigan State
Champions, Belle Tire 16U AAA
team, which is headed off to
nationals this spring. The Lightning
battled to a 1-1 draw in the first
game, but lost 4-1 in the second game
with Diane Bushell, Lucknow,
scoring in both games.
The Saugeen Maitland Lightning
Midget AAs are now headed to
provincials, set for March 27-29 in
Mississauga.
