The Citizen, 2009-03-12, Page 9A group of youths from Blyth andarea calling themselves “Wii not fit,”entered the Palmerston co-edtournament held March 6-8. There were seven teams entered inthe Midget division and Blyth’s first
opponents were Mildmay Teal on
March 7.
Blyth dominated the first period
and scored three goals. Nadine Otten
set up the first goal and Mike
Rawlings scored. Brendon Boven
took a nice shot on net with 2 1/2
minutes left in the period. Courtney
Bos was standing at the net and
tipped the ball into the net to widen
the lead. Defender Greg
Roetcisoender took a nice hard shot
from the blueline a minute later and
scored a goal into the top shelf of the
net for Blyth.
Mildmay stepped up and played a
stronger second half and no goals
were scored in the second period.
Keeper Derek Logtenberg earned a
shutout for his team and “Wii not fit”
walked away with a 3-0 win.
Blyth’s next opponents were the
Windsor Devils. This was a very
fast-paced game. Windsor had a lot
of speedy players on their team and
Blyth had to really play smart to
hold its own against this team.
The Devils scored in the first few
minutes of the period. That goal
would stand as the only goal of the
game and held the win for the
Devils.
The game got a little rough and
penalties were called for both teams,
but neither team took advantage of
the powerplay to score.
Blyth was set to play their next
game against the host team from
Palmerston, on Sunday morning. Inthe first period Blyth’s Brent Drosttook a shot to wrap the ball aroundthe net and Alex Hogan was standingat the corner to tip the ball in. This 1-0 victory earned Blyth a
spot in the championship game
Sunday afternoon.
That same game saw Windsor and
Blyth meet once again. The first
period was very busy and filled with
some great broomball action. Blyth
knew they had to play the game of
their life against their very worthy
opponents.
At approximately four minutes
into the game, Drost passed the ball
back to his defensive player.
Roetcisoender took a nice clean shot
from the blue line and scored to get
Blyth on the scoreboard.
Unfortunately less than a minute
later Windsor scored on a
breakaway. The Devils were able to
break the tie when Blyth’s keeper
came out to challenge the ball and
Windsor tipped the ball over his
shoulder. The remainder of the
period saw several players in the
penalty box, but neither team scored
on their shorthanded opponents.
In the second period Windsor
made some nice shots on net, but
Logtenberg was on fire and wouldn’t
let them score another goal. With 30
seconds left in the game, Blyth
pulled its goalie to try and tie up the
game. Blyth took control of the ball
and took some shots on net, but with
only four seconds left on the clock
Windsor’s keeper made a really nice
scrambled save and stopped Blyth
from tying the game up. Windsor
squeezed out a 2-1 victory.
This game gave Windsor the goldand Blyth the silver and each teamwon a ball cap as their prize.Blyth players showed some nicespeed and ball control and madesome great passes. Derek
Logtenberg did an outstanding job
covering the net for his team. Bos,Boven, Sydney Otten andRoetcisoender stood strong asBlyth’s solid defence lineup.Wii not fit’s forwards made somegreat passes and showed some great
ball control. The forwards were
Andy Bolinger, Drost, Hogan, SierraLamb, Nadine Otten and MikeRawlings with a little help fromMorgan Bos. This team had a lot of fun on theice, as they wrapped up the
broomball season at this tournament.
THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, MARCH 12, 2009. PAGE 9. Team pulls together for Mildmay tournament
After a very successful season the
Blyth Atom Local League earned its
spot in the top grouping of the Local
League playoffs.
Their first game was against
Drayton.
Blyth outplayed Drayton
throughout the entire game with
only one goal to show for it.
Unfortunately the opponents popped
in three. They set off to see if they
could dim the Seaforth Stars. The
boys came out flying and again
dominated the play from the middle
of the first until the final buzzer
went.
Again, they scored only one goal
and unfortunately Seaforth scored
two.
The toughest rival all year was
BCH and the Dogs faced them at
home. For some reason they came
out flat and could never recover,
losing 5-1.
The Dogs next played Drayton at
home. They dominated this game
from start to finish.
Drayton only got six or seven
shots all game. Blyth’s defence
played like they were on a special
mission, and once they started
scoring in this game they didn’t
stop.
They defeated Drayton 5-1.
Sunday they played in BCH and
lost 2-0.

The Brussels Atom Reps faced off against Goderich at home this past weekend. The locals
had a good game and came away with a 4-1 victory. (Vicky Bremner photo)
