By Jo-Ann McDonald
The Branch is saddened to hear of
the passing of one of its veterans.
Comrade Gordon Nichol passed
away on the weekend. He had been
a resident of Huronlea for the past
while.
Gord was a dedicated member of
the Branch in his earlier years and
for many years was the familiar face
at the door for fundraising functions.
Gord was also a member of the
Branch cribbage team that won
provincial darts in 2000.
Our sympathies are extended to
the Nichol family.
The Thursday night darts had 11
players taking aim at the boards.
The first place team was Marlene
Little, Norm Dobson and Gord
Jacklin. In second were Bush
Whittard and Sandra Josling.
The Friday night supper of roast
beef was popular with over 50
people enjoying the meal. This
week will be ham and scalloped
potatoes.
Saturday was a busy day with
Huron County darts upstairs and
euchre downstairs. The Huron
County dart league is winding down
its year with playoffs coming up.
There are over 50 fellows who dart
every couple of weeks and enjoy
their days out.
Euchre is every two weeks at the
Branch. This week there were eight
tables of players on hand. The top
team of the day was Eileen Sellers
and Marie Stewart with 76 points. In
second were Stuart and Lois
Chamney with 72 points and taking
third prize were Vera Lindner and
Reta Davidson with 68 points. The
pair earning low prize was Helen
Warwick and Vera Schmidt, who
won only 45 points. The lone hand
prizes went to Olave Little and Ed
Stewart.
The Branch had two teams away
at District euchre at Br. 412
Kitchener Polish Legion on
Saturday. Sandra Josling, Jo-Ann
McDonald, Jim Brown and Rick
McDonald faired better than Eric
Ross, Norm Dobson, Bush Whittard
and Lloyd Glanville, but neither
team will advance to provincial
play.
They had a fun day and good
cards, but just not good enough.
The Sunday night dance saw a
great crowd enjoy the music of the
Country Versatiles. There were over
80 folks using every inch of the
dance floor.
The silent auction forms have
been sent out and the Branch is
already receiving responses for the
request of items. The auction is
going to be one day only this year on
the Saturday and we are hoping that
Comrades come up with some
exciting and unique donations. It
won’t be long for the next 10 weeks
to slip by, so put some extra thought
into your donation. We are raising
monies for barrier-free accessibility.
Elections are next month and the
Branch would like any Comrades
interested in serving on the
executive to contact the Branch.
New faces, new ideas and a change
in the face of the Legion is ahead in
the upcoming months. The Branch
needs to build on the strengths we
already have and on new ideas for
the future success of the Branch. We
need all Comrades to have a voice in
the Branch’s future, so let’s hear
your voice now.
Contact the Branch if you wish to
be more active in the next years to
come.

Another week gone. We each have
the same 24 hours but our choices
certainly make for interesting lives
and then conversations.
Spring is just around the corner (Ihope) when the ads start for thegarden shows. In fact Wild Thingswas the theme for last week inStratford. Now in its ninth year theLung Association uses this time forfundraising and education. Many happy people were seenwandering admiringly at blooms, tools, seeds, metal and stone work
and other artistic endeavours. Paths
and water in a garden can be
fashioned in many forms and the
businesses there were ready to chat.
Don and Sue McNeil will be ready
to set up their garden in the newest
way. A vintage truck, not in nearly asgood shape as any Don would have, was used as the point of interest withpaths, bushes and plants all makingit seem to be in its natural place. Ahome in Perth already has one set inthe front yard – looks good.Several folks from here enjoyedthe show.Papua, New Guinea was the
country of focus when the World
Day of Prayer was held in several
spots in our area. This is an inter-
church council committed to “united
prayer and action: and are
committed to ecumenism, spiritual
growth, social justice and woman’sissues around our world. Our community was welcomed byDuff’s United Church on Fridayevening, linking us with 170 othercountries who gathered once againon the first Friday of March as wehave since 1922. Pretty neat. The Watson guys were on tour lastweek. They popped south to check
on Jim and Amanda who call Port
Charlotte home. John, Joe and Ralph
enjoyed a warm welcome as well as
good weather and a very warm pool
and are now back to reality.
It’s easy in this house to remember
to dig out the Irish duds. We
celebrate birthdays next week for
Lindsay, Val and Julie, so Irish is
appreciated here.
Have a good time with March
Break.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
