THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2009.The Women of LondesboroughUnited Church met in the Sundayschool room on Monday, Feb. 16.Three young girls from thecongregation who were winners inthe Hullett school, public speakingday were on hand. Two sisters, Jazlyn and Avery Wright, from the primary division recited their poems. Jazlyn offered the poem, Lousy Catchers’ Mitt and Avery repeated the poem, I Wrote a Lousy Poem. Valerie Westerhout had all the ladies laughing as she delivered her speech, Laughter As a Medicine. The theme for the year for the Huron Perth Presbyterial of the UCW is “touch the earth lightly”. The idea of ‘going green’ was the theme for the rest of the programthat evening.Another girl from the area, LexiAitkin, who also gave a winningspeech at the school was present togive her speech, Going Green. Herspeech gave many suggestions that everyone could incorporate into their daily living to help heal the world. The hymn, Touch the World Lightly, was sung and Lena Nesbitt read Psalm 65. A dialogue about a chance meeting at the grocery store between Rena Kolkman and Barb Bosman offered many more ways to conserve and not squander the world’s resources. Jane Hoggart found a humorous story, Potty Talk for the Romantically Inclined, thatcombined conservation suggestionswith Valentine’s Day. The ladiespresent also offered their own tipsfor how to be better stewards ofGod’s world. Then Barb read, You Are Special, by Max Lucado. Although it is a children’s book, the idea that everyone must recognize their own worth regardless of what others think is important to adults as well. When the snow arrived last week, I heard one man bemoan the fact that we are now experiencing the third winter of this winter. I thought that summed up this season. As a result many activities were cancelled in the past number of days. One of those was the morning service at Londesborough United Church. The 2008 annual meeting has been rescheduled for Sunday, March 1. The lunch following the church service that morning will be provided. You do not need to bring potluck as was suggested in last week’s column. Several other announcements were noted in the order of service not used. Next Sunday, March 1, the sacrament of communion will be observed at Londesborough United. Confirmation classes will begin on Thursday, March 5 at the churchfrom 4 - 5:30 p.m. Mentors are toattend the meetings as well. The cancelled official boardmeeting of last week will be held onTuesday, March 10 beginning at7:30 p.m. New members of the board are asked to attend. The junior youth group will meet at the Vanastra Rec Centre on Friday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. for swimming and devotions. The cost is $2 per person. The Londesborough family movie night will also be held at the church the same night beginning at 7 p.m. The feature movie is Surf’s Up. Saturday, March 7 the Sunday school will hold a skating party at the Blyth arena from 4 - 5 p.m. Everyone is invited to take a turn around the ice. Lunch of chili and hot dogs will be provided. You are asked to bring along finger food dessert items. Turnberry Central School will host the ARC meetings this Thursday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. A couple of weeks ago I mentioned some folks in the village who were dealing with winter woes. Someone not seen by her neighbours for some weeks is Rosemary Johnston. Seems she slipped or tripped on her own steps on Monday morning as she headed for work and broke her foot. She is moving about with the help of an air cast. Jim, too, is dealing with a nasty medical diagnosis that may keep him close to home for a while as well. Little shopper Alexis Bernier, three, made her choices at the used book sale in Londesborough this past week at Radford’s. The fundraiser was held to support the Cullen family as they cope with illness. Organizer Brenda Radford said the sale continues until Saturday with new books arriving every day. To date $1,100 has been raised. (Vicky Bremner photo) Brave crew The Londesborough Lions braved the elements on Saturday to serve breakfast to the folks who turned out to participate in the Snowarama, hosted by the North Huron clubs. The men were kept busy as the sudden return of winter had enthusiasts keen to hit the trails.
