Some folks found an energetic way to ignore the downside
of winter and enjoy it this past weekend with the Blyth Lions
first annual snow volleyball tournament on Saturday
afternoon at Lions Park. The Bikini Babes were among

The Brussels Atom Reps travelled
to Mitchell on Sunday, Feb. 15.
Brussels was down 2-0 going into
the second period. Then Logan
Kellington netted one, followed by a
second a few minutes later.
Delayna Smith got on a
breakaway and netted the third goal
for Brussels. After a mad scramble
at the Mitchell net, Wyatt Machan
tipped one in the top shelf.
Brussels skated away with a hard-
fought 4-2 victory.
Goalie Derrick Waechter was
solid in net.
The Brussels PeeWee Local
League played against Monkton
Sunday, Feb. 15 on home ice.
The game was intense as the play
moved end to end the entire game.
Many shots were taken, but no one
made it past either of the goalies in
the first period.
In the second period, the game got
rough. The Brussels players landed
in the box.
Tim Waechter got a breakaway,
and took a shot that bounced off the
goalie’s glove. Waechter was ready
and pushed the rebound in to take a
1-0 lead.
It was midway through the third
before Monkton was able to tie it
up.
Goalie Austin Jamieson-Johnston
made some amazing saves
throughout the game.

PeeWee Local League plays
to tie against Monkton
Blyth PeeWee Local League Dogs
battled the BCH1 team on Monday
night, Feb. 16.
After waiting a week to get started
at their playdowns the PeeWees
started with a strong win over the
visiting IceDogs.
After some solid play in the BCH
end Curtis Raynard knocked home a
loose puck.
Blyth continued its solid play,
heading into the third with a one-
goal lead. Late in the third Josh
VanSoest added an insurance goal
with help from Trystan Weber and
Raynard.
Goalie Dustin Treble took care of
the netminding duties, making
several great stops to preserve the
shutout.
Home ice
Brussels’ own Doug McArter (Number 23) took to the ice
with his K-W Sidewinders teammates in a fundraising
sledge hockey game against the Simcoe Bears in Brussels
on Saturday night. Proceeds were going to the local minor

There were 8 1/2 tables of shoot in
play on Friday, Feb. 13. Desserts
were enjoyed before playing shoot.
The winners were: high pink card,
Dorothy Carter; second high pink
card, Helen Casemore; most shoots,
Pat Thomson; high white card,
Lloyd Appleby; second high white
card, Joanne McDonald; most
shoots, Ross Taylor.
The next shoot is Friday, Feb. 27
at 1:30 p.m.
Ron and Trudy Taylor greeted
worshippers at Knox United Church
on Sunday, Feb. 22. The Blyth
Scouts and leaders were welcomed
to the service. The hymn sing
selections were Jesus, You Have
Come to the Lakeshore, and Shall
We Gather at the River.
Rev. Tom Murray welcomed the
congregation on the Last Sunday
After Epiphany. Rev. Murray lit the
Christ candle, which was followed
by the call to worship read
responsively after the singing of the
opening hymn, Thine Is the Glory.
The Prayer of the day was read in
unison.
The senior choir sang I Am His
Lamb.
The children five and under went
to the front pew. Rev. Murray asked
them different ways in which people
grow. They replied fittingly. People
all belong to God no matter if they
are big or small, said Rev. Murray.
They grow by learning and begin to
understand what faith is all about.
The children adjourned to Sunday
school.
Give To Us Laughter was the
children’s hymn.
The gospel acclamation was read
responsively.
The sermon was entitled God’s
Word to Us - Our Time and the
Future.
Ken Procter and Lila Procter took
up the offering which was followed
by the singing of the hymn, Your
Work, O God, Needs Many Hands.
The Lord’s Prayer was said.
The closing hymn was Will You
Come and Follow Me.
The choral benediction Go Now
in Peace concluded the morning
worship service.
Elizabeth Procter accompanied
the choir and the hymns.
On Friday, Feb. 27 the Calvin
Brick Women will meet at Yvonne
Coultes’ at 9:30 a.m.
The beef pies will be started at
Donna Shaw’s on Tuesday, March 3
at 9 a.m. and finished on
Wednesday, March 4 at the church.

On Friday, March 6 the World
Day of Prayer Service will be held
in the basement of Knox United
Church at 2 p.m.
After the service lunch and
fellowship followed in the church
basement.
The February meeting of the
Belgrave W.I. began with the
president, Nancy Jardin,welcoming
11 members and 22 guests to the
potluck lunch.
Mel Coultes took pictures of some
members with a decorated cake to
celebrate the 98th birthday of the
Branch.
Audrey Fenton began the program
by mentioning four special days in
February, Groundhog Day,
Valentine’s Day, Family Day and the
WI's birthday. She gave two readings,
Thoughts For A Beautiful Day and
The Box of Treasured Memories. The
door prizes were won by Muriel
Coultes and Nancy Jardin.
The speaker was Jane Thompson
from Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority, who showed aerial photos
of floods in different areas caused by
heavy rain and fast snow melts.
She spoke of the Murray Scott
demonstration farm where tours are
hosted to show the grass waterways,
wetland areas, tree planting, and a
natural channel to slow down water
flow.
The education program at the
Wawanosh Nature Centre hosts over
5,000 students from JK to college age
each year and features various open
house days such as the Fall Colour
tour and Snow Fest. In the spring
they also put on a river safety
program in the local schools.
After answering questions she was
thanked for an informative
presentation.
Mrs. Jardin invited everyone to the
next potluck meal on Tuesday, March
17 and to wear green to celebrate St.
Patrick’s Day. The program will be
local musicians.
The business meeting opened with
the Mary Stewart Collect, the
secretary’s and treasurer’s reports
and correspondence given by
Dorothy Coultes.
Ideas were discussed for
preserving important artifacts after
the sale of the hall and for writing an
article for the Morris history book.

by Rev. Pat Cook on Sunday, Feb.
22.
Mikayla had the honour of
wearing a beautiful christening
gown made for her Grandma Marg
Bakker’s christening.
The UCW of Knox United will
meet at the church for lunch at 12:30
p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 26.

auction.
At Huron Chapel Evangelical
Missionary Church on Feb. 22,
Pastor Dave Wood’s message, Under
Construction, was shared. The
scripture reading was from 2
Peter.
The Olympians program on
Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 6:30 p.m. will
be an awards ceremony.
This will be a special event and all
parents are encouraged to come.
The annual meeting of Huron
Chapel will be held on Thursday,
Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m.
The El Salvador missions team
arrived safely Feb. 22.
The Auburn Women’s Institute
met Feb. 19 for an afternoon of
dessert and cards. Proceeds from the
card party were distributed to area
hospitals.
The Walkerburn Club members
met on Feb. 9 at the home of
Christena Gross.
As this is the club’s 90th year, it
was decided to have a picnic at
Manchester Riverside Park on June
14. All family members and former
members will be invited.
The next meeting will take place
on March 9 at the home of Ila
Cunningham. They will be quilting
a crib quilt.
