THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2009. The qualification playdowns have started for the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association provincial championship tournament. The first round consists of a three-game round-robin against Lucknow, Seaforth and Goderich. The Blyth Brussels PeeWees opened up with a 15-0 win against Lucknow in Blyth on Feb. 7. Next up was a trip to Seaforth on Tuesday, Feb. 10 against the perennial powerhouse Seaforth Stars. The game opened with both teams applying pressure for long stretches of time, but the first period ended scoreless. The Blyth/Brussels girls started to get a little more pressure and at the midway point of the second period. Kaitlyn Michie set up a two-on-one break that ended with Jordyn Sholdice sending a perfect pass to Lexi Smith, who fired the puck into the top of the net. From the face-off at centre ice Blyth/Brussels worked the puck back into Seaforth’s end and Smith picked up a loose puck and attempted to pass to the middle of the ice that deflected past the Seaforth goaltender for an unassisted goal 14 seconds after the opening goal. At the midway point of the third Delayna Smith netted an insurance marker with assists going to Sholdice and Lexi Smith. The rest of the game the team played very good overall team defence. The line of Ashley Higgins, Mackenzie Nesbitt and Taylor Higgins were able to consume valuable time by cycling the puck in the Seaforth zone and wearing down the Seaforth players. When the Seaforth players were able to get loose on a break the defence of Michie, Autumn Wightman, Mackenzie McGavin and Leanne Plunkett were there to thwart most attacks. The final line of defence, goaltender Lindsay Shiell, played a great game. She made many difficult saves on screened shots and was full value for the shutout victory. The final score was 3-0. The Blyth Brussels PeeWee girls played Goderich. Brussels was on fire and sent the Sailers home with a 4-2 loss. Higgins surprised the goalie by shooting from the blueline and scoring. Then Sholdice put a point on the board. Assisting was Wightman. The Smiths did some damage with a goal each. Shiell played like a pro in net. The Blyth Kings Bantam boys travelled to Barclay, just outside of Barrie to participate in the provincial broomball tournament this past weekend. The Eastern Shadows were the first team that the Kings were set to play against, on Friday evening. The Shadows took control of the ball and kept it in Blyth’s end for the first half of the period. Then Blyth decided to get into the game and showed some great ball control and made some nice plays. In the second period, Blyth received two penalties but was able to kill them. With just 50 seconds left on the clock, Blyth was caught on a bad shift change and with no defenders in place to stop the Shadows breakaway, the opponents scored a goal. Blyth’s next opponents were the Courtice Cobras on Saturday morning. Blyth dominated the first period of this game. Zach Berwick made a nice crossover pass towards the net. Alex Sanders saw the goalie come down to stop the ball, so went in and chipped the rebound over the goalie’s shoulder. Sanders scored another goal for the team with an assist from defender, Scott Jefferson. Blyth received two penalties, but didn’t allow their opponents to score a goal. Keeper, Bryce Glousher did a great job covering the net and earned a shutout for the Kings. The entire team worked together to pull off a 2- 0 win. On Saturday afternoon the Kings met the Stealth to play another exciting game of broomball. In the first period Blyth spent some time in the penalty box and at one point received three penalties at the same time. The rest of the players worked hard to successfully kill the penalties. In the second period with just under four minutes left in the game, the Stealth scored a goal. This loss ended the tournament for Blyth. The Bantams had a big team this year. The players attending the tournament were: Wyatt Bearss, Zach Berwick, Greg Boyle, Hunter Broda, Will Curran, Murray Dale, Derek deBoer, Zach Drost, Bryce Glousher, Brody Grummett-Nairn, Jeff Hallahan, Scott Jefferson, Gerrit Logtenberg, Tyler O’Rourke, Jordon Reinink, Alex Sanders, Ryan Stute and Kalvin VanMassenhoven. Close one The Blyth PeeWee Rep squad lost a close game last week to Norwich in the first game of their OMHA quarter final playoff by a score of 2-1. The teams came out early, both scoring quickly. Late in the third period Norwich broke the 1-1 tie and eventually rode that goal to victory. Norwich squeaked out another victory by a score of 3-2 on Thursday night before the teams met again on Sunday night in Blyth and Norwich swept the series winning 2-1. (Shawn Loughlin photo) The Brussels Novices travelled to Mount Forest. Goalie Jarron Thompson saw a lot of action and just couldn’t stop the opponents. Brussels next played Zurich and won 4-1. Noah Terpstra and Avery McArter scored and Jack Pipe scored two.
