The Citizen, 2009-02-19, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2009. We’re back. It seems all was well when we vacated the county for a little time in the south. Nothing really earth shaking happened while we were away, just the routine of winter. One of my four brothers, Clif shares my birthday. He was my present for my fifth celebration. It seems that I had requested a doll and was quite vocal about a baby brothernot being a suitable substitute. My recall of the day was thatDorothy Thorton, a neighbour, baked me a cake while we waited forDad’s return. Ruby Sanderson brought one withher when she came to be mom’ssubstitute and Dad stopped at thebake shop on his way home to make his little girl happy. The start of loving cake. So Clif thought that as we were getting to big numbers now, we should celebrate life. Nassau on New Providence in the Commonwealth of the Bahamas was the destination. Leaving -20° weather was not too hard to do and the welcome of the sun and sand was very nice. Clif and Anne live in Edmonton, so they were also ready for some short sleeves. The Catering Group are at theirgood deeds again. A Valentine’sdance was held Feb. 14 in support ofthe Community Centre and the needto upgrade the washrooms. Welldone ladies. Lots of good music andfun for a good cause.Next week we’re privileged tohave the opportunity to watch sledge hockey at the arena, thanks to Doug McArter and his team. Don’t miss it.The weather remains a hot topicespecially if you were one of thefolks who had water in all the wrongplaces. February just doesn’t seemthe time to be slopping around inbasement water. Oh well.Have a good week – a good timeto read or clean out another drawer.Items of interest may be found. Bye now, Betty G.W. By Makayla Tyerman The third meeting of the Grey 4-H Snickerdoodles was held at the home of Barb Terpstra on Valentine’s Day. The leaders said members would be making chocolate chip cookie recipes and were using different types of pans – an air bake cookie sheet, a cookie sheet with parchment paper and a baking stone. The leaders said they would be making only half a recipe for each of the three groups, so they had to divide all the ingredients by half. Members substituted chocolate chips with pink and red smarties, because it was Valentine’s Day. While the cookies were baking the members did an experiment about the gluten in flour. There were four different kinds of flour and members had to add as much water as they thought was needed, then mix up the water and flour, knead it for 10 minutes and put it in the oven for 10 minutes. The different kinds of flour were: all-purpose flour, cake and pastry flour, bread flour and multi- grain bread flour. The bread flour and the multi- grain rose the most. By Jo-Ann McDonald The Huron County Dairy Producers held their annual meeting at the Brussels Legion Branch on Wednesday, Feb. 11. They began their meeting at 11 a.m., then enjoyed a delicious roast beef dinner at noon and then moved into the second part of their meeting. Branch members helping out for the day were Deb Cann, Jo-Ann McDonald, Judy Lee, Nanci Ducharme, Brenda Linton, Cecil Moore and Elaine Nichol. The Cadet Corps has started a new fundraising effort. They are selling chocolate bars to raise funds for some of their activities. The new parent support group has began their duties and this is their first event of raising funds for the Corps. So if you can, support the Cadets by buying a chocolate bar. The Thursday night darts had 10 players taking aim at the boards. The first-place team was Roger McHardy and Sandra Josling. The second-place team was Gord Jacklin and Sharon Robbins. High shot of the night was by Gord shooting a 112. The Friday night supper of sweet and sour meatballs was enjoyed by a smaller crowd of just around 30 people. Next week the supper will be pork chops. Saturday evening was a great time with nearly 50 folks coming out to enjoy the night of wings, fries and Valentine’s draws. The draws made quite a few people happy and the wings were delicious. Kitchen staff included Deb Cann, Rick McDonald, Jo-Ann McDonald and Deb Ross. The event was in support of the Support the Troops initiative of the Royal Canadian Legion. The Optimists held a Daytona 500 party at the Branch. Showing the race on a big screen, along with snacks, cards and socializing, they had good time. They had a good bunch arrive to watch the rain- shortened race and enjoy the show. 4-H Snickerdoodles make sweet treats At the Branch Dairy producers meet at Legion Brussels Optimist Club Annual Dinner & Auction On Saturday, March 21 The Brussels Optimists will be holding their Annual Dinner & Auction at the B.M. & G. You will never need to show your bill to a representative at your door who claims to be from Festival Hydro as we have your information available to us in the office. Many independently owned companies have acquired a licence from the Ontario Energy Board to sell electricity in the province. They quite often will sell their services door to door. These companies are owned and operated separately from Festival Hydro. If an agent knocks on your door and wants to discuss a contract to provide your electricity, ask for identification and write the information down. Carefully read the terms of the contract to determine your rights and obligations under the agreement. If a consumer feels they have been dealt with unfairly, they can contact the Ontario Energy Board. Their toll free number is 1-877-632-2727. Complaints can also be submitted by email to complaints@oeb.gov.on.ca For further information please contact Festival Hydro at 519-271-4703 or toll free 1-866-444-9370 and press 2 for customer service.
