The Brussels Novices knew they
were up against a tough team when
they played Milverton recently.
They never gave up, though
Milverton gave goalie Jarron
Thompson a workout. He only let in
six.
The offence made sure
Milverton’s goalie didn’t go home
with a shutout. Cameron Gibson
blasted one into the net with help
from Avery McArter.
The Novices then played Seaforth
and this time they lost by 2-1. The
Brussels goal was scored by Noah
Terpstra.
The Blyth Brussels PeeWee girls
started provincial playdowns.
In the first game against Lucknow,
the girls showed no mercy and came
out with a win. Jordyn Sholdice,
Lexi Smith, MacKenzie Nesbit,
Taylor Higgins, Ashley Higgins and
Delayna Smith all bulged the twine.
Lindsey Shiell went home with a
shutout.
The Blyth PeeWee Local League
Dogs battled Zurich at home on Feb.
2.
Both teams played a tight game,
with lots of chances and no scoring
in the first.
Blyth got things rolling when Josh
VanSoest scored at the five-minute
mark of the second with helpers
from Curtis Raynard and Trystan
Weber.
Kyle Pollard fired a rocket from
the blueline to score.
Zurich answered back with one,
then Blyth took over from there.
Weber scored with help from
Dalton Richmond, then Richmond
scored one of his own, unassisted.
The Bulldogs scored four more in
the third. Bulging the twine were
Pollard, VanSoest with two, and
Ryan Plunkett. Assists went to
Dallas Coultes, Raynard and
VanSoest.
The Bulldogs played hard all night
and it was a good team win with the
whole team playing really well and
contributing in the win. Goalie,
Dustin Treble made several great
stops in the third.
The final score was 8-1.

With a 2010 deadline for
compliance with the standards set
for the Accessibility for Ontarians
with Disabilities Act, Huron East
has applied for a Trillium grant for
the Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre.
The building requires renovations
to the washrooms and to the doors to
address the issue of accessibility.
The estimated cost is between
$60,000 and $70,000 with the grant
request for one-third of the cost.
While the legislation has spurred
on the project, arena employee Abi
Corbett said that the work has been
discussed for some time. “The
washrooms have outlived
themselves. We have a problem even
getting parts to fix them.”
The washrooms on the auditorium
side do not even have an accessible
washroom. “If we have ice in
anyone in a wheelchair has to come
through the kitchen to use the
washroom on the arena side,” said
Corbett.
Manager Murray McArter said the
men’s washroom is going to require
some alteration because currently
there isn’t room for an accessible
stall. “We’re going to have to move
things because we can’t take
anything away or it lowers capacity.”
There is an extra stall in the
women’s washroom so this will be
removed without any effect on
capacity.
The renovation will also includenew flooring and paint. Some sinks
will have to be lowered as well.
The six entrance doors will also be
upgraded to appropriate standards.
Chief building official for Huron
East Paul Josling has been advising
the municipality on the
requirements. They have also
received input from Doug McArter,
who works as a draftsmen for Royal
Homes and is in a wheelchair.
Should grant approval be given,
the work will hopefully begin this
fall after the busy summer season.
While news about the grant won’t be
received until August, Corbett said
the work will have to proceed
somehow. “We have to be compliant
by 2010.”
The fines for non-compliance after
Jan. 1 are up to $50,000 a day for
each day for individuals or $100,000
per day for corporations.
Partnerships are key to obtaining a
Trillium grant and the Lions,
Optimists and catering group have
been asked to help with the project.
The catering group has already
committed funding to the project,
said Murray McArter.
Their first fundraiser is a
Valentine’s Dance Feb. 12 at the
arena. Tickets are $10 and music is
by the Wilbee Orchestra.
Funds are also being raised at the
minor hockey event Feb. 21 with
Zamboni rides. Tickets can be
purchased and three lucky winners
will get a chance to cruise the rink
that night.
Tight competition
It was time on the ice for Brussels Minor Hockey’s younger players with the local Tykes taking
on their Minto counterparts Saturday afternoon. The visitors came away with a 5-3 victory on
this day. (Vicky Bremner photo)
The Bantam Kings travelled to
Mildmay on a beautiful sunny day to
play their last regular broomball
game of the season on Feb. 8.
Mildmay was able to get on the
scoreboard twice in the first period,
after Blyth’s defence left the
Mildmay wingers uncovered.
Mildmay was able to score near the
top of the second period, but then
Blyth figured how to shut down their
opponents and not let them score.
Several penalties were handed out
to both teams during the remainder
of the game, but neither team took
advantage of the powerplay to score.
Blyth’s Bryce Glousher helped his
team out with some nice saves well
covering the net.
Three minutes of straight time
overtime was played to finish off the
hour and Blyth could take advantage
of their opponent’s goalie not
blocking their shots.
Derek deBoer passed the ball up to
Hunter Broda for a nice shot on net
for the only goal to be scored in
overtime.
The final score was a 3-1 loss for
the Blyth Kings.

hattrick, Brock McLean got a couple
and Lexi Smith put a point on the
