HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2009-02-12, Page 2On Friday, Jan. 30, 40 members of
the Brussels Agricultural Society
gathered at the BMG Centre for the
society’s 2009 annual meeting.
After the traditional potluck
supper the meeting was brought to
order by the president, David
Blaney, who expressed regrets from
Morris-Turnberry mayor, Dorothy
Kelly who was unable to attend.
Huron East deputy-mayor Bernie
MacLellan brought greetings from
the municipality as mayor Joe Seili
was on vacation.
The next item of business was the
presentation of awards to students
from the local area.
Bev Palmer presented the Jeanne
Ireland Award for the student
receiving the highest number of
points in the school section of the
Fall Fair to Tiffany Ditner.
Megan Dolmage received the
David and Joan Perrie Award for the
highest point total in the junior
section of the Fair from the Perries.
Dolmage also won the Murray
Cardiff Award for the highest
combined total in the two sections,
which was presented by Jeff
Cardiff.
Farm and field president, David
Blaney and homecraft president
Dona Knight used their annual
reports to the membership to thank
all the volunteers who take time
each year to make the fall fair a
success.
During the information and
correspondence section of the
meeting it was announced that the
annual meeting of the agricultural
societies in District 8 would be
hosted by the Brussels society in
October of this year. After a short
discussion it was decided to
contribute an item to the auction
held each year at the Ontario
Convention to help defray expenses.
Ambassador Kari Bell will deliver it
when she attends the convention in
February.
The report of the nominating
committee and a full slate of officers
were presented. Dorothy Cummings
was nominated as farm and field
president with Jeff Cardiff as first
vice-president.
Dona Knight will be in the second
year of her term as homecraft
president with Edna McClellan
as first vice-president and Cath-
rine Campbell as second vice-
president.
As he relinquished the gavel to the
Cummings, Blaney commented,
“I’ve had a lot of support in this job
and a lot of fun as well.”
The meeting wound up with a
discussion of the fair theme for
2010. After a lively debate the
meeting settled on, Bee Keen, Go
Green as the watchwords for
2010.

Brussels Legion newsletters are
out and hopefully all Comrades have
received them. Contact the Branch if
you haven’t. It includes a very
important message about the
February general meeting to the
Comrades of the Branch.
The accessibility committee has
completed meetings with John
Rutledge and the feasibility study on
making the Branch barrier free. Any
possible major construction on the
building requires that the
membership be notified and attend a
general meeting to be advised of all
the facts of any changes and
expenditures.
The executive must also have a
majority vote of its members before
it could proceed.
Comrade John will be in
attendance at the meeting to present
the ideas and answer questions
members may have. If approval of
the Branch membership is received
by the executive, the next steps in a
long process can begin.
The Thursday night darts had 13
taking aim at the boards. The first-
place team was Gord Jacklin and
Dan Beyersbergen. In second were
Marlene Little and Roger McHardy.
The high shot was by Glen Zehr
shooting a 135.
The first skunk of the season went
to Harry Smith, Greta Zehr and
Catrina Josling.
The Friday night supper of roast
beef was well attended. This week is
sweet and sour meatballs.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
saw only seven tables at play. The
high players were Joann MacDonald
and Dorothy Carter with 75 points.
The second-place team of Vera
Lindner and Reta Davidson earned
67 points and the third-place team
was Glen and Greta Zehr with 63
points.
The unlucky cards of the day were
in the hands of Bush Whittard and
Olave Little who had only 43 points,
earning them the low prize. Lone-
hand prizes went to Delores Howatt
and Lloyd Appleby.
The Sunday night dance had a
great crowd out to enjoy the music
of the Georgian Bay Islanders.

Candy for sale
Candygrams were on sale last week at Brussels Public School, with the distribution taking
place throughout this week for Valentine’s Day. Sales went towards the cost of the candy as
well as to the student council who will be contributing to the school’s upcoming Winter FunFest
later this month. From left: Kody Higgins and Tori Kellington who were selling and Annie Prout
