I suppose it is official that winter is
going to be here for six more weeks.
Groundhogs Wiarton Willie, Phil
and Sam all were on the same page
or should I say the same snowbank
and saw their shadows. We can
always hope that they are wrong, but
the middle of March is just around
the corner and hopefully it will be
spring anyway.
If you are readers of the Farmer’s
Almanac, it also forecasts lots more
snow for the month of February. We
should all have very toned upper
body muscles with all the shovelling.
People employed in the snow
removal business are also
complaining that they have seen
enough snow for this year.
We have to give credit where
credit is due. The roads departments
have been doing a great job at
clearing the snow, but it’s sometimes
difficult with vehicles parked on the
side of the roads.
Congratulations to Jacob McGavin
who has been chosen as one of 12
Junior Citizens of the Year in
Ontario. Jacob will be presented
with his award at Queen’s Park in
Toronto in March.
Returning from a trip to Florida
were Paulene Gulutzen and her sister
Shirley Hertlein. They drove with a
friend and spent a week enjoying the
area. It was not really warm but
comfortable. They did a lot of
walking and meeting new folks in
the park.
They flew home to our wonderful
winter deep freeze.
Heading to Cuba and the Playa
Costa Verde resort were Eric and
Deb Ross, Bill and Carol Stevenson,
Bob and Laura Bridge, Mike and
Karen Thomas and her sister Kathy
and Darby. It was warm, but they did
have a couple of days of rain. They
spent time horseback riding on one
of the misty rainy days in the
mountains.
They enjoyed catamarans,
snorkelling, paddle boats and spent
lots of time bicycling in the area.
Some of them took the train into the
flea market which it was quite
interesting.
Great nightly entertainment was
enjoyed.
Chad and Kristen Fisher have
returned from a cruise around
Mexico and report having a great
time.
Klaus and Shelley Jorritsma have
returned from a fantastic trip to
Costa Rico. They had a five-hour
flight, then a short 20-minute flight
to the small island where their resort
was. They met a couple from Regina
while away and had some enjoyable
times together. They went four-
wheeling around the island and
really enjoyed their week.
The Brussels Curling Club had an
enjoyable jitney at the Seaforth
Curling Club on Saturday. There
were 23 curlers having a good day.
Steve and Marni Knight organized
the event. The teams curled for the
first couple of ends, then rotated
through the team members so
everyone had the opportunity to
skip. The winning team was Murray
Hoover, Jeff Cardiff, Mary Bernard
and Madeline Steiss. The lucky
turkey shoot was won by Reg
Vinnicombe.
The teams played two six-end
games and enjoyed a soup and beef
on a bun lunch.
The Walton Hall was the place for
a surprise birthday party for Clint
Emmrich’s 60th. There was around
30 family members and friends
gathered to have a great time. There
were games of lost heir, spoons and
stories to tell, for an enjoyable
evening.
Our condolences are expressed to
the Zwep family on the passing of
Aafke Zwep. The Zwep family,
Jacob and Aafke with their children
Atje, Harry, Annette, George and
Jerry lived on the 16th of Grey for
many years. Jacob Zwep passed
away in 1979 and in 1993 Aafke
moved into the newly-built Huronlea
where her home has been for the last
16 years.
I remember first meeting Mrs.
Zwep at Humphries General Store in
Walton. It was after I first came to
Walton and she welcomed me to the
corner of the 16th of Grey.
Huronlea welcomes Malinda
Johnston back in their midst this past
week. She returns there, after
spending time in hospital, then in
Braemar in Wingham. She is in the
nursing care unit and many of her
friends from the apartments will be
able to drop in for a visit.
Congratulations to Justine King on
the birth of a baby boy,Ayden. First-
time grandparents, Bill and Tammy
King are thrilled.
Returning from a trip to Cozumel,
Mexico are Gary and Rachel
Sutcliffe and Trevor Sutcliffe and
Karen deVries. They had a great trip
with nice and warm weather. They
went four-wheeling, snorkelling and
rented jeeps to go touring around the
island.
The Brussels Curling Club has
completed the three weeks of curling
with the Grade 7/8 students from
Brussels Public School. Helping on
the last week were Jo-Ann
McDonald, Mary Bernard, Marianne
Bernard and Steve Steiss. Helpers on
the other two weeks were Jeff
Cardiff and Karen Uhler.
Home for a visit and to do some
work is Brian Marks. He is helping
to get the house ready for mom
Maxine’s return from Parkwood.
The Cranbrook darts are having a
good turnout of folks just looking to
have a little fun.
On Jan. 21 the high scores of the
night were by Sarah Joslin with a 99
and by Frank Workman with a
128.
On Jan. 28 the husband and wife
team of Brad and Gayle Speiran
were hard to beat with high scores of
86 and 114 respectively.

any Wednesday night or call John at
