HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2009-02-05, Page 12In accordance with a requirement
from the provincial Education
ministry, the two school boards in
Huron and Perth Counties will send
home a voluntary survey for students
wishing to identify themselves as
First Nation, Métis or Inuit.
Referred to as a Voluntary
Aboriginal Self-Identification
Survey, the questionnaire is included
as part of a short pamphlet
explaining why someone might wish
to affirm their identity to school
board officials.
According to the pamphlet, the
boards “are asking parents/guardians
to self-identify their Aboriginal
children so that, together, we can
improve educational outcomes.” The
boards will use the information to
“share Aboriginal culture, values
and traditions” as well as “promote
Aboriginal leadership and success.”
Dan Parr, education
superintendent for the Huron-Perth
Catholic District School Board, told
trustees at a Jan. 26 meeting that the
provincial Education ministry asked
boards to conduct such surveys after
deciding that the information about
Aboriginal identity available from
Statistics Canada was not a reliable
reflection of the true heritage of
many students.
“The Ministry of Education has
said instead that (students) will be
recognized as Aboriginal if they
choose to be recognized as
Aboriginal,” Parr explained.
PAGE 12. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2009.Faith on the Farm was the themeof the service at LondesboroughUnited Church on Sunday, Feb. 1.Rev. Pat Cook is currently onholidays and Lisa Boonstoppel-Potconducted the service. It was a
subject familiar to Lisa who, along
with her husband and children,
operates a Jersey farm.
Flowers on the memorial stand
were placed there in memory ofGordon Bosman by his family. Mr.Bosman passed away early lastweek.Following the morning service, the Sunday school held its annual
soup and sandwich luncheon. The
teachers are very appreciative for the
great support they received. It was a
great time of fellowship and

practise on Feb. 8 at 10 a.m. Ian
O’Neill will be in charge of the

NEWS
FROM LONDESBORO
Neighbours in the eastern area of
the village are welcoming
Londesborough’s new residents.
Gerald and Agnes Daoust have
moved into the former home of
Mary Lou Crosby. The couple
moved from Teeswater where they
were live-in managers of an
apartment building.
Welcome, Gerald and Agnes. We
hope you will find life in
Londesborough to your liking.
Mary Lou has moved to Stratford
so she can be of assistance to her
brother and her father. Her boys,
Jacob and Jamie had already left the
nest as children do.
After 93 years coping on her own,
Edythe Beacom has decided to try
living with some care. She is now on
the retirement floor at the Seaforth
Manor. Edythe’s presence in the
village and at card parties in the area
will be missed. You might just drop
in to see her if you are over that way.
Appropriately, the Heart and
Stroke Society chooses February to
heighten everyone’s awareness of
these diseases. Welcome the
volunteers when they knock on your
door.
I came across a little poem by
Cleo King worth sharing for
Valentine’s Day:
“Our valentines may be a smile, a
cheerful word or two, a helping
hand, a tender glance that signals,
“I Love You.”
And if we take the time to give
these friendly signs, the world will
soon be brightened by our daily
valentines.”
I suggest you try these friendly
signs with those dearest to you as
well as all others with whom you
year.
