The Stage 1 skaters did their routine to Spiderman. (Vicky Bremner photo) Blyth Novice Reps hosted Zurich and travelled to Monkton. They played Zurich on Saturday. Leading the scoring was Parker Gibbings, with five goals and an assist. Also, scoring for Blyth were Andrew VanWyk, Ethan Coultes, and Tanner Boven. Assists went to Damon Allen with three and Carson Richmond. Strong goaltending by Jacob Gulutzen earned the win, which ended with a final score of 8-1. Blyth then headed to Monkton to play Elma Logan. The Dogs took the lead in the first with a goal by Jared Shearer. Assists were from VanWyk and Mitch McNicol. Elma Logan tied it and scored a couple more, before Blyth scored again in the third. The goal was by Richmond with assists from VanWyk and Michaela Rodger. The Brussels Atom Local League posted two wins and a loss this weekend. Friday night they faced Listowel on home ice and won 4-2. The defence of Bennett Newell, Derrick Waechter, Dean Scarrow and Dylan McNeil held the Listowel squad until midway through the third period. Scoring for Brussels were Christopher Van Veen from Dylan McNeil, Cody Harding from Daniel Fritz and Nathan Armstrong; Kiaran Jared from Harding, and Van Veen again from Harding and Jamie Perrault. Saturday they travelled to Milverton. There was no scoring until the second period. Brussels got three goals, netted by Dalen Martin from VanVeen; Harding, unassisted; and VanVeen from McNeil. Despite their best efforts, though, Brussels lost. Sunday’s game was in Zurich. Brussels stomped all over the opponents, winning 9-1. Harding scored his first hattrick. Newell netted his first goal of the season. Also scoring were Armstrong, Kailey Wheeler, Jared and VanVeen with two. Assisting them were VanVeen, Martin, Wheeler, Perrault, McNeil, Scarrow and Seth Nichol. Konrad McArter was great in net for all three games. This weekend, the team plays three games again. The Blyth Midget Reps won game one of the best-of-five series against Ripley by 4-3 in overtime on Monday, Jan. 19. Blyth opened the scoring with a goal from Matt Stevenson, assisted by Dan Dery and Michael McDowell. Halfway through the second period Ripley answered to tie it heading into the third. With Blyth in the box to start the third, Ripley scored two goals less than 45 seconds apart, to take a 3-1 lead. After a timeout Blyth tied it, with less than seven minutes to go with goals from Dallas Pennington and Dery. Picking up assists were Austin Sjaarda, Tyler Black and Adam Cronin. The last five minutes saw end-to- end action with goalies making huge saves at both ends of the rink. Neither team was able to score in regulation time, sending this game into a 10-minute sudden-death overtime. With just under two minutes into the extra frame, on a powerplay, Matt Popp scored the winner with a blast from the point. Earning assists on the goal were Dery and Cronin. Midgets play Drayton in series Ona Mezenberg, Owen Sound, provided the lone goal in the Saugeen Maitland Midget Lightning’s Sunday night game against the Waterloo Ravens. She was assisted by Tammy Freiburger, Wingham and Victoria Bertrand, Port Elgin. Sarah McGall, Owen Sound played excellent in net chalking up another well-earned shutout. This was the last game of the regular season in the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League, leaving the Lightning in first place with 33 points and their season record of 15 wins, four losses and three ties. The team also boasted the most goals, 58 and the last goals against, 30, in their division of 11 teams. They will be scheduling their first round of LLFHL division playoff games against the St. Thomas Panthers following this weekend’s Silver Stick Tournament being played out of Sarnia. Also, within the next three weeks they will be trying to fit in provincial playdowns against the Stratford Aces. Medical attention The routine for the junior/intermediate skaters, Tori Cardiff, Emma and Sarah Strome and Kathryn Chalmers paid homage to ER and Grey’s Anatomy during the Brussels Skating Club’s TV Tunes on Sunday. (Vicky Bremner photo) The Blyth Midget Icedogs playedsome excellent broomball this pastweekend.The boys’ first game was Jan. 30in Blyth against Palmerston. Thevisitors were the first to get on thescoreboard after about eight minutesinto the game. Five minutes later, Brent Drost scored and Mike Rawlings earned an assist. During the same shift, Mark Dery sent the ball towards the net and it bounced off of a Palmerston player. Drost picked it up to score his second of the night. Palmerston scored with just over a minute left in the first period. Goalie Derek Logtenberg was the team’s lucky charm as he stopped the ball and made some awesome saves as Palmerston pounded shots at the net. The period ended tied 2-2. At the top of the second, Brendon Boven drove the ball towards Palmerston’s net and Rawlings scored to put his team ahead. Palmerston made some nice shots on net, but Logtenberg stood firm. With just under three minutes left in the game, Tyler Hallahan ran up the ice on a breakaway. Palmerston intercepted his pass, so Hallahancharged on and stole the ball awayfrom his opponents, then went pasttheir defence to score. Blyth wonthis game 4-2.This was a great victory for theteam as the last time these teamsmet, Blyth lost in overtime. On the next night, Jan. 31, the Icedogs travelled to Mildmay. Rawlings set up the first goal for Drost to shoot the ball into the net and put Blyth on the scoreboard. Two minutes later Mildmay scored. With less than a minute left in the first period Mildmay took a nice clean back-hand shot and fired the ball into Blyth’s net from the blueline. With just over five minutes left in the game, Blyth put out a power line and later pulled their goalie. Blyth stayed in control of the play, making some nice shots on net and even connecting with the crossbar. However, the Mildmay goalie wouldn’t let the ball get by him. As the final buzzer sounded it was a 2-1 loss for the Icedogs. Coach Billy Greidanus was pleased with his team’s effort and enthusiasm. Icedogs play Palmerston Blyth Atom Locals post 2 victory, 1 loss Lightning ends season on top The Brussels PeeWee Reps won the first round of playoffs against Tiverton. Tiverton started the scoring but Brussels tied the game when Jordyn Sholdice bulged the twine with Reece McArter assisting. Then Wyatt Ducharme scored with Hayden TenPas assisting. Brock McLean put in another with the assist gong to Anthony Vader. This gave Brussels a two-goal lead, but the game wasn’t in the bag as Tiverton scored three quick ones in the third. Down by one, Brussels didn’t give up and with only a second left Mitchell Kellington took the team into overtime with a goal. Kellington then set up Lexi Smith for the winning goal. Matt McNichol played a great series in net. PeeWee Reps win first round Little explorer The Stage 1 skaters were Dora and Diego during the Brussels Skating Club’s performance on Sunday afternoon.
