The first game was a nailbiter against Parkhill. Delayna Smith put in the first goal, but Parkhill tied it. Lexi Smith put in the winning goal with help from Taylor Higgins. The second game was against Aylmer. It was another hard game but the Ice Dogs came out on top with Higgins scoring the first goal. The assist went to Lexi Smith. The second goal was by Jordyn Sholdice assisted by Mackenzie Nesbitt. Aylmer tied it again but the Icedogs went ahead by three with goals from Lexi Smith, Kaitlyn Michie assisting; Delayna Smith and Ashley Higgins to win 5-2. This put the Icedogs into the finals against Parkhill. The girls had their work cut out for them. Lexi Smith scored early in the first and Parkhill scored two. Ashley Higgins tied it. The game went into five-minute overtime but this resulted in no change to the score. In the shootout Nesbitt scored the first goal. In the skill competition at the tournament Sholdice got second in skating, goalie Lindsay Shiell got second overall, Nesbitt, got recognition for her puck-handling skills and Lexi Smith won the top shooter prize. The Brussels Novice Reps played Howick in recent hockey action. Howick came out full force and took a three-goal lead. Then Noah Terpstra scored with Darren Evans assisting. Jack Pipe scored with Brett Stevenson assisting and Noah Terpstra added another, then completed a hattrick with help from Hudson Smith, Ronan Jarrod and Avery McArter. Brussels came out on top 5-4. The team next played Milverton. The game started out pretty even but Milverton took a strong lead. Cameron Gibson scored with an assist from Sarah Strome. Pipe scored with Nolan Johnson assisting. Jarren Thompson made many saves in both games. Novices win, lose The Blyth Atom Rep team is moving on after a six-game series with Ripley. The local boys had to win the last two games in overtime to clinch the series. The first game was in Ripley and the locals came up short losing 5-4 in overtime. Scoring were Dawson Coultes, Jake Coultes, Brenden Howson, and Colton Rodger. Assists went to Drew Bromley, Hunter Dale, Brandon Marshall, Colton Rodger and Owen Weber. For the second game the Reps were on fire winning the game 7-3. Leading the way was Justin Rodger with three goals, B. Marshall with two, Dale and Howson. Picking up the assists were Justin Rodger and Dale with a pair, Colton Rodger, Dawson Coultes and Howson. Game three was back in Ripley and the home team came out with a 6-5 win. B. Marshall had a pair of goals. Drew Bromley, Howson and Justin Rodger scored the remainder. Earning the helpers were Dawson Coultes with two, Jordan Hubbard, Craig Raynard, Colton Rodger, Jake Coultes and Bromley. With their backs against the wall, a win or a tie was needed in game four to keep the series going. After four periods of hockey the final was 4-4. B. Marshall had two goals. Bromley and Dale scored singles. Assists went to Bromley, Howson, and Colton Rodger. The team was on the road for game number five looking for another victory. The locals won 2-1 in overtime. Bromley and B. Marshall scored and assisted to secure the win. Bromley scored the overtime winner. The main event was set with game six in Blyth. The winner would move on to the WOAA finals against Drayton. The locals were victorious by a score of 3-2 in overtime. Howson had a pair of goals including the overtime winner. Bromley scored the first goal. B. Marshall and Colton Rodger assisted. Franklin Marshall played solid in goal helping his team clinch the series. Starters The Blyth arena was the site for a Sunday afternoon match- up against local Tyke teams. Blyth and Brussels competed but didn’t worry about the score as they set a great example and just had fun playing the game. (Vicky Bremner photo) The Blyth PeeWee Reps are WOAA champs! After a resounding 7-1 victory in the first series game against Drayton, the Blyth PeeWee Reps travelled to Drayton, Jan. 28 for game two. After a long car ride the boys started a little sluggish and Drayton got two past Blyth’s goalie, Dalton Carey in the first. The team started waking up in the second period and got two goals of their own. The VanWyk twins, Mike and Matt each got a goal with assists going to Wyatt Carey, Ryan Nesbitt and the twins. The boys came out to play their style of hockey for sure in the third as they scored five goals. Scoring were Mike VanWyk, Dustin Pennington and a hat-trick for Arden Coultes. Assisting were Carey and Spencer Stevenson with two each. The final score was 7-2 for Blyth. The Dogs travelled to Drayton for game three. The team played well from the drop of the puck until the final buzzer. Pennington got the Dogs on the scoreboard midway through the second on an assist from Braydon Whitfield. In the closing minutes of the first Mike VanWyk got the second goal assisted by Trystan Weber. Early into the second Mike VanWyk got his second goal assisted by Josh VanSoest. Drayton was determined not to be held off the scoreboard and slid one by Carey in the last few minutes of the second. But that was the one and only goal they would get. The Dogs played a more defensive style game not wanting Drayton to get too many odd man rushes and were able to force Drayton to pull their goalie with a minute and a half to go. With a quick pass up the boards from Wyatt Carey to Stevenson who buried the puck in the empty net with 8.4 seconds left on the clock the Dogs had taken all the wind out of Drayton’s sails.Down in front It was hockey action for the Novices on Friday night as the Brussels Reps faced off against Milverton. While this one came close it actually rolled away from the net, but it was a close one for the local goalie. The hosts didn’t fare well overall, however, losing 8-2. (Vicky Bremner photo) PeeWee Reps WOAA champs The Brussels Pre-Tykes played Blyth on Sunday away. With Brussels having a little more experience in a game situation the squad had many goal-scoring chances. Contributors were Carson Heise, Anden Piper, Albert Cardiff, Simon Johnston, Max Johnston, Bennett Smith, Clare Mitchell, Christopher Pennington, Colby Nicholson and Joel Nesbitt. Blyth Atom Reps move on Girls play in tourney final The Blyth PeeWee Local League Bulldogs had a busy weekend. The Bulldogs headed to Goderich on Saturday where they took home a 6-1 win. Leading the team was Damien Brak with two goals and an assist. Other goalscorers were Trystan Weber with two, Kyle Pollard and Josh Van Soest. Assists went to Brendan Hallahan with three, Curtis Raynard and Weber with two each. Blyth then travelled to Teeswater on Sunday and came away with a 2- 2 tie. Weber scored both goals. Assists were by Raynard, Pollard, and Van Soest. Strong goaltending by Dustin Treble kept Blyth in the game. Busy weekend for Blyth PeeWee Locals Local Pre-Tykes play for fun
