HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2009-01-22, Page 15THE CITIZEN. THURSDAY, JANUARY 22, 2009. PAGE 15.Listen, God Is Calling, was themessage delivered by Rev. Pat Cookat Londesborough United Church onSunday, Jan. 18. The gospel passage,1 Samuel 3: 1-10, read by HelenDale, is the story of God calling
Samuel.
During their time at the front, the
children helped Rev. Pat with the
story of Samuel.
Samuel, who worked in the
temple, thought the high priest, Eli
was calling him. However
eventually Eli realized that God was
calling Samuel. The next time
Samuel heard the voice, he
answered, “Your servant is
listening.”
Rev. Pat reminded the children
that God calls everyone to do special
work for Him; but people must listen
for His call.As adults realize, work is an ever-changing process, a shifting throughtime of responsibilities andexperiences. So it was for Eli. Hehad been chosen by the Israelites to
the lifetime post of high priest in the
temple. He is comfortable with his
position and the people, too, have
grown accustomed to him.
Samuel has been given to Eli to be
trained by him and to help him. But
Samuel is still just a boy and
represents a new generation, new
ideas, new energy. Then God calls
Him to do His work; the course of
Samuel’s life has been changed. God
calls each of us to fulfill His plan for
us and the world. He has a dream for
all of us and for the church
community.
Rev. Cook suggested a churchmust always be working on newgoals for its faith community; settingpriorities to suit the changing natureof the world and the churchfollowers and finding creative ways
to maintain enthusiasm in faith and
church. People all need a church of
the living God. God’s voice may
change the course of life as well.
Will people answer as Samuel did?
she asked.
The responsive psalm, Psalm 139,
confirms the belief that God has
complete knowledge of each of
person and cares for them. The
senior choir sang the hymn,
Redeeming Love, as their morning
anthem.
Flowers on the memorial stand
were placed in memory of Ella
(Jewitt) Flood who passed away Jan.11. Condolences are extended toJohn and Barb Jewitt and othermembers of her family from thechurch and community.Sympathy of the community is
extended also to Bruce and Harriett
Shillinglaw. Bruce’s mother passed
away on Jan. 15.
A special meeting of the official
board of Londesborough United
Church will be held following the
morning service on Jan. 25.
Friday, Jan. 30 is movie night. The
move, Happy Feet will be shown at
7 p.m. This evening is open to
everyone in the community.
The Sunday school will hold its
annual soup and sandwich
fundraiser on Feb. 1 following the
morning service.

NEWS
FROM LONDESBORO
Have you got cabin fever yet?
This winter weather doesn’t want to
loosen its grip on our area. What
would a day without snow be like? I
can’t remember the last one.
Sometimes it’s best to just stay away
from the windows, stop being a
weather watcher and stay busy.
The weather played havoc with
news items to report this week as
well. The Happy Gang Seniors
cancelled their card party on Friday
night because of poor travelling
conditions. Their next euchre
evening should be Friday, Feb. 13.
And the ARC meeting that was to
be held last Thursday evening was
also cancelled. That meeting has
been rescheduled for Thursday, Jan.
22 at Wingham Public School. That
way the fourth and final meeting can
still be held on Feb. 12 as originally
planned.
Perhaps Mr. Coups at Hullett
Central Public School has the right
idea. His Grade 7/8 class are
organizing a winter play day for the
students for Thursday, Jan. 22. The
snow date will be Jan. 27. Now
perhaps it would brighten your
winter if you stopped by that day,
watched the activities and listened to
the children’s laughter.
A nasty accident was caused by
white-out conditions on Tuesday
afternoon south of Londesborough
on Hwy. 4 at Summerhill Road. Five
cars were initially involved but no
serious injuries resulted.
Late Saturday afternoon a young
lady travelling west encountered
heavy snow on the bridge east of the
village. Apparently she lost control
of her car and it ended up on its side
at the end of Hugh and Betty
Millar’s laneway. Along the way it
snapped off the hydro pole.
Because the pole had to be
replaced Hugh and Betty and Matt
an Dawn were without hydro on a
cold evening until after nine at night.
The young woman was not
injured in the incident.
