responsively. The prayer of

The congregation joined in
singing the hymn, Come in, Come in
and Sit Down followed by the words
of assurance read responsively.
The senior choir voices sang, I

The children came to the front of
the church. Mr. Whitmore asked

Just As I Am.
Mr. Whitmore’s message was
entitled, Who Me? He reflected on
different people such as Winston

had humble beginnings, but all had
received calls from God that
changed their lives. All too were late

Mr. Whitmore held up a paper
with the word TEAM on it
meaning Together Everybody
Achieves More. He thanked the
congregation for all the love and
support shown to him and Melissa
while they were leading the services.

PEOPLE AROUND
BELGRAVE
The year 2009 marks the 250th
anniversary of the birth of Robert
Burns and on Jan. 24, Melville
Presbyterian Church, Brussels will
take part in a 200-year-old tradition
when it hosts the Burns Supper. Held
wherever Scots and ‘wanabys’are in
the world, the suppers are a nation’s
tribute to its poet laureate, ‘Rabbie’
Burns.
Begun soon after his death in
1796, each dinner begins with
Burns’ Address to a Haggis, that
particularly Scottish dish that is the
centrepiece of the evening’s meal.
When the Haggis has completed its
ceremonial entrance to the sound of
the pipes and been properly
eulogized the meal itself is served.
Surrounding the “great chieftain
of the puddin’-race!” will be a
traditional bill of fare featuring
smoked salmon, cock-a-leekie soup
and roast beef, tatties, bashed neeps,
scones and trifle.
Dinner starts at 6 p.m. at the
Brussels Legion, followed at 9 p.m.
by a traditional Ceilidh. The Ceilidh
will feature Scottish country dancing
and the traditional music of the pipes
from the pipes and drums of the
Brussels Legion Band.
Tickets are $20 for the supper and
dance, and tickets for the dance only
are $10 at the door. Space is limited.
