The Blyth Bantam boys
participated in a broomball
tournament this past weekend in
Mildmay. There were four teams in
the round-robin tournament from
Blyth, Innisfil, Mildmay and
Seaforth.
Blyth had the first game against
Innisfil on Saturday morning, Jan.
17. The teams were evenly-matched
and the ball went up and down the
ice, but after regulation game time
neither team had scored.
Blyth’s goalie, Bryce Glousher did
a great job defending his net and
earning a shutout. In overtime
Hunter Broda took control of the
ball at the centre of the ice and
passed it around his opponents to his
teammate.
Derek deBoer was open for the
pass and took the ball up to the net
and scored the winning goal.
Blyth met Mildmay on Saturday
afternoon. Glousher and the defense
players did a great job keeping the
ball away from Blyth’s net. This was
another closely-matched game, with
lots of action and scoring
opportunities. Penalties were handed
out to each team, but neither team
was able to take advantage of their
powerplay.
After scoreless regulation play, it
was another overtime period to see if
a winner could be declared.
Unfortunately Blyth was caught
with their net unguarded and
Mildmay slipped the ball to win the
game.
Saturday night, Blyth played the
Seaforth Bantams. Blyth came out
strong in this game and at the top of
the first period, Zach Drost passed
the ball across the ice to deBoer,
who took control of the ball and
broke away from the players to
score.
However, within a few minutes
Seaforth came back to tie it.
There was lots of action as the ball
moved back and forth over the ice,
but it wasn’t until halfway through
the second period that Blyth was
able to break the tie. Gerrit
Logtenberg made a nice pass
through a Seaforth player’s legs and
Jeff Hallahan picked up the pass and
scored, for a 2-1 victory.
After all the points had been
tallied Blyth was in second place
and earned a spot in the
championship game against
Mildmay, to be held on Sunday
afternoon.
Mildmay came to play and scored
two goals in the first period.
This score held so Mildmay won a
trophy and banner and Blyth
received participation medals for
second place.
The Bantam boys have a large
team with 19 players. Coaches Gord
Stute and Gerrit Reinink were
pleased with their team’s effort.
Both Blyth PeeWee broomball
teams played in the Mildmay
broomball tournament this past
weekend.
The Blyth Rollers started off in a
round robin with two other teams.
Their first game against the
Mildmay Green went into overtime
to decide. The Rollers scored to win
1 -0.
In their second game the Rollers
easily handled the Seaforth team
beating them 3-0.
The Rollers came out of the round
robin in first place. They then faced
Palmerston.
It was another close game and the
Rollers won 1-0. This put the Rollers
in the championship game against
Innisfil.
Innisfil scored part way through
the game to take the lead. The
Innisfil goalie proved to be too much
for the Blyth shooters and their one
goal held for the win.
The Blyth Rollers came home
with the silver metal.
The Blyth Dynamite led off the
tournament against Mildmay Red.
Mildmay was the usual tough
opponent, and scored late in the first
period to take the lead. This one-
goal lead held for the victory.
The Dynamite’s second game was
against Palmerston. It was another
close match up that ended in
overtime. Palmerston scored in the
second overtime period to take the
victory.
This put the Dynamite in the
consolation round against Seaforth.
The two teams battled back and
forth but with neither team scoring
the game went into overtime.
Preston Scott, the Blyth goalie,
played well in net to keep the game
tied.
The Dynamite finally got a break
when Bailey Van Massenhoven dug
the ball out of the corner and passed
to Logan Forbes in the slot. Forbes
fired the winning goal into the
Seaforth net to give the Dynamite
the victory. The Blyth Novice Reps played in
the Aaran-Elderslie tournament.
The Bulldogs travelled to Paisley
and first played the Mildmay team.
Mildmay took the lead early in the
first with a goal, then followed up
with two more in the second before
the Dogs started their comeback.
Bailey Bos knocked home a
rebound from Damon Allen and
Parker Gibbings, then about a
minute later Gibbings fired home a
goal with assists going to Allen and
Bos. Finally with about a minute left
in the second, Allen scored to tie the
game helped out by Bos and Carson
Richmond.
The game continued into the third
with several chances by both teams,
all being denied by the goaltenders
ending the game in a 3-3 tie.
This game was decided by a
shootout. Blyth’s first two shooters
(Allen and Gibbings) were stopped
by the Mildmay goalie and the
Bulldog goalie Jacob Gulutzen
stoned the Mildmay shooters.
The third shooters took their spot.
Blyth’s Jared Shearer waited on the
goalie before making his move and
fired the puck into the net. Gulutzen
shut Mildmay down, so Blyth won
the shootout. MVP for the game
selected by the tournament
committee was Gulutzen.
Blyth waited until 3 p.m. to play
their next game against Owen
Sound. Blyth worked hard, but were
overmatched against a good Owen
Sound team.
Owen Sound started the scoring in
the first going up by two before
Jared Shearer scored Blyth’s first,
assisted by Drew VanWyk and
Gibbings.
Owen Sound added several more
before Blyth scored again. Gibbings
got the points assisted by VanWyk.
Blyth’s MVP of the game was
Shearer.

The Lightning girls had three
victories prior to that game, winning
2-0 over Markham-Stouffville, 2-0
over Sarnia, and 2-1 over Chatham.
Goalies Emily Kelly, Port Elgin, and
McGall earned a shutout each.

Midget teams from Blyth, Innisfil,
Mildmay, Palmerston, Seaforth, and
Windsor competed in the Mildmay
tournament, Jan. 16-18.
Blyth met Palmerston on the ice
for their first broomball match on
Friday night. This was a very
competitive game with scoring
opportunities from both teams. In
the last 13 seconds of the game,
Palmerston chipped the ball into the
net. The Blyth Midget boys played
an excellent game, but lost 1-0.
Blyth’s next opponents were their
local rivals from Seaforth in a game
shortly after 9 p.m. on Friday. The
first period saw two different
penalties against Blyth and
fortunately the team was able to pull
together and kill the penalties
without getting scored on. Andy
Bolinger stole the ball from Seaforth
and scored the first goal of the game
with just over two minutes left in the
first period.
Blyth came out strong in the
second period with several scoring
opportunities, pounding the ball
towards the net in the first minute
back on ice. Brendan Boven made a
nice pass up the ice to Bolinger for
another goal, giving Blyth a two-
goal lead. Greg Roetcisoender
earned an assist on Blyth’s next goal
after flipping the ball to his
teammate. Brent Drost picked up the
ball and ran towards the net on a
breakaway and scored the final goal
of the game.
Blyth’s defence did a great job
defending the zone, helping to
reduce the scoring opportunities for
their opponents. Boven, Lucas
Frawley, Jon Hakkers, Tyler
Hallahan, Shawn Reinink and Greg
Roetcisoender were on defence.
Goalkeeper Derek Logtenberg
gave an excellent effort in blocking
Seaforth’s shots, earning a shutout.
The final score was 3-0.
Blyth’s next opponents were from
Mildmay on Saturday night around
10 p.m. Due to the poor weather
conditions only eight members of
the Blyth Midget team braved the
snowy roads to attend the game. Two
Bantam players helped out to give
the team a much-needed break and
catch their breath periodically
throughout this match.
Coaches and fans were treated to
an outstanding game of broomball
by this shorthanded group of
players. Each team member showed
an excellent effort and really pushed
themselves to play to their potential
and stay in this game.
In the second period, Blyth
accidentally left Mildmay’s centre
man unattended and a goal was
scored against Blyth. With a minute
and a half left in the game Reinink
cleared the ball out of Blyth’s end.
Roetcisoender picked it up and
flipped it over Mildmay players to
Drost, who broke away from the
play and went one-on-one with
Mildmay’s goalie. Drost won with a
quick chip over the keeper’s
shoulder to tie the game.
Overtime play was required,
meaning four players from each
team and no goalie. Unfortunately
Blyth was caught pinching up and
Mildmay got around the players and
scored a goal to win the game.
This loss signalled the end of the
tournament for Blyth. They finished
in third place out of a total of five
Midget teams.
Coaches, Billy Greidanus and
Richard Roetcisoender were pleased
with the team’s performance in this
tournament.

played in Clifford on the weekend. (Vicky Bremner photo)
