Greetings for the New Year from
three friends who have moved
beyond Brussels. Ties and contacts
remain for all three and so to you
from Phyllis Beacom, Jeanette
Boynton and Bev Brown greetings
and salutations.
January is a special month, a time
to think and dream and play games.
When acquaintances play games
together like spoons, pit or tidley
winks or Trouble a new dimension
is reached in a friendship. Games
night at the United Church last
week brought out actions that were
quite revealing for all those
attending. I can hardly wait for next
month.
Snow and temperature are the hot
topics of conversation this month as
both have arrived in staggering
numbers. Nothing like a -30°C to
let you know that this is really
winter.
The height of the banks around
houses should certainly help with
the insulation factor.
Mrs. Mitchell’s in Violet Hill (a
restaurant), was the place of a fun
gathering on Sunday. Joan Jacobs
met her brother Jim and wife Pat
while Ralph and I checked in with
Curt, Julie and Miss Ella over a
delicious dinner in the cozy
atmosphere of an old house. Golden
beets and spaghetti squash were
just two of the foods that made
dinner fun.
Catch up chatter from Christmas
and upcoming birthdays as well as
many other subjects that needed
discussed made the time fly by
much too quickly.
And of course Ella is the most
beautiful baby we saw.
Goodbye Isabel. Many friends
and family attended the funeral of
Isabel Alcock on Saturday to let her
children know how she affected
their lives.
Stories were shared with Bill,
Betty, Ross and Murray and their
families about her friendliness,
her smile, her generosity, her
many talents and acceptance of
others.
These were not news but
reassurances that their mom lived a
very good life.
Enjoy the peace of January and
get that closet reorganized.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
The Huron County Health Unit
wants to ensure that parents of
young children know that Health
Canada has recalled some Stork
Craft baby cribs. There have been
almost half a million cribs sold in
Canada at major stores.
All Stork Craft cribs with a
manufacturing date between May
2000 and November 2008 are
included in this voluntary recall. The
manufacturing date can be found on
the lower right hand corner of the
instruction sheet which is glued on
the mattress base.
The cribs were sold in various
styles and finishes. The manufacture
date, model number, crib name,
country of origin, and the firm's
name, address, and contact
information are located on the
assembly instruction sheet attached
to the mattress support board. The
firm's insignia “storkcraft baby” is
inscribed on the drop side teething
rail of some cribs.
The metal support brackets used
to support the mattress frame can
crack and break after stress is put
upon them during incorrect
installation.
If one or more support brackets
break, the mattress could potentially
collapse and create a dangerous gap
between the mattress and crib rails
in which a child can become
entrapped and suffocate.
Health Canada reports it has
received one complaint in which the
metal mattress support bracket
failed.
The products meet current safety
standards. Stork Craft, in co-
operation with Health Canada, is
conducting a voluntary recall of this
consumer product.
Consumers should not return the
crib. Contact Stork Craft to receive a
free replacement kit with new
mattress support brackets.
For more information, consumers
may contact Stork Craft toll-free at
866-361-3321 anytime to order the
free replacement kit or log on to
www.storkcraft.com.

The first meeting of the Grey
Township 4-H Club was held at
Monique Baan’s.
Members said the 4-H pledge,
then Monique told them the club
topic was Batters Up! which is
baking. They were asked to take a
five-minute questionnaire so they
could learn more about each other.
But it was kind of a trick by the
leaders to see if they would follow
all the directions on the
questionnaire exactly.
It ended up that no one read
through all the questions before
starting the questionnaire like the
first sentence said. The leaders
stressed that this is why it is so
important to read all of a recipe
before starting to make it.
Members then split into three
groups and made brownies. There
were three different methods: from
scratch in the oven, from scratch in
the microwave and store-bought
brownie mix in the oven.
The microwave group was done
first, then the brownie mix, then
from scratch in the oven was the last
one to be done. Everyone tasted the
different brownies and judged them.
Club president is Sam Fretz, vice-
president is Alyssa Cronin, treasurer
is Chelsey Terpstra and press
reporter is Makayla Tyerman. There
are 17 members and the club name is
the Grey Township Snickerdoodles.

The nasty weather cancelled the
Cadet meeting at the Brussels
Legion on Tuesday evening, Jan. 13.
On Wednesday evening, Jan. 14
the Huron County Beef Producers
held their annual meeting. There
were around 80 in attendance,
including MP Ben Lobb.
They enjoyed a roast beef dinner
prepared by the Branch. Comrades
helping out were Lloyd Glanville,
Barrie Currie, Deb Cann, Mabel
Willis, Elaine Nichol, Cecil Moore,
Jo-Ann McDonald, Judy Lee, Mabel
Glanville, Norm Dobson and Rick
McDonald.
Youth earning their community
service hours by helping with dishes
were Dalton Hamilton, Chris Ross
and Josh Struthers.
The Thursday night darts had 15
players out for a fun night. New
darters dropped in.
In first place were Greta Zehr,
Matthew McHardy and Ron
Schmidt. The second-place team
was Lawrence Machan and Marlene
Little. The high shots recorded for
the night were by Marlene shooting
106 and Ron shooting 140. Wow!
The Brussels Pipe Band is busy
practising for the upcoming Robbie
Burns evening. They will be playing
throughout the night. The event,
sponsored by Melville Presbyterian
Church features a dinner and dance
with a definite Scottish theme. So
brush off your kilt and or plaid
accessories and plan on attending
Jan. 24. Tickets are available from
church members.
Our condolences are sent to the
Alcock family on the passing of
Isabel Alcock. Isabel was a long-
time member of the Ladies
Auxiliary of the Branch. She was a
great lady who wanted to help out in
any way she could. She attended the
annual program at Parkwood
Hospital for many years with
Comrade Mabel Glanville and
always enjoyed her day out.
The Friday night supper had
surprisingly huge attendance
considering the weather had been
terrible all day. A crowd of over 50
people dropped by to enjoy the roast
beef dinner. Next week will be
chicken and rice.
Saturday was the Zone euchre and
there were 12 Comrades, three
teams, off to have a fun day. They
went to Mitchell Legion and joined
45 other teams. The Brussels Branch
wasn't the top winners but they did
very well with a third-place team
and an eighth-place team. The teams
will advance to District play in
Kitchener in March. Getting third
were Eric Ross, Norm Dobson,
Bush Whittard and Lloyd Glanville.
The other team was Jim Brown,
Sandra Josling, Rick and Jo-Ann
McDonald. Enjoying the day’s play
was team John Harrison, Harry
Smith and Glenn and Greta Zehr.
