The Saugeen Maitland Lightning
Bantam AA Girls came home with
gold medals after a hard-fought
tournament in Scarborough this
weekend.
In game one against the hometown
Sharks, the Lightning won 5-1 with
goals scored by Sara Gossell, Laura
Irwin, with two,Vanessa Armstrong,
and Nicole Marriage. Assists went to
Shelsie Popp with two, Kelly
Gribbons and Kelly Garrow.
In the second game, the Ohio
Flames defeated the Lightning. L.
Irwin scored the lone goal for the
Lightning in this 2-1 contest.
Marriage and Abbey Gibson had the
assists on the goal.
In the third game it was a 2-1 win
against the Cornwall Typhoons
putting the Lightning in second
place in their pool behind the Ohio
Flames and advancing them to the
semi-final game.
Goals were scored by L. Irwin
assisted by Gossell and Marriage.
Goalie Chelsea Houle earned the
victory for the Lightning.
The girls fought hard against a
strong Kanata Rangers team in the
semi-final, and at the end of three
periods the score was tied at three
goals each. Less than one minute
into the overtime, L. Irwin scored
her second goal of the game,
securing the 4-3 victory and
advancing the Lightning to the
finals.
Other goals were scored by
Marcie Landman and Gossell, with
assists from L. Irwin, Marriage and
Caroline McDowell. Despite illness,
centre Hannah Davidson shadowed
her opposing player, limiting Ranger
offensive opportunities.
The final match-up was against
the Kingston Ice Wolves, as they had
eliminated Ohio in the other semi-
finals.
The Ice Wolves came out
physically, catching the Lightning
off guard, and scored first when a
player got free and walked out in
front of the net. But the Saugeen
girls would not be intimidated and
pulled ahead 3-2 by the dying
minutes of the third, forcing the Ice
Wolves to pull their goalie.
Brooklyn Irwin popped in an empty
netter, increasing the margin to 4-2.
With the goalie still pulled, the Ice
Wolves were able to find the net one
more time, for a final score of 4-3.
Other goals were scored by
Gribbons, Gossell and Marriage,
with assists from L. Irwin with two,
Landman and Georgia Ottewell.
Goalie Stephanie Sluys made
several outstanding saves and was
awarded the player of the game for
the Lightning.
The defensive core of Kelly
Garrow, Abbey Gibson, Ottewell,
Popp and Carly Smith played
aggressively, providing offensive
opportunities, breaking up plays and
protecting the goalies on numerous
occasions.
Usually Dogs are scared of
thunder. But in the home barn the
Blyth Atom Local League Bulldogs
showed no fear of the Zurich
Thunder in recent hockey action.
In the first period Zurich scored
but the Dogs answered back with a
nice shot from Owen Andrews, set
up by Brett Glousher and Colton
Rodger.
The Dogs went down by a goal in
the second, but answered with a
goal from Gavin Workman. A nice
breakaway goal tied the game. With
only one minute left Blyth went up
by a goal from Patrick Franken set
up by Rodger and Glousher.
Goalie Jeremy Wilts was stellar in
the second, allowing only one goal
on the shots he faced.
With only seconds gone in the
third Craig Raynard grabbed a loose
puck in Blyth’s end and rang a pass
around the boards to Rodger, who
chipped the puck past the defence
and found a speeding Workman for a
clear break. Workman went directly
to the net, put a nifty move on the
goalie and slid the puck on his
backhand into a wide-open net.
Not to be outdone the next line
went out and punched in a goal of
their own. This time a pass from
Andrews to Glousher in the slot for
a shot that was saved, only to be
slammed home by Franken. Raynard
grabbed the puck in Blyth’s end and
sent a pass to Rodger who chipped
the puck past their defence to
Workman. He grabbed the pass for a
clear break and slid it into an empty
net.
The Thunder scored one more.
Rodger then sent a rocket the back
of the net for another Blyth goal.
Seconds later Workman grabbed a
loose puck and was gone again,
sending a shot past the goalie for
another goal.
The action slowed slightly for the
next few minutes only to be
interrupted by another goal from
Rodger set up by a nifty pass from
Cameron Gauthier. Then Glousher
sent a quick shot past the tired
goalie for Blyth’s 11th goal of the
game.
Dogs show no fear of Thunder
The Blyth Midget Local League is
enjoying a solid season this far.
After 16 regular season games, they
stand with five wins, seven losses
and four ties.
The season opener saw Blyth
against BCH. The game ended in a
5-5 tie.
Game two left the team wanting a
little more after falling two goals
short of a win in their match against
Drayton. The team raised their
spirits and those of the staff and fans
when they beat Milverton 1-0 and
Minto 4-2 in the next two games.
Then, the Bulldogs found
themselves on the wrong side of the
scoreboard with a loss of 7-1 to
Drayton.
The Bulldogs played great games
against Milverton and Teeswater
even though the scores left them at a
loss.
A tie game with Listowel was a
great warmup to a big win against
Lucknow I. This was Lucknow’s
first loss of the season, making it a
sweet victory.
The next two games saw the
Midgets up against Mount Forest.
This ended with a tie and a win.
The team came out flying to beat
Minto 7-2, then tied Listowel in a 6-
6 goal scoring frenzy.
The next three games ended in a
loss for the Midgets, but the team
played well and each game could
have gone either way.
With three games postponed due
to weather, the team will have ample
opportunity to add some more points
to their stats.

The Blyth Dynamite PeeWee
broomball team travelled to play in
Palmerston this past weekend.
The Dynamite started out strong
keeping the play mostly in
Palmerston's end. Blyth's first goal
came when Matt Brindley and
Bailey Van Massenhoven worked
the ball up the boards and
Massenhoven spotted Kaitlin Bos
open in front of the net. She fired it
into the Palmerston net.
Palmerston came back five
minutes later, however, and tied it
up.
In the second period Palmerston
took the lead.
The Dynamite were able to tie it
up a few minutes later. Brindley
again started the rush up the ice and
got the ball over to Logan Forbes.
Forbes got a hard shot off into the
corner of the Palmerston net.
The regular time ended in a tie and
the teams went into overtime. The
overtime was some wild action with
neither team scoring the game
remained tied.
