to May 31.
The executive terms of office are
almost over and elections will be just
around the corner in three months.
They are now asking people to think
about taking a term of office and
sitting on the executive. There is
generally one meeting a month on
Tuesday evenings.
There are also plenty of
committees that could use another
member.
It is much easier when the jobs can
be done by many instead of by a few.
Please consider helping at the
Branch. Call and let someone know
of your thoughts or for more
information on the various
committees.
Missing from last week’s article
were a few names of Comrades who
participated at the Zone dart event.
Four Comrades having a good day
were John Harrison, Lawrence
Machan,Anita Little and Sara Little.
The Brussels Cadet Corps held its
sports night and went swimming at
the Vanastra pool on Tuesday
evening. There were lots of
donations of pop cans and such
dropped off at the Branch for them
and they appreciate everyone’s help
in their fundraising efforts. Keep
them coming.Congratulations to Cadet OfficerPaul Dawson and his wife Cory onthe birth of a daughter, Laura lastweek.
The Branch Veterans Service
Office Mabel Glanville has received
word that Randy Groundwater,
provincial service officer will be in
the area in February. Comrades
wishing an appointment should
contact Mabel by Jan. 22.
The Thursday night darts had 13
players return to the boards after the
Christmas break. The first-place
team of the night was Glenn Zehr
and Marlene Little. A playoff for
second place was won by partners
Gord Jacklin and Sandra Josling.
Finishing third were Norm Dobson
and Sharon Robbins. The high shots
of the night were Roger McHardy
with 114 and Marlene shooting 102.
The Friday night supper of sweet
and sour meatballs, rice and
macaroni was enjoyed by a good
crowd of nearly 35 people. This
coming week is roast beef.
The first euchre of 2009 saw 10
tables of players at play. The winners
were Delores Howatt and Dorothy
Dalton with 75 points. Second prize
went to Glenn Sellers and Ed
Stewart with 71 points and third
prize went to Ariel Woods and Hazel
McGonigle with 69 points. The
couple wishing for better luck was
Vera Lindner and Reta Davidson
who earned only 31 points. Thelucky lone hand prize winners wereRita Smith and Lloyd Appleby.Euchres are every two weeks andthe Branch is looking for a couple of
Comrades to help out. Contact the
Branch if you could be helpers.
The Sunday night dance had a new
band play for the evening. The
Country Sounds did a very good job
for the nearly 70 dancers in
attendance. Dances are every two
weeks.
Membership is an ongoing topic.
There are still a few folks out there
who have not paid their dues for
2009.
There is also the need for new
members. A misconception that you
must have an affiliation to an armed
forces person is not true.
Membership is open to any
Canadian citizen who is of federal
voting age, is not eligible for
ordinary or associate membership,
believes in the purposes of the Royal
Canadian Legion. They can join a
Legion Branch as an affiliate voting
member.
Ordinary members of the Royal
Canadian Legion are Canadian
citizens who served or are serving in
the Canadian Armed Forces,
Merchant Navy, etc. Her Majesty’s
Reserve Forces including Cadet
Instructors, The Royal Canadian
Mounted Police, the Canadian Coast
Guard, a city, municipal or
provincial police force officer plusother criteria sections. An associate member is also aCanadian citizen who is a spouse, child, grandchild, relative of an
ordinary member, parent, spouse,
child of an associate member, Cadet
civilian instructor (three years),
firefighter and other categories under
which citizens may join.
There are many categories under
which a person can join the Royal
Canadian Legion and we would
welcome any interested parties with
questions to drop into the Branch to
find out more.
Ten Brussels United Church
Women met at Maple Villa on Jan.
6.
Nelva Scott opened the meeting
with the UCW Purpose. Joan
Bernard read the minutes and the
treasurer’s report was given by
Isabelle Wheeler. The UCW had a
very busy and successful year in
2008 with projects, dinners and
lunches.
Many thank you cards were read
from shutins, for their boxes at
Christmas.
The UCW will have the February
birthday party at Huronlea, and hold
its regular meeting at that time.
Camp Menesetung sent an events
calendar for 2009 and a camp
registration form.
Pastor Sandra Cable asked how
many were interested in a spring
Bible study.
The UCW prayer was said and
Pastor Cable read the scripture,
Matthew 14: 22-33.
Mrs. Scott had a poem, Postscript,
then gave a meditation, Bits and
Pieces. She closed with a short story,
It’s Not Easy Being Green.
Hymns sung were All the Way My
Saviour Leads Me, and Will Your
Anchor Hold. Betty Campbell
accompanied at the piano.

Well Happy New Year, it still feels
like a pretty new year as we slip into
the second half of this new month.
Things are getting back to normal.
The visitors are all gone, the
decorations are nearly all the way
away and the diet is being given a
serious thought. I’m not real sure
that I like normal.
Peter Workman from Nunavut and
Phil Graber from Alberta have both
returned home after good visits with
family and friends over the festive
season.
The United Church was a happy
spot on Sunday as two beautiful
babies were baptized into the church
family. Hailey Lauren Beuermann
and Luke Murray Robert Fischer
behaved as their grandparents
thought they should and would.
Parents Josh and Patricia for Hailey
and Brett and Laura for Luke stood
by as the admiring congregation saw
the very best of their new babies and
were most relieved. Hailey’s great-
grandma, Nora Stephenson, played
her role in her usual style.
It’s annual meeting time.
Secretaries are waiting anxiously for
your reports. The meeting dates are
set for the review of last year’s
activities, so get your part done soon
and all will be well.
Time to get the tartan out and
dusted off.
Enjoy the peace of January.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

A NOTE FROM BETTY
At its Jan. 6 meeting, Huron East
council discussed the revisions made
to the current 911 policy and
procedure manual.
Councillor David Blaney said that
after looking over the revised edition
as compared to the initial edition,
none of the recommendations made
by Huron East were implemented in
the new version.
Deputy-mayor Bernie MacLellan
agreed, saying he would bring the
issue up to county council.
Blaney’s concerns were seconded
by Paul Josling and Brussels fire
chief Marty Bedard.
***
Council approved $694,094.09 in
accounts payable.
***
Clerk-administrator Jack
McLachlan said he and treasurer and
finance manager Brad Knight would
look into the possible cost of a
contract with Waste Management
and compare costs with the
municipality’s current waste
management company.
***
A request from the Wingham and
Area Health Professionals
Recruitment committee for a
member of council to sit on the
committee was rejected by council.
