The Blyth Lions made a contribution of $7,000 to the Emergency Services Training Centre. A total of 1,599 shoebox gifts were received at Huron Chapel for the annual campaign. Despite the snowfall, area trails remained closed, as the ground beneath was not frozen and there were many fields that still had corn in them. Janet Cardiff and her husband Bures Miller received 2008 Hnatyshyn Foundation Visual Arts Awards. Goalie Justin Peters of Blyth was called up from the American Hockey League’s River Rats to the Carolina Hurricanes. Blyth Festival celebrated a 2008 surplus of $175,633. The county was gearing up for Haunted Huron, part of Doors Open Ontario. Huron East cut the ribbon on its new health centre. After 14 years Huron went from red to blue, electing Conservative Ben Lobb as MP. The Linton family’s pork was featured on Casey’s fall menu. Playwright Paul Ciufo was nominated for the governor-general’s award. Education minister Kathleen Wynne was the guest speaker at the Huron-Bruce Liberal Association’s fundraising dinner in Brussels. Playwright/director Paul Thompson was among the 75 Canadians named by Her Excellency, The Right Honorable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada to the Order of Canada. Incumbent warden John Bezaire and South Huron councillor Ken Oke announced their intention to seek the warden’s chair. One of the pillars of East Wawanosh business and political community, Ernie Snell, passed away at the age of 92. Brussels revived its Fun Fest. A farmer discovered crop circles near Holmesville. Huron East council moved ahead on the tendering process for a new Brussels Library. Signs were installed promoting Walton as Motocross Town. The season wasn’t even half over and ticket sales at Blyth Festival were up 40 per cent over 2007’s season. Blyth firefighters responded to a call at Grand View Restaurant. The process of obtaining a heritage designation for the Brussels Library began. The Blyth Festival’s Garage was renamed The Phillips Studio. Gerard Kennedy, Stéphane Dion’s top advisor was in Huron County to speak to local politicians. Blyth United Church congregation welcomed Rev. Gary Clark as their new minister. A Toronto woman was charged with careless driving after the vehicle she was driving went out of control and slammed into Stickers Restaurant in Auburn. The Seaforth Country Classic got underway. Weather dampened enthusiasm for the Thresher Reunion fans. A new round of accommodation reviews was announced, including one for North Central Huron, which affected Blyth, Hullett and East Wawanosh schools, as well as Wingham and Turnberry. Brussels Terry Fox Run raised $7,445. Two weather systems moved through the county as a result of a tropical depression then after a brief lull the tail end of Hurricane Ike brought more rain. Blyth got its crossing guard at the corner of King and Queen Streets. The McGavin cousins, Brandon and Jacob, did Huron proud with their achievements at the International Plowing Match. School students, Katelyn Watsonand Nicole Greidanus took on aproject to honour teacher LaurieForrester, who died of breast cancerin 2006. The project is a memorialgarden in the school’s courtyard. Bicycles for Humanity was a great success with 400 bikes collected to be sent to Africa. The intersection in Ethel was finally going to get its stop sign. Blyth was embarking on an exciting historic project - the automation of the village bell at Memorial Hall.
