The Citizen, 2009-01-08, Page 19The weather played a big role in
this Christmas season. On the Sunday
before Christmas, a snowstorm blew
in and made for some very nasty
driving. Two families, VanVliets and
Gerbers report that it took over an
hour to come from Monkton due to
the lack of visibility.
The Flood family Christmas, held
at noon, was cut short. Folks headed
home early after eating, so as not to
get stormstayed.
The Walton Hall flooded with the
rains on the day after Boxing Day,
and with three shop vacs working and
a big fan and dehumidifier used, the
mess was cleaned up in time for a
family Christmas on Sunday. The
Thamers celebrated at the hall and
with 17 kids plus 17 adults.
Then the wind blew through the
area. Trees came down, steel on
buildings was torn off, or curled up
on roofs, fascia was torn off and
outdoor Christmas decorations are
now a little worse for wear.
This area was lucky and did not
lose hydro, but many areas did. Some
were without power for three days.
It reminds us to be checking on our
own storm supplies in case it hits us
next time. Lantern oil, flashlights,
good batteries, bottled water,
generators checked and working,
propane for barbecues for cooking if
needed, are just some of the things I
can think of. Get prepared in case it
hits us next time.
Some folks had special Christmas
celebrations including Jean Bewley. She travelled to Airdrie, Alberta tohave Christmas with youngestdaughter Brenda and her family. Jeanflew out and was there for a few daysprior to her birthday on Dec. 21.Jean’s family was there as well asLiz (Bewley) and Bob Hopchins andfamily Erin and Ian, from Edmontonto join in the celebration. Jean feels
this was a very special Christmas, as
it was the first Christmas for her
great-granddaughter Bree, nearly
eight months old.
The family gathered at the home of
Brenda and Dan Raven, with John,
Jilly and Bree Raven and Scott and
Heather Raven gathering to have a
great time.
Having a special holiday visitor
home from Kirkland Lake were the
Walker and Mitchell families. Shaun
and Erin Walker were able to be
home for a 10-day visit over the
Christmas season. Spending and
splitting time among all the families
kept them busy. Shaun’s family, Jack
and Lynn Walker of Belgrave and
Erin’s family, Ross Mitchell, Ripley
and Julie McKercher, Wroxeter were
happy to have them home for the
holidays.
The Mitchells celebrated
Christmas together at the home of
Holly Mitchell and Mike
DesChamplain and James and Kylie.
It was nice to run into Erin while she
was home and hopefully they had a
safe trip home to Kirkland Lake.
The McGavin family rented a
couple of condos in Collingwood
Blue Mountain after Christmas for
five days. They were able to ski every
day. Even though it rained on Sunday,
runs were still open. Grandma Marie
was the chief cook for the crew,
except for Sunday when the hydro
went out and they had to go to
Thornbury to eat. They were all able
to be together, all 23 of them,
including Bryan, Heather, Jared,
Jessica, Hayden, and Ella Kelso ofNorth Bay, Brian, Shelley, Brandon,Abby and Tyson McGavin, Jeff,Shannon, Jacob, MacKenzie andTeagan McGavin and Pat, Cathy,Brent, Shayna and Alex Melady. They report having a great timetogether and a great get-away.Darryl and Glenda Morrison andchildren and Amanda and Justin
travelled to Florida and stayed at
Orange Lake resort. They spent four
days at Disneyland. They also visited
Kennedy Space Centre and Daytona.
As far as the kids were concerned
they could go back to Disneyland
anytime and the sooner the better.
The second family to make the trek
to Florida was Mike and Susan
Alexander and children Brent, Sarah
and Nicole, along with Grandma
Elsie Carter. They stayed at the
Celebrity Resort and went to
Disneyland for a couple of days.
Their trip was more of relaxing,
swimming and spending time
together, but of course Disney was
very popular.
A couple of days away never hurts
anyone and going to the States for a
little after-Christmas shopping
sounds like fun. Jim Alton and
Dianne Machan, along with daughter
Tracey and Steve Eckert and family,
Kelsey, Kerissa, Kassidy and Tyler
spent a couple of days near Birch
Run. They went to Bronner’s
Christmas store at Frankenmuth and
did some shopping at Port Huron as
well. The kids spent a lot of time
swimming in the pool and taking
advantage of the games room at the
hotel. They had a nice time together.
The Christmas season seems to
always be a sad time for some
families and this year is no different.
Our sympathies and condolences are
sent to three families of our area.
The family of Elva Brown have
been left to mourn the loss of a
wonderful wife and mother. Our
sympathies to John and to daughtersSharon and Elaine and EldonChamney. Elva was a wonderfullyfriendly lady I enjoyed visitingwhenever she came to our house withJohn to the egg depot. She was agreat volunteer in whatever she wasassociated with. She was a Post Noble Grand of theMorningstar Rebekah Lodge in
Brussels as well as a Past District
Deputy of the Lodge. She gave 110
per cent of what she was involved in
and she will be missed by many.
Our sympathies are sent to the
families of the late Anna Dolmage,
formerly of McKillop. Son Neil
Dolmage and daughter Carol Blake
still live in the area.
Our sympathies are expressed to
the Finlayson families on the loss of
Ina Finlayson. Ina has been a
familiar voice on the Murphy bus
radio system for many years and for
all the years I have driven. She was a
friend of my mother and always
inquired about her when we would
meet at bus meetings or on the street.
There were many folks who had to
spend the holidays in the hospital
and we wish them continued health
improvements. In Stratford hospital
are Maxine Marks and Mary
(TenPas) Van Barnezeld. Ethel
Brewer is in Seaforth hospital and
Doris Foster is in Wingham.
Welcoming in the New Year with a
bit of a mishap was Maddy
McNichol. She fell and has suffered
a broken wrist. Maddy is the
daughter of Dan and Lynn
McNichol.
Welcoming a new grandchild into
their family on New Year’s Day were
Bruce and Marg Whitmore. It’s
second girl, Jaedyn for Brent and
Colleen Whitmore. The excited
siblings, Kaitlin and Zachary, have
been having a great time staying with
Grandma and Grandpa.

FROM WALTON
Duff’s United Church had its final
service under the direction of Rev.
Sandra Yule on Dec. 28.
Rev. Sandra has accepted a
position at Fallowfield, near Kanata.
Her reflection was about moving
and how a community accepts a
stranger into their midst. For her,
coming from the city to a rural
charge was a big change, but when
she arrived she felt more than
welcome by a committee sitting on
her new front steps with a basket of
goodies.
She experienced the warmth of an
extraordinary community in both
Walton and Bluevale, she said, and
leaves here with a wealth of
memories and a feeling of being
blessed.
She enjoyed her new experiences
in riding in combines, feeding cows,
being terrified by a bat and had help
cheerfully arrive in help in the wee
hours of the morning. She shared
