The Brussels Atom Reps faced
Listowel this past Saturday and
knew how to bring in the New Year
in style.
Just 50 seconds into the game
Logan Kellington netted the first
goal to take the lead. Listowel came
back to tie it up.
With just 3:43 left in the first,
Kellington scored his second of the
game to again take the lead but
Listowel tied it again. The second
period saw Listowel pull ahead early
on. It was quick back and forth, back
and forth for the next eight minutes
of the game. Kailey Wheeler pulled
the team ahead with an assist from
Connor Bridge.
Kellington netted his hattrick to
end the second period.
Wheeler netted her second of the
game early into the third period to
make it 5-3 Brussels. With just 1:11
left on the clock, Dawson Peachey
opened netted the sixth and final
goal for Brussels.
Up from the Novice team were
Noah Terpstra and Avery McArter.
Both played very well in their
positions.
The defence of Sean Mitchell,
Kiaran Jared, Nic Zwep and Dylan
McNeil was solid. They stopped the
play from reaching the net several
times over.
Goalie Derrick Waechter made 16
saves this game.
The Brussels Atom Reps are
travelling to Tara this weekend to
play in their tournament. The kids
will also take in an OHL Owen
Sound Attack game.
On Jan. 2 Mildmay Midget boys
came to Blyth to play a makeup
broomball game that had been
cancelled in December due to poor
weather conditions.
Tyler Hallahan played goalie for
the first half of the game.
At about five minutes Blyth earned
a penalty. Mildmay took advantage
of their powerplay and scored.
A short time later Greg
Roetcisoender broke away from the
play and took a wind-up shot from
the corner to score for Blyth.
Jon Hakkers stood up and covered
the net for Blyth in the second for the
first time this season.
At the top of the period,
Roetcisoender earned the assist on
the next goal scored by Alex Hogan.
Mildmay played a strong half and
scored three more goals to win the
game 4-2.
Coach Billy Greidanus thought the
Midgets played a strong first half
and made good use of the sides of
the rink. During the second half the
team played a little sloppy, making
passes in the centre of the ice, he
said. These plays were often
intercepted by their opponents.
The Midgets travel to Palmerston
on Jan. 11 for their next game.
The Blyth Brussels Bantam girls
took part in the Milverton
tournament and met in their first
game a very strong opponent in the
host team.
Having played Milverton
previously in an exhibition game,
the girls knew it was going to be a
tough ride. They held on respectably
for the first two periods but were
unable to find the steam in the third
and came out with a 7-0 loss.
Their next game was against
another strong team from Grand
River and again came out with a
disappointing 7-0 loss.
The girls were undeterred and
showed up to play a solid game three
against Mitchell. They only allowed
one goal in the first two periods and
had many chances on the opponent’s
net. However, they were unable to
hold on and were handed their third
loss of the tournament, this one with
a final score of 4-0.
The tournament format allowed
them to come back and play a final
game four against Mitchell once
again. After having just watched a
thrilling win by the Blyth Brussels
PeeWee girls team, they were
pumped and ready to score some
goals. the game was pretty much a
repeat of their previous game against
Mitchell for the first two periods but
the Blyth Brussels girls didn’t give
up and finally Lauren McNichol
with assists from Nicole Middegaal
and Lauren Cronin, slid one past the
Mitchell netminder to give the girls a
tally on the scoreboard.
The final two minutes of play were
nailbiters for the spectators in the
stands. The game ended with a 2-1
hard-fought win for the Mitchell
team.
In Lower Lakes Female HockeyLeague action, the SaugeenMaitland Lightning AA Midgetsbeat the Cambridge Roadrunners 4-0 at home Dec. 30 with Emily Kelly,Port Elgin earning the shut-out. Tammy Freiburger, Wingham had
two goals, with Belina Hooper,
Meaford and a Bantam call-up
player, Sarah Gossell, both putting
in singles.
Monday night, the Lightning
fought a nail-biting battle in the
bronze medal game of the
Mississauga Chiefs Christmas
Tournament, falling 3-2 to the
Toronto Aeros.
The Lightning had entered the
semi-finals in second place behind
Brampton (which ended up winning
the tournament) despite the
Lightning winning 4-2 against
Rochester, New York; a draw of 2-2
with Detroit’s Little Caesers;
winning 6-0 against Oshawa;
winning 3-0 against Glouchester andlosing 1-0 in the quarter-finals toStoney Creek. Goalies, Emily Kelly and SarahMcGall, Owen Sound earned ashutout each, during the tournament, and both had a 0.93 save
percentages.

the team throughout the weekend

Brussels Atoms face Listowel
Snow may have been here since
November but it hasn’t meant an
early start to the snowmobile
season.
The first snow, which arrived and
stayed weeks before winter’s official
arrival, caught many off guard.
Trails hadn’t yet been marked by
volunteers and the fact that there was
still corn in many fields meant that
many traditional routes couldn’t be
used.
Then, when it looked as if it would
be smooth sledding, Mother Nature
brought a deluge of rain and strong
winds which soon cleared the fields,
and lifted markers.
As a result by the first full week of
January trails through District 9,
which includes the Brussels and
Blyth areas, remain closed.
Keith Mulvey, president of the B-
W Trailblazers, said the situation is
not uncommon. “I keep track and
through the years often into January
we haven’t been able to
snowmobile.”
Mervyn Bauer, who grooms the
Brussels trails, agreed. “Last year
the season didn’t start until the first
of February, but we got six good
weeks of snowmobiling after
that.”
In the Blyth area, ice is a big
problem at this point, said Bruce
Howson. “The base is still there, but
the trails are very icy and dangerous.
Howson said it will only take six
inches to a foot of snow, then a
chance to groom, to create good
conditions.
Mulvey too says that a good dump
of snow, which was expected this
week, and an opportunity for
volunteers to get back out and
replace stakes that have fallen is all
that’s keeping the closed signs in
place.
“Just be patient and wait. Then be
ready to go when that snow gets
here.”
The Ontario Federation of
Snowmobile Clubs reminds that
closed trails are unsafe for travel.

The Brussels Atom Local League
faced Goderich during the Christmas
break.
The puck was back and forth
between the players until the middle
of the first period when Kailey
Wheeler scored with a pass from
Dalen Martin to take a 1-0 lead.
It took Goderich five minutes to tie
it.
The second period saw Goderich
take the lead, then Brussels tied it
with an unassisted goal by Martin.
Two minutes later, Christopher Van
Veen scored, assisted by Seth Nichol
and Bennett Newell.
Goderich came out ready in the
third and quickly tied it up. The play
continued back and forth with each
team vying for another goal. With
just 49 seconds left on the clock
Goderich scored to take the lead then
ten seconds later, scored again.
Brussels lost a hard-fought battle
5-3. Goalie Konrad McArter made
several great saves.
