On Jan. 3, Mildmay came to play an exciting and very competitive game of broomball. Bryce Glousher stood in net for Blyth and saw lots of action, making some fantastic saves to keep his team in the game. Mildmay received a tripping penalty two-thirds of the way through the first period, yet scored while shorthanded. There was lots of action in this game, with the ball moving equally into both ends of the ice. Blyth had many opportunities to score, but they just couldn’t get the ball past Mildmay’s keen goalie. With less then two minutes on the clock, Blyth pulled their goalie but in spite of a valiant effort they couldn’t tie the game. The final score was a 1-0 victory for Mildmay. With a little ice time left on the clock, the coaches decided to practise overtime. With two tournaments coming, up this is an important part of the game to prepare for. Both teams scored a goal during the five minutes of overtime. Blyth’s Derek deBoer scored for his team with an assist from Hunter Broda. Coach Gord Stute was pleased with the team’s performance during this broomball match. Mildmay edges Bantams 1-0 The Blyth Atom Reps hosted Howick Saturday, Dec. 27. The third period saw the final goal scored by Marshall. Assisting this time was D. Coultes. The final score was 3-0 for Blyth. The second game was on Tuesday morning against Ilderton. This proved to be a little more of a challenge for Blyth. The scoring was even in the first with one. Blyth’s was a nice little shot to the net by Weber. He was assisted by Howson and Dale. The second period saw no goals by Blyth, but Ilderton scored five. In the third Howson scored, assisted by Dale. Blyth, however, had no more left in them leaving the score at 6-2. Blyth’s third game was against Goderich. In the second with J. Rodger scored the first goal of the game with assistance from Jordan Hubbard. The second goal of the period was scored by Howson assisted by Hubbard. Goderich scored its one and only in the second period. The third period saw goals by Justin Rodger and Marshall with assistance by Howson. Blyth came home with the B championship. The Brussels Tykes had a tough game against BCH on Saturday. The second period they scored two more with credit going to Wade Machan for both. Assisting were Dustin Fritz, Jacob Roth and Brent Alexander. The final was 9-5 win for BCH. On the ball It was a good game for the Blyth PeeWee Green broomball squad as they hosted Seaforth on Saturday afternooon and whitewashed their visitors by a score of 3-0. (Bonnie Gropp photo) The Brussels PeeWee Locals travelled to Monkton last week. They did extremely well, taking the win late in the third. Colton Hastings netted a top shelf shot late in the first period but Monkton tied it up before the buzzer. Tim Waechter scored in the second period and again, Monkton tied it. The pressure was on for Brussels to stay focused. Curtis Bloemberg put one in with just seconds left on the clock in the third to take a 3-2 win. The defence and forwards played very well as the action was fast paced, back and forth, throughout the entire game. Goalie Austin Jamieson-Johnston played his best making more than 20 saves throughout the game. The team played Minto last Friday night. In the second period Tanner Cardiff lit up the scoreboard with an assist from T. Waechter to take a 1-0 lead. The Brussels players worked very hard to try and score again in the second period, but it was Minto racking up the points to finish the second period ahead 4-1. In the third Ben Hruska scored, then Anthony Vader made it 4-3. Hruska scored again with an assist from Bloemberg. Neither team was able to break the 4-4 tie before the end of the game. Jamieson-Johnston was solid in net. Brussels will face Listowel on home ice this Friday night. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Coming into the weekend it was anew year and time for change and that is what the Minor Atoms did. The last time they played Waterloo they lost 7-1 and took a 5- 7 loss against Brantford. This time the Minor Atom Lakers took a 180-degree turn and beat both teams. “This is what hard work and improvement is all about,” explained coach Shawn Hertel. The game against Waterloo ended in a 3-2 victory. Goalie Brock Baier of Wallace saved the team in the beginning of the first period. Noah Kuno of Stratford scored the first goal assisted by Tanner Hertel of Sebringville. Eric Charlebois of Saugeen Shores scored the second goal, assisted by Hertel and Kuno. Mitchell Newson of Wingham scored the winner assisted by Justin Beuermann of Seaforth. There was excellent back checking by Will Thibeault of Stratford and Scott Chisholm of Seaforth. On Sunday the Minor Atoms travelled to Brantford for a 6-2 win. Baily Paquette of Stratford played a solid game in net with 23 shots. Kuno scored the first goal assisted by Hertel. Thibeault scored the second goal assisted by Jacob Rooke of Embro. Hertel scored assisted by Kuno, then Quinton Maddock ofOwen Sound took a nice wrist shot outside the blue line and put it in the left top shelf on a rush out of his own end unassisted. Beuermann scored assisted by Newson and Chisholm on a good honest effort from their line. Kuno scored his second assisted by Hertel and Ben Derrough of Goderich. Charlebois did not make the scoresheet but did the small things that contributed to his line for a successful weekend which really shows how you can be a great player but not get on the score sheet. Cody Treble of Blyth played a good grinder roll on the ice which helps the team winning those battles. The defence, Bradley Kraemer of Stratford, Brennan Stapleton of St. Marys, Evan Moorehead of Stratford, Chad Treble of Blyth, Derrough and Maddock handled the pressure better with great communication made some nice end-to-end rushes with the puck. You can catch the Minor Atom Lakers this weekend on Sunday, Jan. 11 at 5 p.m. at the Maitland Recreation Centre in Goderich as they take on Cambridge. Jan. 16-18 the team travels to Cambridge for the Preston International Tournament. Close one The Bantam boys broomball team from Blyth took on a closely-matched opponent from Mildmay in recent action and came away on the losing side of a 1-0 score.
