On Dec. 22 Brussels PeeWees
Reps braved the weather to travel to
Blyth and take on the Blyth
Bulldogs.
Brussels was first to hit the
scoreboard when Lexi Smith scored
off a pass from Jordan Sholdice.
Blyth came back to tie up the game
before the buzzer ended the first
period. Connor Rodger had an
unassisted goal.
The Bulldogs dominated the
second period scoring six goals.
Dustin Pennington scored the first
goal with help from Spencer
Stevenson. Next, Arden Coultes
scored with help from Stevenson.
Then Stevenson put one in with
assists by Pennington and Coultes.
Mike VanWyk pumped one in
Brussels’ net assisted by Ryan
Nesbitt and Trystan Weber. Matt
VanWyk also put one in the net with
help from brother Mike and Weber.
The final goal of the second period
was buried by Stevenson after a pass
from Pennington and Rodger.
Blyth kept control of the game in
the third period. Coultes scored
back-to-back goals to earn a hat-
trick. Both goals were assisted by
Stevenson. The VanWyk twins added
another goal to the scoreboard, with
Mike getting the goal and Matt
getting the assist.
Brussels kept up the fight with
Brock McLean scoring off a pass
from Hayden TenPas. The VanWyk
twins scored the last goal of the
game. This time Mike set up brother
Matt who bulged the twine. The final
score was 11-2 for Blyth.
The Blyth PeeWees travelled to
Tiverton on Dec. 27 to take part in
the Kincardine Silver Stick
tournament.
In the first game Blyth took on
Flesherton. The first period was
scoreless but with 4:22 left in the
second, Flesherton snuck one by
goalie Dalton Carey.
In the third Matt VanWyk tied the
game off a pass by his brother Mike.
With 1:09 left in the third Stevenson
scored the winning goal, assisted by
Coultes and Pennington. With one
minute left Flesherton pulled their
goalie to add the extra attacker, but
the Dogs held strong and Carey
denied them any more goals. With
0:05 left in the game Matt VanWyk
put one in the empty net for the
insurance goal. Blyth went on to win
the game 3-1.
The Dogs played a very
disciplined game staying out of the
penalty box the entire game. Game
MVP was awarded to Matt VanWyk.
In Blyth’s second game they met
Minto which had defeated Seaforth
in the morning.
Minto came out hard and their
efforts were rewarded as they scored
with 9:21 left in the first period.
After shaking the cobwebs out the
Dogs came back with a goal from
Matt VanWyk and an assist from his
brother Mike.
With the second period being a
battle of goaltending both teams
were held off the scoreboard.
The third period started with a lot
of physical play. Minto ended up
with two players in the box.
Blyth capitalized on the two-man
advantage. Stevenson passed to Matt
VanWyk who buried the puck. With
10:57 left Pennington took a pass
from Braydon Whitfield, and scored.
Minto came back and snuck one
by Carey but Blyth went on to win 3-
2.
The Dogs played their second
straight penalty-free game of the
tournament. Game MVP for Blyth
was awarded to Coultes.
The PeeWees travelled to
Kincardine for their third game of
the tournament on Dec. 30 to play
New Hamburg.
Blyth opened the scoring in the
first with a shot by Matt VanWyk.
Assists went to Whitfield and Mike
VanWyk. Pennington scored Blyth’s
second goal on a pass from Coultes
that originated from Stevenson.
New Hamburg slipped one by
Blyth’s goaltender, Dalton Carey.
With 11:36 left in the third,
Rodger passed to Coultes who then
passed to Stevenson who bulged the
twine to put Blyth up 3-1. Mike Van
Wyk scored with assists to
Stevenson and Rodger.
The final score was 4-1 for Blyth.
As Blyth went undefeated in the
round-robin play they moved on to
face Shelburne in the semi-finals.
Shelburne snuck one by Carey late
in the first.
The second period started on a
positive note for Blyth with
Whitfield scoring on a pass from
Stevenson.
But with 5:49 left in the first
Shelburne snuck in a second goal.
The third period started out with
Shelburne getting their third goal of
the game.
Then Coultes scored, assisted by
Stevenson and Pennington. Mike
VanWyk stepped up and tied the
game.
Shelburne scored again to take the
4-3 lead.
With a minute left Blyth pulled
their goalie to go with an extra
attacker. Ryan Nesbitt tied the game,
Blyth’s efforts were rewarded when
Matt VanWyk scored the winning
goal with assists from his brother
Mike and Wyatt Carey.
On Dec. 31 Blyth headed to
Kincardine to play in the finals
against Seaforth.
The first period started with lots of
chances at both ends of the rink.
Seaforth was able to get on the
scoreboard first.
During the second period Seaforth
got four more goals.
In the third Blyth played hard and
never gave up, keeping Seaforth off
the game sheet for the third period. It
was a solid performance in net by
goaltender Carey.
The game ended with Seaforth
winning 5-0.
Blyth was awarded their medals
and banner as finalists. Stevenson
was awarded game MVP for Blyth.
PeeWees Silver Stick finalists
The Blyth-Brussels PeeWee girls
travelled to Milverton on Dec. 29
and 30. It wold be the first extended
test against C teams.
The team opened with a 6-2
victory against the tournament
hosts. Player of the game was Lexi
Smith who collected two goals and
an assist. Taylor Higgins also netted
a pair of goals, with singles going to
Delayna Smith and Mackenzie
Nesbitt.
Next up was the Waterloo Ravens.
The team jumped out quickly and
built a 3-0 lead in the first five
minutes. Another was added late in
the second period to round out the
scoring.
Lexi Smith netted a pair of goals
with singles going to Nesbitt and
Jordyn Sholdice.
For the last half of the game
Waterloo would get several chances
to score and applied pressure to get
on the board. Every time they were
turned away by the player of the
game, goaltender Lindsay Shiell.
The final round-robin game was
against the Grand River Mustangs.
Against, the first period was a good
one, with the team grabbing a 3-0
lead. Grand River would have the
edge in goals during the second
period by a 2-1 margin. There was
no further scoring resulting in a 4-2
victory.
Goalscorers were T. Higgins,
Ashley Higgins, D. Smith and L.
Smith.
The game was a spirited contest
with some physical play and the
team captain rose to the occasion.
Sholdice was the player of the game.
She also set up two early goals to set
the tone.
The finals were a rematch with
Waterloo. This time the Ravens
were ready with a different game
plan. From the opening, they
applied considerable pressure and
kept the puck in the Blyth-Brussels
end for long periods of time. The
defence pairings of Kaitlyn Michie
and Autumn Wightman, as well as,
Mackenzie McGavin and Leanne
Plunkett, showed tremendous bend-
but-not-break resolve.
After a scoreless first period the
team settled down and the second
saw chances to score at both ends.
The end of the third period saw the
team get into penalty trouble. They
managed to kill them off and the
score was still 0-0 at the end of
regulation.
An overtime period of five
minutes was required and was
played three on three. Late in the
period Michie grabbed the loose
puck and passed it ahead to L.
Smith. She was able to get past two
defenders and provided a two-on-
one chance from the red line in on
goal. In front of the goal she
feathered a nice pass to the middle
of the ice where Sholdice made no
mistake by blasting the puck into the
top of the net.
The final score was 1-0. It was a
great team effort and Shiell played
solid again with her second shutout
of the tournament.
The player of the game was
Sholdice.
Celebration time
The Blyth-Brussels Atom girl snuck one by the goalie, then

The Brussels Atom Local League
faced Goderich during the
Christmas break.
The puck was back and forth
between the players until the middle
of the first period when Kailey
Wheeler scored with a pass from
Dalen Martin to take a 1-0 lead.
It took Goderich five minutes to
tie it.
The second period saw Goderich
take the lead, then Brussels tied it
with an unassisted goal by Martin.
Two minutes later, Christopher Van
Veen scored, assisted by Seth Nichol
and Bennett Newell.
Goderich came out ready in the
third and quickly tied it up. The play
continued back and forth with each
team vying for another goal. With
just 49 seconds left on the clock
Goderich scored to take the lead
then ten seconds later, scored again.
Brussels lost a hard-fought battle
5-3. Goalie Konrad McArter made
several great saves.
