I was born to be overweight!" In one forin or another, this statement has been echoed countless times through doctors' °dices in Canada, spoken by the majority of overweight people who can't face the thought of knuckling down to a serious attempt at sensible eating and losing weight. There are a few variations on the theme; some people like to com- plain "1'm overweight because I have trouble with my glands," while others say "I have such a metabolism that I just can't burn up all the food I cot. It just turns into fat." But I feel most of these people have talked themselves into the "perfect alibi". Because no matter how they try, they can't lose weight because as they say: they inherited their fatness, and every- one knows you can't change heredity. How good is the alibi? According to medical experts it's not good enough. These experts say that heredity does have something to do with being overweight but they add that for most overweight people the dinner table is the culprit and the heredity alibi can't overbalance the evidence of the heaping dinner plates, Obesity experts believe that it's largely family living patterns that produce generation after generation of overweight children and adults, These experts also believe the right way to diet is to change basic eating habits, take weight ow and keep it all • and till sensibly. in addition if it is important for an obese adult to watch his or her eating habits, it is also important to keep an extremely careful eye on the way his children eat, Teachina a child the right eating habits in the first years of life may spare him a lifetime struggle against overweight -- or at least make the struggle somewhat easier, Keeping at child slim in a family of overweight adults may mit be easy but it is the best way to end the family tradition of fat. Over- feeding is the best way to prolong the tradition. All in all doctors keep coming back to the stune old theme; inheritance., ,t;lands, inetabolkm and all the other excuses are needed only because people cot too much. This is the reason for their weight problems in all but a few exceptional cases. The real cure lies in eating the right kind of food. 14.
