government during 1972-73, an increase of
about $3,000 from the previous winter.
Plans include hiring of additional
clerical staff, workers to assist technical
staff in the preparation of flood-plain map.
ping, surveys and informational programs,
and laborers for the proposed head office
expansion and renovations as well as in
conservation area programs. About 20 per-
sons are expected to be hired. if the
request is approved.
Among projects approved by the
authority Monday was the $15,000 cost-
benefit study for flood prevention and
erosion control at Port Franks, one of the
body's largest headaches during the past
two years.
A report by a Toronto engineering firm
earlier this year recommended construction
of two jetties projecting into Lake Huron
at the mouth of the Ausable River as well
as channel work to keep the, river mouth
open all year and alleviate flooding of
nearby cottages during spring thaws.
The cost, estimated' at more than $1
million which was to have been shared by
the province, authority and Bosanquet
Township, caused the township to seek
federal assistance, resulting in the request
for the additional report by the federal
government.,
The report will be conducted by
Professor Donald Clough of the University
of Waterloo.
The authority also approved, an
estimated $3,200 expenditure in acquiring
about 100 acres in Hay Township, known
as the Campbell property, as part of its
plan to fill in gaps in its reforested proper-
ties as waterholding areas.
More than $20,000 including legal and
other costs will be spent on purchasing bet-
ween 150 and 170 acres of land on the
Bayfield River in Tuckersmith Township
near Clinton as part of the authority's
valleyland acquisition program.
Another 12-acre purchase with access
from Highway 4 is in the process of being
closed, said John Stephen of Blanshard
Township, chairman of the authority's
land acquisition advisory committee.
The purchases will eventually form a
new conservation area in the Clinton-
Tuckersmith area, providing about 1 1 /4
miles of valleyland park.
The authority attempted to buy a 119-
acre parcel of land south of Bayfield bet-
ween Lake Huron and Highway 21 during
a provincial land auction, but was outbid.
With pressure by the authority, the
province decided to acquire the property
and negotiations are continuing on an
eventual transfer to the authority for
development anf management,
