purpose import store, says The
Financial Post, Going under
such names as Cargo Canada,
Import Bazaar, Trident Im-
ports and. Oceanic Cost Plus,
the stores sell low-cost items
made by cottage industry craft-
smen all over the world. The
average item sells for less than
$1, the average transaction is
just more than $4. But at
Christmas, sales can go up to
$30 per customer. Since the
stores are filled with things no
one really needs--such as
Tibetan oil of elephant musk
and Mexican dried blowfish--
the gift business is vital to their
existence, says Ellen Roseman
in The Post, "Actually,
everyone is into the importing
business in some way or
other," says Rick Bakkle,
general manager of Cargo
Canada, the largest chain with
12 stores across Canada, "but
no one puts it together in one
place the way we do."

A LIQUEUR A DAY-- It
may keep. the doctor away, says
Robert Cointreau in the
December issue of Financial
Post Magazine. Liqueurs were
originally developed by monks
of the 14th century to alleviate
ailments that plagued their
people. And the post-prandial
sips are still very good for your
digestion.
