Huronview (Part 2 )
Home away from home
for these senior citizens
Life is like a river erupting from a tiny spring, and
gently turning, twisting its way down to the peaceful
lake below.
If the river is jammed or stilled on Its journey, the
water becomes stagnant and polluted. So it is with the
human mind. if the movement of ideas and reasons for
accomplishing, cease to exist, the mind becomes
stagnant and useless.
Thus, one of the main problems of a home such as
Huronview, is to prevent idleness on the part of its
residents, and to keep them both active and interested/
This is the job of the Recreation Supervisor, Bob
Taylor. His job is both a challenging one and a rewar-
ding one.
The challenge is to devise and co-ordinate activities
that will interest and include the participation of the
greatest number of residents. The reward? Well, how
can you possibly begin to describe that warm inner
feeling of self-fulfillment when you see those aged,
.time worn faces light up with the happiness that
comes with sharing the good times and company of
others.
The everyday activities immediately available at the
home take place in the woodworking shop for the men
and the crafts room for both the men and women. In
the crafts room, they make such things as pillow
cases, quilts,• foot stools, dolls, stuffed animals, knitted
products and leather products.
The "adjuvant" ward is perhaps the most demanding
ward of all, It is under the supervision of Irene Wild. It
is her job to try and determine her patients' potential
development either physically or mentally and
somehow, through trust and determination, realize that
potential. in this section, the residents do exercises
and simple crafts which involve knitting and sewing.
Some of the regular activities which most of the
residents take part in include a musical get-together
on Monday afternoons.
On Tuesday afternoon, Mrs. Shirley Prouty conducts
a Bible Study. Afterwards, there is a sing-song for the
residents and some staff.
Thursday evening is the social event of the week, as
it is family night. There is an outside organization en-
tertaining on this night. The Recreation Supervisor,
organizes this.
On the third Wednesday of every month the home
auxiliary • of the Huron County. Women's Institute
organize a birthday party for all the residents having a
desk, a reading light and closet for each individual, A highly
trained staff is close at hand. (staff photo)
On the fourth Sunday of every month the Clinton
Christian Reform Church people put on a programme.
The residents take part in and enjoy the regular Sun-
day morning service at 9;30 by Rev. George McWhin-
nie.

A Huronview resident, Mrs. Alma Davis of Goderich, knits in
one of the modern, clean, double rooms at Huronview. The
rooms contain all the comforts of home including a dresser, a
birthday during that month. They also donate presents.
On Friday afternoon there is a bingo conducted by
the staff, but thoroughly enjoyed by all.
Twice a month, on Sunday evening, the Christian
Women's Club of South Huron put on a song service.
The small but comfortable chapel at Huronview sees frequent use as residents of all
denominations worship in the beautiful setting both on Sundays and throughout the week.
The modern surroundings of the home lend a sense of belonging and comradeship rather
than a feeling of confinement. (staff photo)
Community involvement is an everyday part of the scene at Huronview as these residents
provide an afternoon of music and dancing at the home. Norman Speir, right, Blyth plays the
fiddle while Mrs. Mary Taylor, Blyth plays the mouth organ. Mrs. Marie Flynn who is playing
the piano, is a helper who comes in frequently to entertain residents. (staff photo)
