Thanksgiving weekend as I
came out of the operations
building at the Saugeen River
Fishway I took a quick glance
down stream. It appeared as if
overnight someone had con-
structed a picket fence down
both sides of the main channel
in the river. A closer look
revealed that the pickets were
rainbow fishermen and I coun-

This was how Fisheries
Management Officer Fred Mar-
shall described the fall fishing
for rainbow trout in the Saugeen
River at Southampton. A fur-
ther report on the fishing that
Saturday showed,in the first two
miles of the river, from its
mouth to the fishway dam, there
were an estimated 650 anglers.
In addition to these fishermen
there were approximately 50
boats offshore of the river
mouth.
The studies being carried out
at the Saugeen fishway this year
indicated that the 1972 fall
season for rainbow trout would
be good to excellent. So far the
angling has been good at
Southampton and also at other
locations along the Lake Huron
shore, such as Kincardine, Port

Elgin and Sauble. Reports are
that some anglers have taken
their limit of five fish in only a
few hours of angling. Others
have not been that fortunate but
they sure are enjoying the sport
fishing.
Last fall approximately 3500
trout and salmon passed
through the fishway on their
way up the Saugeen River.
Examination of these fish for
lamprey scars is providing
knowledge of the lamprey
population and the ability of the
trout and salmon to recover
from lamprey attack. Other in-
teresting facts pertinent to the
Lake Huron fishery are being
uncovered. For example, the
rainbow trout does not seek its
mother river for spawning in all
instances, Future studies are to
include an investigation of the
trout and salmon reproduction
in the Saugeen as they descend
the river.
