Londesb on) W.I. celebrates 75th anniversary of Institute

The Berean Unit held its
meeting on Tuesday; October 10
in the Church hall, The meeting
opened with prayer followed by
a reading, "Grateful Heart" by
president, Mrs. Ena Howatt and
a hymn, A psalm was read' by
Mrs Harry Durnin and the
meditation and prayer were
read by Mrs, Howatt. , The
treasurer's report and minutes
of the last meeting were given
and thank you notes from Mrs.
Mabel Scott and the family of
Mr. Robert Watson were read.
Mrs, Whyte reminded mem-
bers of the Burns UCW
Thankoffering and Bazaar on
October 25 in Londesboro Hall.
The supply committee is
receiving articles for the bale
and any knitting for the mitten
tree would be appreciated.
Collection and birthday pennies
were received. Roll call was an-
swered by .13 members.
The Rev, S. McDonald will be
in charge of November meeting.
The nominating committee is
Mrs. Joe Shaddick and Mrs.
Laura Lyon,
A poem "Thanksgiving
Prayer" was read by Mrs.
Howatt and the Lord's Prayer
was repeated in unison,
The study period was taken
by Mrs. Lloyd Pipe and Mrs,
Bert Brunsdon. A reading, "Life
is Like a Garden" was given by
Mrs. Pipe and the study of
Chad, in the Sahara Desert.
There is found the hottest tem-
perature in the world 170
degrees in the sun and 130 in
the shade. The study on
Ethiopia was the history of the
Danakil Nomads of Ethiopia's
wasteland. Mrs. Brunsdon read
a hymn and the meeting closed
with another hymn. Lunch was
served by Mrs. Gourley and
Mrs. Harvey Flunking.
The Women's Institute on
Wednesday, October 11 held a
supper meeting celebrating the
75th Anniversary of the In-
stitute with all past members in-
vited.
The meeting opened with the
W.I. Grace and toast to the
Queen, followed by God Save
the Queen, An anniversary cake
made by Mrs. Don Buchanan
and decorated by Mrs. Dave An-
derson was cut by the first
president, Mrs, Myrtle Fairser-
vice. A sing-song was enjoyed
with Mrs. Tom Allen at the
piano.
President Mrs. Eric Anderson
welcomed all past and present
members and opened the
meeting with the Mary Stewart
Collect. Mrs. Reg. Lawson gave
a history of the W.I., relating
the story of Adelaide Hoodless.
Seated at the head table were
the past presidents and
secretaries since May 1950 when
the Institute was reorganized af-
ter being disbanded for Red
Cross. Past presidents were:
Mrs. Myrtle Fairservice, 1950-
52; Mrs. Stanley Lyon, 1952-58
(deceased); Mrs. E. Wood, 1958-
60; Mrs. Tom Allen, 1960-62;
Mrs, Dave Anderson, 1962-64;
Mrs. Glen Carter, 1964.66; Mrs,
Jim Howatt, 1966-68; Mrs,
Elgin Josling, 1968.70; Mrs.
Gladys Gourley, 1970-72; Mrs.
Eric Anderson, present
president. Past secretaries were;
Mrs. Dave Anderson, Mrs. Ar-
thur Clark, Mrs, Fangrad; Mrs,
Throop (deceased); Mrs. L,
Pipe, Mrs. Len Shobbrook, Mrs,
Cliff Adams, Mrs. Gordon
Howatt, Mrs, G. Gourley, Mrs,
Robinson and present secretary,
Mrs. Taylor. Pictures were
taken by Mrs. L. Pipe for
Tweedsmuir Book. A card was
signed by all to be sent to Mrs. "

West Huron Women's Institute
and a member of St. Helen's In-
stitute. She spoke of the Mary
Stewart Collect and told of the
life history of Mary Stewart.
Mrs. Gourley thanked her and
presented her with a gift.
Mrs. Margaret Taylor will be
the delegate to the area conven-
tion to be held at Lambeth on
October 20 and 27,
Mrs. Gourley asked all
members to provide baking for
the bake sale for the Bazaar
and Bake Sale to be held at
Huronview on November 8.
Leaders for the leader-
training school on Ontario
Fruits' to be held in Wesley-
Willis Church, Clinton on Oc-
tober 24 and 25 are Mrs. Tom
Duizer and Mrs. Elma Jewitt.
A gift was presented to the
first president, Mrs. Myrtle
Fairservice. The birthday
nearest February 19, the date of
the first WI meeting was Mrs.
Clare 'Vincent Sr. Roll call was
answered by the number of
pieces of pie eaten for supper.
Collection was received and
bills and accounts were passed
for payment,
The following program was
enjoyed: Londesboro Trio - Mrs.
Tom Allen, Mrs. Allen Shad-
dick, Mrs. Clare Vincent, accom-
panied by Mrs. Harry Lear;
readings by Mrs. Donald
Sprung, "I Want a Divorce"
and "Men Have Their Objec-
tions Too"; a demonstration by
Mrs. Don Buchanan, "Using
Paper to Save Time"; song by
trio; reading by Mrs. Sprung,
"Mr. Levinski Goes to the Wed-
ding". Mrs, Eric Anderson in-
troduced Mrs. Bennett of
Seaforth who showed .and
demonstrated her crafts. She
was thanked and presented with
a gift by Mrs. Elma Jewitt.
Lucky cup winner was Mrs. Ena
Howatt. Oldest member present
was Mrs. Annie Leitch. The
president thanked all who had
helped in any way for the suc-
cess of the evening. The meeting
closed with singing "Good Night
Ladies".
UNITED CHURCH
At the United Church Sunday
morning, greeters were Lorne
flunking and Jack Lee. Ushers
were Murray Hunking and

Rev. McDonald left to take an-
niversary 'services at Winthrop
Church. Harry Lear capably
filled in for Rev. McDonald.
The choir's anthem was "Lord I
Want To be Ready".
On Friday evening, Rev.
McDonald entertained at a
fellowship night,- the following
elders and their districts, Jack
Lee, Harry Snell, Don
Buchanan, Bert Shobbrook,
Emmerson Hesk and Henry
Hunking. Rev. McDonald
welcomed everyone. Some
games were played with
everyone participating. Mr. and
Mrs. Murray Lyon showed
Seventy-four years ago,
Canada became the first. country
in the world to handle reading
material for the blind post free.
Each monthe the Library of The
Canadian National Institute for
the Blind circulates over 2,000
braille volumes and 12,000
taped talking books. Brailled,
taped and large print books are
available to the 27,000
registered blind in Canada, in-
cluding texts for the 275
students studying beyond the
high school level.

In 1967, when The Canadian
National Institute for the Blind
Amateur Radio Club was for-
med, there were 42 blind licen-
sed ham operators, Today there
are 150. Special classes are held
each year for the blind in CNIB
offices in co-operation with the
more than 100 amateur radio
clubs in Canada. Sighted hams
art as instructors and sponsors
who assemble, modify and in-
stall equipment in the homes of
blind hams who pass their
government tests.

The second meeting of Lon-
desboro 1 4-1-I was held on Mon-
day, October 2 at Londesboro
Hall. The meeting opened with
the 4a Pledge and roll call was
answered by 14 members. The
name Merry Meatballs was
chosen. The next meeting will be
October 16 at 7;30 in Lon-
desboro Hall. The Canada Food
Guide was discussed and Mrs.
Harry Snell handed out the
sheets,

AT KIPPEN
Rev. Cecil Wittich of Blyth
preached the sermon "Foun-
dations of our Faith" from the
parable of the Prodigal Son at
the Anniversary services of St.
Andrew's Church, Kippen. on
October 14. Inspiring musical
numbers were provided by the
Huronia Men's Choir under the
able leadership of Mrs. McCaf-
frey of Exeter who also con-
tributed a beautiful solo part.
4-H CLUB
Kippen I 4-H Club "The
Slicking Cooks" held their fifth
meeting at the home of Mrs.
Banks and children of London
and Murray Bolton of Waterloo.
Miss Ann Fairservice, Stratford
and Mrs. Dorothy Bamdey of
Oshawa spent Thanksgiving
weekend with Mrs. Myrtle Fair-
service,
Rev. S. McDonald was a
Thanksgiving Sunday dinner
guest of .Mr. and Mrs. Bob
Elliott, Pine Lake.
Two carloads of UCW mem-
bers attended Huron Centre
Regional UCW convention in
. Brucefield on Thursday, Oc-
tober 12. Louise Lovett and
Audrey Peel, accompanied by
Mrs. Harry Lear supplied the
musical number. The guest
speaker was Dr. Eva Moses of
India.
Sorry to report Mrs. Elgin
Josling is a patient in Clinton
Hospital since Thursday.
Mrs. Jessie Jones attended the
funeral on Monday of her
Ferris. The business of the
meeting was conducted by
Karen Ferris. Plans were made
for the buffet supper to which
the mothers are to be invited.
School lunches were discussed
and Jill McLellan demonstrated
sandwich making. A variety
lunch was served at the com-
grand-nephew, Neil Campbell
Bitievale who died on Friday it
Wingham Hospital following
car accident on Thanksgivin
Day.
