Bonds through this plan. This wide popularity bears out the suggestion that Canadians in all walks of life believe in a planned savings program. They have found that one safe and sure way to reach their financial goals is through the purchase of Canada Savings Bonds on the Payroll Savings Plan where they work. This plan has proven to be an easy and painless way to save money by having a few dollars deducted from weekly earnings and watching it grow into a lump sum that materializes in the form of a paid-up Canada Savings Bond. For less than 30 cents a day ail employee can buy a $100 bond. It is expected that this year the demand for bonds by employees in many factories, offices and other establishments will exceed last year's record. In addition to adding a major degree of stability to their own economic program, Canadian employees will be sharing in Canada's continuing growth and development by providing an important segment in the Federal Government's debt management program, This will mark the 27th an- niversary of CSB, and during the period 1946-1971 inclusive, nearly $5.5 billion worth of the bonds have been purchased through payroll savings plans. Last year, for example, more than 675,000 employees of over 5,000 establishments bought a record $328 million worth of Canada Savings Bonds through the Payroll Savings Plan. A growing number of in- dustries and establishments have instituted this plan for their employees as an easy and convenient way for them to reach a savings target and in- vest in a safe and profitable security. The employee simply places an order with his employer for the amount of Canada Savings Bonds he wishes to purchase. Each payday, a specific amount of money is deducted from his wages or salary to pay for the bonds. These payments are usually spread over a 12-month period. An attractive feature of Canada Savings Bonds is that they can be cashed at any time by the holder for their full face value plus earned interest. The new series, provides an annual average yield of 7.30 per cent if held to maturity in 12 Years. The annual rate interest is 5.5 per cent fer the first year; 7 per cent for the second year; 7.50 per cent for each of the next four years and 7.75 per cent for -each of the final six years, A compound interest feature is again incorporated providing for 3 extra interest certificates during the 12 year life of the bond. The purchaser of a $100 bond will receive $233.25 when it matures, November 1, 1984, if he holds all interest coupons and compound interest coupons and compound interest cer- tificates uncashed until then. If an investor holds his $100 bond, and its first seven regular coupons uncashed until Novem- ber 1, 1979 a first compound in- terest certificate becomes payable on that date for $11.75. Similarly, if the $100 bond and the five remaining coupons are held uncashed until November 1, 1984, a second compound in- terest certificate becomes payable for $6.00, If he holds his bond until maturity without cashing any of the regular an- nual interest coupons or com- pound interest certificates, a final compound interest cer- tificate also becomes payable for $26.50. This brings the total proceeds at maturity of a $100 bond to $233.25. During the 1971 CSB cam- paign, more than 232,000 ern-, ployees in establishments in On- tario alone purchased a record total of more than $117.5 million worth of Canada Savings Bonds. Organic foods no better Organic gardening does not produce better quality food, says Dr. Matt John, a specialist in soil chemistry and soil fertility at the Agriculture Canada Research Station in Agassiz, B.C. "Contrary to claims by health food advocates, it has been proven that it is the chemical element, not the method of fer- tilizing plants - be it organic or chemical - that counts," says Dr. John. Growing • food . without chemical fertilizer, and marketing it with minimum processing, has received support from those who claim foods grown from chemical fertilizers are harmful, less nutritious and tasteless. The brunt of the argument seems to be that plants which assimilate organic nutrients from manure rather than chemical fertilizers are healthier because manure is "natural". "But compost or manure has to be decayed and converted to inorganic nutrients, similar in composition to chemical fer- tilizer forms, before the nutrients can be used by the plants," says Dr. John. "Plants manufacture food only from raw chemicals, and use about 15 elements found to be essential for their growth, plus a few other elements essen- tial for animal growth, but all of them in inorganic forms," he says. Plants grown experimentally on sand or water culture, to which only chemical nutrients have been added, are similar in chemical composition, taste, and food value to those grown in soil where barnyard manure is ad- ded, says Dr, John. Chemical fertilizers have also been accused of incidences of "nitrogen poisoning", but these rare problems could also result from applications of organic manure. "It is the chemical content, not use of either manure or chemical fertilizer, that makes the difference," says Dr. John, alCitet!i. SALES & SERVICE i"We Service What We Sell" 26/ VICTORIA Sr. HWY. COFFEE MATE Dr, Frank Mills, the Medical Officer of Health for the County of Huron and Director of the Huron County Health Unit, today informed the News, Record that the Health Unit will actively participate in the night school program of the Huron County Board of Education in two areas. The first, "Preparation for Parenthood" and the second, "Family Living" seminars, Dr. Mills stated that the "Preparation for Parenthood" classes scheduled for the night school timetable will replace the previous so-called prenatal classes which were conducted throughout the county. "Preparation for Parenthood" classes will be conducted in each of the county's secondary schools where night courses are available and will be taught by the public health nurse for that area with the assistance of various resource personnel. The presentation of this series of classes in seminar-type discussion groups, in conjunc- tion with the Board of Education night school courses, allows for better timing of the course for the expectant mother and father, in a centralized location and integrated with the other community night 1,1!. 45' 816. bag 29` COUGH DROPS FINE FAMILY OF BELEVEDERE CIGARETTES "ger; SIZE 26' x 36" HEAVY DUTY GARBAGE BAGS 41 59` TULIP SOFT MARGARINE 3 4: 1.00 SARA LEE FROZEN ASSORTED FLAVOURS PULL A PARTS CimssoRomi FROZEN PIE SHELLS WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO LIMIT QUANTITIES BONUS DISCOUNTS ROBIN HOOD All Purpose FLOUR 718 bag 69c WHITE SWAN ASSORTED COLOURS BATHROOM TISSUE 4 roll pkg. 55c 4 4: 88` .
