PROTECT .YOURSELF
AND YOUR TRAILER
Consumers' Association of
Canada advises only Your
agent knows for sure if your
trailer is adequately insured,
Ask him! In some provinces,
liability coverage but not
collision insurance may be in-
chided in the policy insuring
your car. An additional
premium and rider on your
policy may be required in order
to provide adequate insurance
protection, The serial number of
your trailer should be attached
to your automobile policy. CAC
headquarters are at 100
Gloucester Street, Ottawa, On-
tario.
SCHOOL BUS SAFETY
Consumers' Association of
Canada reports that in Ontario
alone, in the period from Sep-
tember 1963 to June 1970, 14
children were killed and 581
seriously injured when the bus
carrying them was involved in a
collision. School buses are
exempt from many sections of
the Canada Motor Vehicle
Safety Act including those stan-
dards covering interior-occupant
protection. CAC headquarters
are at 100 Gloucester Street, Ot-
tawa, Ontario.
HOUSEHOLD SAFETY
Because household synthetic
detergents for laundry, wall and
floor washing are used in every
home, Consumers' Association
of Canada requests the Depart-
ment of Consumer .and Cor-
porate Affairs to have these
products listed under the Hazar-
dous Products Act and therefore
subject to its labelling
requirements. CAC headquar-
tern are at 100 Gloucester
.Street, Ottawa, Ontario.
DES GROWTH PROMOTANT
Consumers' Association of
Canada warns that
diethylstilbestrol IDES), a syn-
thetic female hormone fed to
cattle and sheep as a growth
enhancer, has produced cancer
in laboratory animals. CAC has
requested that the Health
Protection Branch of the Depar-
tment of National Health and
Welfare ban the use of DES in
the raising of meat animals.
CAC headquarters are at 100
Gloucester Street, Ottawa, On-
tario.

THE HUNGER SYNDROME
When you say you're starving, famished, ravenous, how do you
really feel?
Is there a gnawing, churning, rumbling sensation in your stomach
or arc you cued to hunger because the clock says noon and every-
one is going out to lunch?
What I am saying is that you may be eating too much -you may
possibly be consuming food not because you're truly hungry but
because of habit, because food smells good and you've just passed
a pastry shop and seen the specialty of the house, chocolate cake.
According to your body you may be getting hunger pangs'which are •
really muscle spasms caused by your stomach contracting on its
own emptiness. Doctors have proven that obese and normal weight
people are talking about two different experiences when they talk
about "hunger".
We all experience hunger pangs or signals, and we are all subject
to the external signals, smell, taste and sight of food. But the obese
person tends to 'receive different hunger signals than normal weight
people. Overweight people will be unduly influenced by these signals,
so much so that they tend to eat between meals as well as at regular
meal times because they can't resist the sensory signals as well as
..the hunger signals..-. •
If you know your weakness is chocolate ,donuts, you'd be foolish
.-to have them in tithouse. There are other lei§' fattening goodies a
weight watcher can eat.
To be a successful dieter one must learn to exercise willpower and
one must also be smart enough to avoid the external stimuli. Here
are some of the ways to avoid the temptations brought on by the
wrong signals.
- Only cat when your stomach says its hungry. You'll have to
listen to it closely.
- When you do listen to your body's signals, be able to read them
correctly. It may not be saying its hungry but rather, it's tired, in
need of fresh air. Sleep, don't eat, Take a walk instead of a cookie.
- If you eat in a restaurant or luncheonette, don't sit near the
pastry tray or where the pies are displayed on the counter.
A dieter must be ruthless with himself. Remember boredom is the
biggest cause of overweight, If your mind and body is signalling
boredom, admit it and do something about it, except eat.
Then when you have reached your goal weight, and find yourself
buying a suit or dress two sizes smaller, "that" is the only kind of
- external stimulus a weight watcher should always acknowledge.
Your questions are invited.
