Goderich died in hospital shortly after he was taken from this twisted wreck. The car was
involved in a two car collision south of Goderich Saturday night. The grinding crash also sent
five other persons to hospital suffering injuries.—staff photo
Teenager killed on Highway 21
Four new faces joined the teaching staff of Mullett Central School at Londesboro when
classes began there last week. Sheila Wittie (left) will teach grade one and two. Don Tremeer
will teach grade 8 and is vice-principal at the school. Angus MacLennan is the new principal
at the school and John Talbot will teach grade four.

Leonard Eric Learnen, 16, of
32 Bennett Street West in
Goderich died late Saturday
night at the Alexandra Marine
and General Hospital shortly
after he was involved in a
grinding two car crash. He had
been the driver of a car struck
broadside by a second vehicle on
Highway 21 about four miles
south of Goderich.

Provincial Police Learnen was
apparently attempting to make
'a U turn on the highWay when
his vehicle was rammed by a
southbound car driven by
Robert Santavy, 24, of 85
Devine Street in Sarnia.
Mr. Santavy, 24, as well as
passengers in the Learnen car,
Debbie Westlake 15, Janice
Westlake 20, of R.R. 4 Goderich,
Steven Rieck, 17, of 257
Catherine Street Goderich and
Cheryl Elliott, 16 of 124
Victoria Street, Goderich, were
rushed by ambUlance to
Goderich hospital as well.
Santavy and the Westlake
girls were listed in good
condition at hospital but Steven
Rieck and Cheryl Elliott were
transferred to Victoria Hospital
in London. Rieck is in serious
condition with a broken leg and
internal injuries 'and Miss
Elliott in fair condition with a
fractured pelvis.
A fifth passenger in the
Learnen car, Bruce Currie, 16 of
125 Indian Road Kitchener
escaped the crash unhurt, Mr.
Santavy was alone in his car.
The car Learnen was driving
was owned by William
Westlake of R.R. 4 Goderich.
Leonard Learnen was the son
of Mr, and Mrs. John Walter
Leamen. He is survived - by his.
parents, a sister Rose of London,
brothers Walter of Kingston and
Gordon at home as well as a
grandmother Mrs. Rose Willis
of Goderich.
Funeral services were
conducted by Rev. G.L. Royal
from the Stiles Funeral Home
Tuesday . afternoon with
interment at Maitland
Cemetery.
UCW meet
The fall meeting of Brucefield
UCW was held in the church
parlour on Tuesday, September
5 with 15 ladies present. Mrs. E.
Stoll and Mr's. Haugh were in
charge of the devotions. Mrs. G.
Henderson played the piano.
Mrs. Stoll gave the call to
worship with the theme '-
Wisdom" and read the
Scripture lesson.
Mrs. Haugh read a poem "If
'we had time" and the offering
was received and dedicated.
Mrs. Haugh read a paper on
"The Common People", written
by Rev, YOung,'"formerly, of
Hensail:' It ShoWe'4 rriny
famous people would never have
accomplished what they did
only for the backing of the
common people like Andrew.
Mrs. Haugh closed with
prayer and Mrs. S. Wilson took
the chair for business.
She welcomed the ladies to
the first general meeting in the
new church and expressed
thanks to all who had ,taken
part in the activities of the past
three months, including visitors'
day, church opening and picnic.
The roll call and minutes of
the last meeting were read and
the treasurer reported $3305.61
on hand.
