Robert McKinley, the Progressive
Conservative member for Huron in the
Present sitting al, Ottawa, announced August
27 that he would seek the nomination of his
party for the forthcoming olec:tion.
Mr, McKinley is deputy whip of the
federal caucus and chairman of the party's
agricultural committee and agriculture
critic, indications to _date are that he will
obtain that nomination although the party
has announced no date for their nomination
meeting as yet,.
Upon announcing his intentions to run
Mr. McKinley predicted a Conservative
victory charging that Prime Minister
Trudeau had alienated support across
Canada.
He also noted that Mr, Trudeau's efforts
to make Canada a completely socialistic
state were extinguishing the NDP, "By
taking over NDP policies in Parliament," he
said "Mr, Trudeau has split the NDP
forcing one half toward radical wings and
the rest to the Conservative party,"
As long ago as this spring the Huron
Liberals held their nomination meeting in
preparation for the then unannounced fall
election, Life long Huron County resident
Charles Thomas, reeve of Grey, was named
the official candidate.
At the time of his nomination Mr.
Thomas told a gathering of 500 Huron
Liberals that this riding could benefit
greatly from a member sitting on the
government side of the house.
"I am aware of the local issues and the
local problems," he said, "and I recognize
the difficulties in communicating these
needs to Ottawa through the Opposition."
Noting improvements he would strive for

of the county — the Kitchener WateRiq
area — directly to the Seaway.
The 44 year old candidate is a farmer
working a 500 acre farm in Grey Township,
He went to school in Brussels before joining
his father in the -construction business until
1952. Prom 1951 to 1957 he was a jet pilot
in the R,C,A.P.
Thomas is 11 member of the Brussels
United Church. and the Brussels Legion, He
is past president of the Brussels Lions Club
and a past president of the Huron
Federation of Agriculture, He is a former
member of the Agricultural Advisory Board
of Conestoga College.
He has been involved in local politics for
several years and reeve of Grey for four
years, On Huron County Council he serves
on the Social Services Committee,
Mr. Thomas is also a, past chairman of
the County Planning Board and was on the
hoard during the time that Huron gained
the distinction of being the first county in
Ontario to complete an official plan.
As noted earlier Huron is now represented
by Conservative member Robert McKinley,
in his second term. McKinley was elected in
1968 more than 3,600 votes ahead of his
nearest opponent.
Ed Bain announced through the
Kitchener Waterloo Record earlier this
week that he will also seek election in
Huron as. an independent socialist
candidate, Mr. Bain confirmed the
announcement on Tuesday and said that he
would be releasing a prepared statement
later in the week.
In 1968 Liberal Maitland Edgar received
10,960 votes behind McKinley who grossed
a total of 1.4,652. NDP candidate Shirley
Weary obtained 1,212,
