FLAVOUR MAKES THE DIFFERENCE
A flavouring guide, is a prime requisite for anyone who plans to
lose weight as flavour rates in importance only second to calories
and nutrition.
As you know, a meal virtually robbed of flavoursome fats, oils
butters, sugars, creams, sauces and gravies might be indeed boring
and could arouse one into eating foods not on their meal plan.
But when the sense of smell is met with aromatic enchantment, when
the eye lights on a colourfully garnished platter, when taste buds are
satisfied to their fullest a weight watcher's way of eating can
become a joy to the soul as well as to the stomach.
To improve the lot of the dieter, there is a tantalizing array of herbs,
spices and other flavour-makers most of them without calories
but filled with wonderful taste sensations.
Often your dinner requires only a pinch or a dash of that extra
"something" to transform a bland dish into a veritable experience,
Stock your shell' with flavour-makers to have on hand at a moment's
notice to experiment with. Most of them can be found at your local
supermarket -- but also it's worth a trip to your favourite gourmet
shop to seek out some of the more exotic spices and herbs.
Grow fresh herbs in your "Kitchen Garden" which can be a window
box. Many good cooks also prefer to grind or grate their own
spices such as nutmeg — and would never think of using pepper
from anything but their own pepper mill. These are the extra little
touches that make everyday cooking a bit more fun,
A few tips to remember when buying spices and dried herbs: Look
for quality and buy in small quantities. Then make sure that they
are in tightly covered jars or containers and stored in a cool place.
When you notice the scent becoming weak this means it's time to
replace the herb or spice. And fresh herbs should be used as soon as
picked from your garden or bought in the supermarket.

to us that a group of armed men

we must pack up everything and

did just that in ten minutes flat,
and were off following the
natives to our mountain shelter.
We spent three rather
uncomfortable days — thirty of

cramped under two poorly built
huts with a bamboo floor and

8 or 10 tribesmen remained to
defend the village, barricaded in
our bamboo house armed with
bows and arrows and one gun.
We felt our stay very
frustrating, as no one could
explain to us what was really
going on and how serious the
matter was. Upon Mr. Minor's
return we were informed that it
had been a false alarm, but we
really appreciated the natives
considering our safety as their
responsibility.

The Pioneer Park Association held its
annual meeting last Saturday morning with
29 people present,
At last year's meeting it had been
suggested that Dr. Kalbfleisch, president,
investigate the cost of an engraving to be
placed on the large rock in the Park. He
found that such an engraving would be too
expensive and the meeting voted to abandon
that plan. It was then suggested that an
inexpensive plaque be placed near the rock.
Plans for this will be further considered.
A report was given on the Hayfield
Rummage Sale. Mrs. Melissa Kurtz and
Mrs. Lola Cook, conveners of the Sale,
announced that the Sale netted close to
$800.00
Mrs. Doris Hunter suggested that the
Association look into the possibility of
purchasing, with the help of other local
groups, the old Town Hall. Investigations
against the caterpillars and
sucking insects as are Sevin,
Methoxychlor, and malathion
and have no safety or biological
advantages. Follow the label

FOLLOW STRICT SAFETY
PRECAUTIONS WHEN
USING NICOTINE SULFATE.
It is a highly toxic chemical.
The home gardener must
make careful applications at
frequent intervals for best
results, Garden stores stock
these chemicals and other
insecticides, fungicides and
herbicides for use in the home
garden. Preparations are also
available for specific problems.
When used as recommended, the
materials will assure quality
vegetables and maintain flowers
in good condition.

Pioneer Park holds
annual meeting
Home gardeners take pride in
their vegetable or flower garden
and in the ornamentals and
shrubbery around the home. At
this time of year a variety of
chewing and sucking insectsmay
injure or deform many garden
plants. Effective and safe
insecticides are available to
control these pests, says
Professor F.L. McEwen,
Department of Environmental
Biology, University of Guelph,
Small, greenish sucking
insects called aphids may be
found on the undersides of
leaves or in clusters at stem
nodes, To control them and
other sucking insects, use a
spray of 50 % malathion
emulsion at 2 teaspoons per
gallon of water. There are a few
plants, particularly in the
ornamentals, that are sensitive
to malathion and can be
injured. READ THE LABEL
before applying. Because aphids
multiply rapidly, chemical
control must be applied
regularly.
Cabbageworms, flea beetles
and the Colorado potato beetle
injure cabbage, cauliflower,
potatoes and lettuce by eating
the leaves of the plants. Sevin
(carbaryl) can be used as 50 %
Sevin wettable powder (3
tablespoons per gallon of
water), or as a 5 % dust, An
application of 25 %
Methoxychlor emulsible
concentrate (2 1/2 tablespoons
per gallon) also provides good
control. Both chemicals are
effective but Sevin is more easily
obtained by the home gardener.
If Sevin is used, do not apply
within 3 days of harvest; with
Methoxychlor, do not apply
within .7 days of harvest. READ
THE LABEL BEFORE
TREATING your vegetable
plants.
Insecticides of plant origin,
such as Pyrethrins, Rotenone
and Nicotine Sulfate can also be
used. These are not as effective
Use caution with home insecticides
will be made on that subject.
Mrs. Don Lance proposed the plan that
the Association buy a plot of land in the
Village. This land would be left in its
natural state to hold for the future. The
Board of Directors intends to look into this
possibility,
Since there was much business which
seemed to be inconclusive, it was proposed
that another _meeting of the Association be
held Thanksgiving weekend,
It was voted to send flowers to Mr. Hales
Dresser who is in hospital.
Miss Jessie Metcalf announced new
directors for the Association are Mrs. Olwen
Chapman and Mrs. Gwen Pemberton.
The Association was reminded that this
yeti,' is its twnety-fifth anniversary, and the
birthday events, such as the paint-in, dance-
band, leambton Youth Theatre production,
Treasure Hunt, and Kites and Stilts
contests were well accepted.
