Rattlesnake bites,
Action to take
WHERE TO GET HELP
The Ministry of Health for
Ontario recommends the
following for treatment of
rattlesnake bite victims.
Immediately apply a tourniquet
just above the bite, tight enough
to compress soft tissues, but not
tight enough to stop blood
circulation. The arm or leg
should be kept at rest, to
prevent the venom from
spreading, and the victim should
be taken to the nearest
antivenin depot or hospital.
Conservation officers of the
Ministry of Natural Resources
stationed in Ontario's
Provincial Parks, are trained to
give temporary treatment to
victims of the Massasauga
rattler. The public can purchase
a snake bite kit for $2,31 plus
.35 postage from Cutter
Laboratories, 3079 Universal
Drive, Mississauga, Ontario.
These kits contain a tourniquet,
WOULD RATHER RUN THAN
FIG HT
The experts say that the
Massasauga rattler will not
"chase" a person — it would
rather run than fight. Contrary
to popular belief, the
Massasauga rattler does not
always make the characteristic
rattling sound before striking.
The snake is not confined to
Georgian Bay, Lake Huron, and
the off-shore islands, but can be
found from Windsor to Sudbury.
The Massasauga is not
necessarily confined to land; it
is not uncommon to find one
swimming some distance from
shore.
A final warning, Young
Massasaugas are born live —
theh- venom sacs fully
developed. Due to reflex action,
a Massasauga can inflict a bite
when apparently dead.
Workmen froth the Ministry of Transportation and COMmunication Completed putting up the
new guard rails last week beside the bridge on Highway 4 Just South of Clinton. The Crew,
which works Out Of Stretford, ran into a few problems with large rocks while digging Wes for
the treated supports.

Last year a young American
visitor, vacationing with his
parents on Fritzwilliarn Island
off the eastern tip of Manitoulin
Island, was bitten by a
Massasauga rattler — the only
species of venomous snakes in
Ontario.
What followed was a frantic
35-mile trip by boat to Killarney
Provincial Park on the
mainland, where the boy was
transferred to an Ontario
Provincial Police cruiser for the
65-mile dash to Sudbury
General Hospital. An
ambulance dispatched from the
Sudbury General met the OPP
cruiser, and the boy completed
his trip to the hospital in just
over four hours. At the hospital
he was given antivenin serum
and recovered quickly enough to
be discharged two days later,
Had the boy not received
proper first aid treatment before
being transported to hospital,
his story might not have had
such a happy ending. Ironically,
the long journey to save his life
was not necessary —had his
parents known it, help was
much closer at hand. Both the '
St, Joseph's Hospital in Little
Current, and the Lion's Head
Red Cross Outpost Hospital in
the Bruce Peninsula, carry the
antivenin serum and are
equipped to treat rattlesnake
bites,
On Sunday afternoon, July 30
a Youngblut reunion was held
ik the Auburn Community
Memorial hall when about 100
descendants of the late Werner

gathered for this family
remembrance, The Youngbluts
were married in 1869 at
Sebastopol, Ontario.
The relatives came from
Woodstock, Toronto, Windsor,
St. Thomas, Wingham,
Kincardine, Zurich, Goderich,
Clinton, Seaforth, Brucefield,
Prescott, Manitoba and Auburn,

Although only seven cases of
rattlesnake bites were reported
last year — all seven
successfully treated — the
Ontario Hospital Association is
concerned that visitors and
vacationers in "rattlesnake
country" are often unaware of
where to reach help. Time is of
the essence — it can mean the
difference between life and
death!

Remember, in all cases of
rattlesnake bites, transfer the
