Most people recover quickly
from an insect sting. For a few
people, however, a sting by a
honeybee, bumblebee or wasp
can be as fatal as a snake bite.
Simple precautions will help
ensure that you don't become a
victim, says Professor P. W.
Burke, Environmental Biology
Department, University of
Guelph.
Remember that these stinging
insects will be more prevalent in
picnic areas or around flower
beds. When working in such an
area, use an insect repellent, or
wear protective clothing.
Avoid hairdressings or
perfumes with floral scents.
Wear light colored clothing.
Dark clothing attracts and
irritates these insects.

Community effort seems to be the word out at Vanastra (formerly CFB Clinton) as these residents got
together last week to cut the lawn on the boulevard between Toronto Road and Hal ifax Street. With four
lawnmowers working in unison, it wasn't long ti I l the area was presentable again. (News-Record photo)
ydro strike costly
to area farmers
The strike by Ontario Hydro
workers is costing farmers
thousands of dollars, according
to Ontario Federation of
Agriculture. Some rural areas
have suffered power cuts of up
to 48 hours. Hundreds of
chickens suffocated when
electric fans failed. Dairy cows
stood unranked for hours as
farmers awaited .power.
Ontario Hydro, sole supplier
of electricity in Ontario, is
coming under increasing
criticism from farmers as the
strike continues. Gordon Hill,
President of the OFA, calls the
situation "a disgrace,"
matter of principle,
BY J. CARL HENIINGVVAY .
The weather is always a safe topic so I'll lead off with that. The
weather isn't making hay this last few days but the spring grain and
wheat are looking exceptionally good in our area and the corn is pulling
out of the frost damage nicely. All that is needed for another top crop is
more of the high temperatures that we're getting. (July 12)
Now for some other problems.
The roof on our house needs paint. I want to get it done this year and
I've had roof painters calling regularly but haven't any way to find out
the quality of product used or the reliability of the painter.
I had a painter in this morning that seemed pretty good but---He gave
me a price that seemed reasonable for good material but in order to
justify it started to tell me about the big investment he had in his truck
(less than a good sized tractor) then ended up by stating that he had to
have $25 just to get up on the roof. When I did a little mental arithmetic
the price for the paint was pretty low so the roof still needs paint.
Why does he have to get $25 just to get up on the Roof? Does he have to
get it to have a $5,000 income or is it for a $10, or $15 thousand yearly
income? I wonder what would happen if I were to load up my hogs and
started telling people I had to have $75 for the pigs?
I don't think it would work.
In the first place, the government takes very careful steps to protect
he food buyer but doesn't seem to have any protection regarding
quality of paint.
What happens if the roof painter doesn't get this price that he "has to
have"? He can simply fold up and collect welfare. However, if the
armer is toget welfare he has to somehow have his life-time saving
hat he has put in his farm disappear.
But perhaps I'm not being fair to our painter friend and our
enevolent government that distributes the "goodies". Perhaps we
armers have ourselves to blame. You see, we belong to a strange
reed that takes the Atlantic Charter seriously, particularly the
tatement "There shall be equal opportunity for all" This is the reason
hat an article in a recent "Farm" paper was quite critical of the
askatchewan government suggesting assistance for the farmers to do
heir own livestock processing, This was labelled "unfair
ompetition" against the Packers. We farmers believe in "equal
pportunity for all" so strongly that we don't object to feed companies.

Precaution to prevent insect stings
Always move slowly around
the insects and their nests.
Quick motion and air movement
will excite them.
One thing to remember is that
the insects become less active as
the day becomes darker and
cooler,
If you are stung by an insect
that leaves a noticeable stinger,
do not attempt to pluck it out.
This will only force the
remaining venom into the
system. Instead use an object,
even 'a fingernail, to scrape the
stinger away. "Tame"
honeybees are the only ones that
leave their stinger behind. The
"wild" insects do not. If you do
get stung, an application of
baking soda mixed with water
to form a paste will help to
relieve the pain.
If there are other symptoms,
such as shortness of breath,
choking or marked swelling, go
to a hospital as quickly as
possible. In such cases, a short
period of time can be critical.
Adrenalin may be necessary to

containing isuprel are a new
innovation. When placed under
the tongue, they will effectively
combat the ill effects.
The best policy at all times is'
to go out of your way to avoid
contact with stinging insects.
