BY LISA WILLIAMS
On Tuesday July 11th,
Bayfielders were invited to enjoy
a trip to Australia, A slide show
exhibited in St, Andrews United
Church by Mrs. Ethel Path,
assisted by Mrs. Gwen
Pemberton, colorfully described
a country which most of the
audience probably will never see,
"Captain Cook," said Mrs,
Poth, "one of the greatest
mariners of all time," was
looking for "the great unknown
land" when he found the island of
nearly three million square
miles. The name 'Australia'
means 'Southland'.
Captain Cook's 160 foot ship
scraped on a coral reef, and in
order to lighten the ship, the crew
tossed. cannons overboard. These
were found by divers recently,
after lying underwater nearly 200
years.
Mrs. Pemberton told of her
journey inland to Alice Springs.
Her three sons who are geologists
had told her about Australia's
famous and mysterious
landmark, Ayer's Rock. For 150
miles this six-mile-long mass of
rock can be seen in every
direction,
In the "outback" of central
Australia there is little surplus
hydro. The native children used to
be educated by radios run by
pedals - and the hydro is still
turned-off at night.
Mrs. Poth conducted a tour of
the eastern coast of Australia
from Sydney through Canberra
(pronounced CAN-burra) to
Melbourne, Situated by the
Pacific, these cities are always
being reminded of their ties with
the ocean.
"The Australians love the
water," said Mrs. Poth, and after
a look at the white sand beaches
nestled between the headlands in
Sydney, one can see why. Bridges
and harbours are plentiful. In
The Lawson-Clark reunion was
held' at Benmiller Provincial..
Park on Sunday, July 16,19'72 with
over 80 persons in attendance.
During the afternoon. Jack and
Doreen Medd and Chuck and

Melbourne the ballast from in-
coming ships was used to fashion
iron railings and decorative trim
on buildings. And in Sydney time
new Opera House, still
incomplete, has been designed to
look like white sails on the water.
Spoonbill, iguana, platypus,
koala - and of course, kangaroo:
these are the names of some of
-Australia's wildlife. Gum trees
(150 varieties), eucalyptus,-
desert daisies; even the plants
sound exotic,
The Poths also visited the
Penguin Reserve, where baby
penguins wait to grow up in their
nests in the sand dunes. After
nightfall, gorged with two or three
times the food they need for
themselves, the parent penguins
stagger out of the sea to their
children who wait hungrily for ,
their meals,
Australians speak with a
Cockney lilt, Many of their
ancestors were British convicts
sent to Australia to populate and
colonize it.
During an intermission in the
slides, Rev. Reddoch, the Uniled
Church minister, thanked Mrs.
Poth and Mrs. Pemberton for
their presentation. A Britisher
himself, he told a little story: In
England people exclaim,
"Australia? That's where all the
convicts go to!" In Australia
however, they say, -England?
That's where all the convicts
cotne from!"
The audience moved
downstairs to chat and ask
questions. Mrs. Pemberton
displayed an Australian Opal ring
she had purchased. Refreshment
was provided by the United
