Michael was born in Clinton, Ontario in 1949 and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Corcoran of Calgary. He attended elementary schools in England, France, Trenton and Picton, Ontario. Michael graduated from St. Paul's Separate High School in Saskatdon with a special certificate for outstanding achievement in mathematics. Following a period of employment with the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, he was promoted to the position of branch officer, Michael entered the University of Calgary in 1968 and received the Stampede City Chapter Data Processing Management Association Scholarship in 1971.
