which is dark above and red-orange below.

with black, the breast is chestnut, paler on throat,
cheeks grey, flanks and undertail black barred
with white. Favors cattail marshes where its
basket-like nest is built over or near water.

sora; from southern Maritimes, southern Quebec
and Ontario to south-central Manitoba, Saskatche-
wan, in Alberta up to the Athabasca Delta, in

ri
Ottawa, —Dr. Lorne Donovan,
51, a corn breeder at the
Agriculture Canada Research
Station here, has been given the
highest possible Public Service
merit award.
Agriculture Minister H.A.
(Bud)Olson presented the $2,500
award today in recognition of Dr.
Donovan's outstanding
contributions towards the
development of early maturing
corn varieties, These varieties
sparked a 'corn boom' in Ontario
which is now spreading to other
parts of Canada,
"Dr. Donovan's research has
effectively pushed back the corn
frontier, making it possible for
hundreds of Canadian farmers to
reap the benefits of this crop
many miles north of the
traditional corn belt," said Mr.
Olson.
Since the potential for Canadian
corn production appeared small
compared to the established
production south of the border,
seed companies saw little
incentive to develop early-
Changes in the economic status
of women are being reflected in
life insurance sales, says Ernest
E. Brooker, president of Laurier
Life Insurance Company.
Women of all age groups are
buying insurance in greater
numbers today but particularly
noticeable is the interest shown
by younger married women. In the
past the buying of insurance has
almost solely been the
responsibility of the husband. But
the socio-economic revolution is
changing that, Brooker believes.
Noting that in the vast majority
of cases young married women
choose to continue working, he
points out that in the present-day
economic climate their job
security is frequently greater
than that of their husbands. In
addition, if their husbands work
on an hourly rated basis, strikes
and layoffs often reduce their
annual take-home pay to not much
more and sometimes less than
that of their wives.
At a time, too, when many men,
even in managerial positions, are.
looking for work, women in
various fields are finding greater
opportunity than ever before, The
result, says Brooker, is that
women are tending to become the
major economic force in many of
today's young families.
Their responsibility becomes
even greater, he says, when the
young marrieds start raising a
family and the wife elects to
continue working, something
which is becoming ever more
common. '
"This new-found status
undoubtedly has resulted in
women recognizing their greater

maturing varieties for the north,
Dr. Donovan is one of the
dedicated plant breeders in
federal, provincial and university
research organizations who set
out on the quest for new hybrid
varieties which could stand the
climatic test.
His personal career as a corn
breeder spans 20 years,
"Considering the fast pace in
North American corn breeding,
with about 30 new varieties
appearing every year, the $2,500
merit award indicates the
eminence of Dr. Donovan as a
scientist who has helped provide a
remarkable gain for Canadian
agriculture," Mr, Olson said,
About $80 million bushels of
corn are now grown annually, with
a value of more than $100 million
to the Canadian farmer, Although
Ontario has experienced the
major 'boom', new varieties such
as those developed by Dr.
Donovan are rolling hack the
frontiers in Quebec, the
Maritimes, British Columbia and
on the Prairies.
responsibility td the family unit,"
Brooker says, "and undoubtedly
has a bearing on their mounting
interest in purchasing protection
for their families."
The increased number of
separated and divorced women
probably is also reflected in
interest of women in a product
which was bought almost solely by
men since its introduction.
Although young men are showing
an amazing interest in insurance,
Mr. Brooker's company makes
its greatest number of sales to
women in the foiiy-five and above
age category. This is mainly due
to toe availability of a life
insurance policy particularly
designed for older people.
The president of Laurier Life
is confident that purchases of
insurance by women will continue
to grow as they become more
independent economically.
"An increasing number of
young married people are
becoming accustomed to the good
things in life provided by a double
income. As far as we can
discover, most young women no
longer want to wait 20 years for a
fur coat Or a holiday in the sun.
Not only that, but they enjoy the
excitement of working in a
business environment.
Laurier Life became aware of
the growing interest of young
women in insurance, oddly
enough, as the result of
advertising policies directed to
older groups.
"They simply wrote in asking if
there was . something available
which would suit their needs," he
said.
Processed and "natural" or
ripened cheeses are very similar
in composition and nutritive
value, even though flavor and
cooking quality are different, say
food specialists at the Ontario
Food Council, Ontario
Department of Agriculture and
Food.
Processed cheese is made
from natural or ripened cheese.
Processed Cheddar is likely most
familiar. Processed Swiss and
Gruyere are also commonly
available, To produce processed
cheese, a ripened cheese with a
well developed flavor (such as a
sharp Cheddar) is blended with an
unripened or green cheese. The
cheese is ihixed with a small
amount of water and a salt that
acts as an emulsifier. This
results in .a softer cheese that
slices easily and melts readily,
blending smoothly when heated
for sauce.
The cheese mixture is also
heated in it,s processing,
preventing the development of a
sharper flavor, and resulting in
-the mild flavor characteristic of
processed cheese,
The composition of natural
cheese is changed very little,
Only small amounts of water and
emulsifier are added. (Processed

FERTILIZING
ANNUALS
Those annuals that you planted
in late May and early June will
require just a little extra care to
keep them growing well all
summer, says Bob Crawford,
horticultural specialist, Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
In the greenhouse annuals had
water and fertilizer as they
needed it. Now that they are
established in the garden they
should also be provided with a
fertilizer, Dried manure or
compost can be dug into the bed if
it is available. Or apply a dry
chemical fertilizer. But for
faster results a water soluble
liquid fertilizer should be used.
When an organic source of
nutrients is applied, the nutrients
are not released until soil
organisms have broken down the
material. With dry chemical
fertilizers, nutrients are
available as soon as the fertilizer
dissolves. With water soluble
fertilizer the nutrients are
readily available and can be used
immediately by the plant.
For most plants a 20-20-20
water soluble fertilizer is best.
Remember to read the label and
follow the directions carefully to
avoid overfeeding or burning the
plants. Change in economic status
