This summer 11 provincial parks in southern Ontario will require a camper to choose his site under a pre-selection system of registration. These parks include the Pinery, Ipperwash, and Grand Bend. The system was tried on an experimental basis during last summer's camping season and proved to be advantageous for both park visitor and park management. Under the plan, a camper arriving at the campground office will select an unoccupied site, obtain his permit and then drive directly to the chosen location. If his first choice is unsuitable he must return to the office and change the registration before occupying an alternate site. A large map will permit the camper to instantly see and relate each available site to all park features and facilities including water, toilets and beach. Parks branch staff, of the ministry of natural resources, point out that the-new system has certain important advantages to the camper: elimination of need for camper to search out vacant campsites, the camper can now proceed directly to selected campsite; a considerable reduction in vehicle traffic on campground roads; only registered campers or their registered visitors may enter the camp ground area4 VEftESIER THE RIGHT TO UNITQUA1~1TITIES CLINTON PICKLING & CANNING SALE (Cut Extra Thick To BBQ) RED OR BLUE BRAND lb. r-74,rarliFtii 7 r, —TETST5F- 1 RED OR ! ! The perennial hostess dilemma is how to serve food that allows your fat guests to stay on their diets and satisfy the skinny one's yen for sweet and rich delicacies. it's a challenge to feed the Fats and the Flats at the same time and get praises from both! The solution lies in knowing that your thin friends won't sull'er for lack of the high calorie ingredients you'll leave out of your cooking for this special night. You'll give them lots of protein as good a prescription for underweight as for the overweight. And remember most skinnies, maddeningly enough, don't eat the fattening food most weight watchers crave, And furthermore, they don't eat as much either. So don't delude yourself that you have 16 serve butter-rich sauces and creamy desserts to insure an acceptable table, The main thing is that everything you serve should taste so good, be such fun to make, serve and eat that everybody will especially love to conic to your home. And aren't most of your friends, even if-they're not really overweight, secretly interested in maintaining their shape or losing an inch or two? Here's a general menu plan for your next open house, reception or barbecue get together. Start with a big bowl of tossed greens — it's a current vogue even with non weight watchers, Provide slimming dressing for your diet. conscious friends and if you think it's safe to have it on hand,, something like roquefort or Green Goddess dressing for the non weight conscious. A big, handsome roast turkey, spit-roasted Cornish hens or bar- becued chicken pieces could be the main course. Serve lots of fresh cooked garden vegetables to go with the main course, and a hand- some flesh fruit dessert. A basic plan like this can be varied according to the vegetables and fruits' in season, and with the wonderful flavour of home-grown products is appealing to guests right across the board. You should learn to recognize the plant, says R. W, Crawford, horticultural specialist, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. Poison ivy may grow as low shrubby plants carpeting the ground, as upright plants 2 or 3 feet high, or as vines winding themselves around trees and posts. The leaves of poison ivy consist of three leaflets. The stalk of the middle leaflet is longer than those of the side leaflets. They join together on a longer stalk growing front a woody stem, The leaves change color as the season progresses, from a reddish or bronze-green in spring and early summer, to a deep, bright green later on. Their upper surface is smooth and glossy. The small greenish-white flowers develop round, hard berries during the summer. When the leaves drop in the fall, poison ivy may be recognized by the clusters of these grayish-white berries, Poison ivy may be controlled by pulling or digging or through the use of chemical sprays. Pulling or cutting the plant could.expose the skin to the irritant oil which is present in the root, stem, leaf, flower and fruit. . The most convenient method of .applying herbicides is a two-to- three gallon sprayer. Two suggested chemicals are Amitrole and Silvex. Cover the leaves thoroughly. It may be necessary to spray more than once. And when using the chemicals, be sure to read the directions on the label. Spending the summer at the cottage? Before you go, visit your local Red Cross clinic and give blood.
