Mr. and Mrs. Charles Robinson, Bath, spent a few days with Mrs. Hugh McMurtrie. A surprise farewell party for Mr. and Mrs. George Walker was held June 28 in the Hensall Legion Hall. Arranged by the staff of the Queensway Nursing Home, the party was attended by 45 people, including husbands of tile staff. Keith Rouleton, former editor of theNews-Hecord, was guest of honour eta barbecue held at the home of Mr. and Mrs, J. Howard Aitken recently. Staff members of the Clinton office and their spouses and those of the Signal- Star staff who help produce the News-Record were present. A presentation was made to Keith and his wife, + + + Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Keys, Brenda and Brian attended the Shirley Field Fan Club field day on Sunday, July 2 at Whitby, Ontario. They enjoyed a picnic, contest, races, swimming, listening to country music and met many country music artists. Mrs. Keys, who is a real enthusiast, says she hopes that the fan club for Shirley Fields will grow in this area. Miss Fields and The Country Casuals are, now appearing in Listowel and will soon be at the Belvedere Hotel in London and the Colonial Hotel in Sarnia. Mrs. Wilfred H. Glazier, 122 Huron Street, Clinton, brought us in a bloom off a tulip tree which is blooming on her property. Lacking vase, we put it in an empty jar and have it on display. It is a very beautiful, delicately coloured flower and looks very fragile. Mrs. Glazier says it is the first time she has seen the BY MILLIE LOBS The June meeting of the S,S. No. 4 Community Club was held at the home of Phyllis Thompson. Harriett Tyndall, . the president opened the meeting with the Creed and Lord's Prayer. She then read a reading on What has happened to Husbands. Alison Lobb read the minutes of the last meeting and 17 members answered Roll Call with a Strawberry Recipe. Millie Lobb brought the financial report up to date. Plans were made for the annual picnic to be held in Seaforth Park and the September meeting place was undecided and will be set at a later date. Lunch was served with Dianne Lobb and Millie Lobb assisting the hostess.,, About 60 adults and children were present at the picnic. The older children and some of the men enjoyed a game of ball and Alison Lobb and Marilyn Forbes conducted some sports for the younger ones. Willis, $1,000 for carport. + + + A letter from Clinton Women's Institute to Council asked that the sale of fireworks be banned. Council decided to first investigate the possibility of having a supervised fireworks display for next year. The lot at the corner of High and Kirk Streets has been approved for sale by Council, Two hundred and fifty dollars was approved for the building of a partition in the Town Clerk's office. With the consent of the property owners affected, Griffith's Pond (sometime known as Cardwell's Pond), between William and Raglan Streets, near Central Huron Secondary School, will he dredged and drained. Council voted $200 for this purpose. Members of the SWEEP program will cut down the trees and brush in the area first. Monday, August 7, has been declared Civic Holiday. h•ERSONALS A. recent visitor at the John Merrill home was Andrew Nicholls of Huntingdon England. Andrew was in Canada on the Junior Farmer Exchange trip. Mr. and Mrs. John Merrill were surprised on their 25th wedding anniversary when 44 relatives and friends dropped in to spend the evening. Miss Wendy Tebbutt of St. Catharines is spending this week with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Irvine Tebbutt, Gregory Tebbutt was up for the weekend also. Several of the younger people of the community are spending time camping. Len Lobb, Gordon Lobb, Herb Oakes, Wayne Tebbutt and Don Watson, spent last weekend at the Falls. Susan Lobb and Marlene Yeo are camping in Kincardine this week. Mel and Harriett Klazinga and family camped at Pine Lake with relatives from Sarnia over the holiday weekend. The Armstrong Clan held a family reunion on Sunday, June 25, 1972 at Bayfield, There were approximately 100 members present who came from Wisconsin, U.S.A., Windsor, Hamilton, Woodstock, Kitchener, Tilbury, Owen Sound, Belleville, Port Hope,Toronto, Blyth, Barrie, London, Aylmer, Varna and Bayfield. Of this family of seven daughters and five sons all were represented except two families. Being a cold, damp day, the noon meal was held in the Bayfield Arena smorgasbord style after which most of the members drove out to the family farm on the Bronson Line on which a grandson, Wm. D. Armstrong resides; and enjoyed seeing the home where so many grandchildren spent happy summer holidays. Many antiques were on display and one could almost imagine that they saw grandmother and grandfather going about their many duties. All guests were registered and prizes given. The ones coming the farthest distance were Mr. and Mrs. Dave Ely, Wisconsin: largest family present, Mr. and Mrs.,Nelson McKelvie, Windsor: youngest child Jon, son of Mr, and Mrs. Don Scott, Aylmer; Oldest man, Mr, Ernie Pollock, Varna; oldest lady, Mrs. G. Purdy, Tara; Tallest man, Doug Armstrong, Bayfield; Anniversary birthday, Julia Armstrong; recent newlyweds Mr. and Mrs. Doug Armstrong, Bayfield. James Armstrong, father of the family, came from County Down, Ireland, sailing from Belfast, May19, 1841. In 1848 he married Janet Campbell at Seaforth, Ontario. Personals Mr. David Brown, Oshawa, visited a few days last week with Rick Westlake. Mr. and Mrs. Kris Klaudi, Freddie, Albert and Bobby, Princetown spent the weekend at their village home. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Burt, Jeff, Ronald and Timmy, Woodstock are spending this week at their residence on Sarnia Street, Mr. and Mrs. E. Squire, Mitchell were Dominion Day weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Parker. Mr, and Mrs. W.C. Parker, Charlie and Kim, London, visited Saturday with their respective parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Parker and Mrs. Helen Fraser. Mr. Alan Armstrong, University of Waterloo, spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm, D. Armstrong, Bronson Line. Miss Catherine Ann Westlake visited for a few days last week with her cousin Miss Marion Burnell of Guelph. Mr, and Mrs. Art Edwards, Kitchener were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Westlake and family. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Butcher and Matthew, Plattsville and Mr. Bob Butcher, St. Thomas were with Mr. and Mrs. John Lindsay for the holiday weekend, Mr. and Mrs. Auzzie Gatehouse, Brampton; Mr. L. Newcombe and C,M. Bourque both of London; Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Oilliott, St. Marys; Mr. and Mrs. John Koenig, Beaconsfield, Quebec; were entertained at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Gozzard and family and aboard their trimaran, "Manta" over the weekend. Mr. and Mrs, John Koenig of Beaconsfield Quebec, arrived in Bayfield on Friday afternoon to pick up their newly out-fitted motor sailer "Dear John" which had been outfitted by Bayfield Boat Yard. Mrs. L.W. Scotchmer returned home on Friday after spending the past week in Chatham as the guest of her son, daughter-in-law and family Mr. and Mrs. Howard Scotchmer, Robert and Lori. The Scotchmer family accompanied her home and remained with her for the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Pounder, John, Cathy and Mary, London were at their village residence for the weekend. Guests with them were Miss Karen Larson, London, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Harmon, Marine City, Michigan, and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Roth and family, Alma, Michigan. Mrs. Pounder and children are remaining for this week. Mr. and Mrs. Art Latimer, Bill and Christy, Toronto visited her mother, Mrs. Gilbert Knight for the Dominion Holiday weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Sturgeon, Jeff and Rollie Orangeville were with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Jack Sturgeon during the weekend. Miss Rhea Sturgeon and Miss Marg Malott, London were weekend guests of the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Sturgeon. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Westlake attended the Ontario Chiefs of Police Convention at the Valhalla Inn in Kitchener from Sunday to Thursday. Mrs. Westlake was the lucky winner of a vacuum cleaner at a luncheon draw on Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Pithlado and family of Oakville spent the holiday weekend in the village. Mrs. Myrtle Pease and Irvin, London were at their village home over the weekend. Mrs. Marg Garrett, Diane and John were the guests of Mr. and Mrs, Russell Cook, Blyth on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Don Haw, Ann, Bradley and Cathy, accompanied by Wendy Penhale spent the weekend in Dundalk as the guests of Mrs. Haw's parents Mr, and Mrs. Howard Riddell and attended the July 1st celebrations in Hopeville, Ontario. Mrs. Bev. McClinchey is spending a few days this week in London as the guest of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Terrence McClinchey. Dr. and Mrs. E.G. Shepherd of Windsor and granddaughter Miss Mary Beth Duncan were registered guests at the Albion Hotel for the weekend and also visited with Mr. and Mrs. Carl Diehl. Mr. and Mrs. George Durham and two sons from Clarkson were weekend guests of his uncle Carl and Mrs. Diehl. Miss Arnold and Miss Isaacs, London, are spending a fortnight in Miss Kay Reid's cottage "Enfield", Miss Kathleen Reid, Windsor visited with Mr, and Mrs. Carl Diehl from Wednesday till Monday, She has just returned from a holiday in England where she visited with a cousin in Tenterton, Kent. Miss Patricia Payne, London was with her parents and brothers, Mr, and Mrs. Warner Payne, Paul and Peter over the holiday weekend, Canon and Mrs. F.H. Paull returned Friday from a five-week tour of England, Joining them on Saturday was Miss Carrie Dixon. They were aboard the Queen Elizabeth II on their way to England when a bomb was reported aboard her. The Charter was draped in memory of the asembly President, Mrs, Beaton reported for the visiting committee, Arrangements were made for the Past Noble Grands to attend the inaugural meeting at the Edelweiss Rebekah Lodge, Seaforth, The officers elected for the ensuing term were elected by acclamation, The 1,0.0.F. and Rebekah Picnic will be held at the Elensall Community Park, July 9, Mrs. Bertha MacGregor gave a reports only one lady passenger was somewhat upset; and no one panicked,On their return trip on the Queen Elizabeth II they had to alter their course somewhat due to many icebergs; but they were thankful they had missed hurricane Agnes. They all reported a most enjoyable vacation. Mr. and Mrs. Morris Scott attended a Citizens Band Radio Convention in Cowan's Park, north of St. Thomas this past weekend. Thousands of people Iran Canada and the United States, some from as far away as California lined the twenty-acre site, Many interesting radio displays, tents, rides, children's games and numerous articles of interest to everyone were set up. Mr. and Mrs. Scott said they had enjoyed the convention and hospitality se much they intend to attend the next one in Brantford in early September. Mr. and Mrs. G. Mansfield, St. Catharines visited with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Grant Turner over the holiday weekend. More than 50 relatives and friends gathered in the basement of St. Andrew's United Church last Sunday to honour Mr. and Mrs. Charles Scotchmer on the occasion of their fortieth wedding anniversary. The head table was artistically decorated with mums, spring flowers and daisies on a white linen table cloth, featuring a wedding cake in pink and white theme. Seated with Charlie and Lulu were their attendants of 40 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Scotchmer of RR 3, Bayfield. During the pot-luck supper, they were the recipients of many lovely gifts including a recliner chair, the gift of their family., Mr. and Mrs. Scotchmer were married in Zurich in the Lutheran Church. They have three daughters Mrs. Percy (Patsy) Renner; Mrs. Gordon (Charlene) Porter and Mrs. Ken (Ruth-Ann) Knights and eight grandchildren. We wish this popular couple many more happy and prosperous years together. Commanding Officer Murray and Mrs. Reid of Angus, Ontario, spent the holiday weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Roy Scotchmer. The Reids were the first occupants of the Scotchmer cottage in 1958 while stationed at the former Canadian Forces Base Clinton. Congratulations to the following Grade 8 graduates of Brucefield Centennial School from our village. Lorry York who won the $25, Ruth Hayman Academic Award which is awarded to a pupil from Bayfield who achieves the highest academic standing. Lorry was also the recipient of a trophy for the top academic girl in Brucefield School. Shirley McFadden who won the Best all- round girl, and to graduates Valerie Merner, Darlene Warner, Norma Garrett, Blair Brandon, Peter McVean, Peggy Beach, and Tom Hill, Best of luck to these young people in High School. St, Andrews United Church Congregational Picnic was held in Clan Gregor Square on Sunday, July 2. Planned by 3 M's Group, the pot-luck picnic basket lunch was enjoyed at noon hour followed by contests and games, Mr, and Mrs, John Siertsema, presidents, ran the sports for the younger set which included races candy scramble and ball throwing. Mr. and Mrs, Tom Penhale, secretaries were in charge of the adult relays and contests, . . The Annual Chicken Barbecue SUNDAY MORNING SERVICE AT THE UNITED CHURCH At a joint service in Hensall United Church Sunday morning, Mrs. Frank Warder of London was the guest soloist and sang "How Great Thou Art", with Mrs, John Turkheim accompanying on the organ. Rev. Don Beck chose for his sermon topic "First reunion sponsored by the United Church Women was termed a huge success when over 800 people enjoyed barbecued chicken, salads and delicious pies. On Monday, June 26 (not mentioning any names) a talented group from the Hayfield Lion's Club, assisted by their wives; put on a skit at Lucknow to assist the Lucknow Lion's Club raise money for a swimming pool, The name of the skit was the "Hayfield Whistlers", and it took second prize out of 14 contestants. Needless to say, and for good reason; Pat and .Eric were the champion whistlers; but Jack was the best looking Bathing Beauty. The prize of $15,00 was donated back to the Lucknow Club, Friday evening, June 30, with the assistance of some very fine donkey riders from Varna, the Bayfield Lions and residents put on a Donkey Baseball Game, which brought a lot of laughs and much fun; and maybe some "sore spots". It also raised enough money to defray most of the expense of swimming lessons for the youngsters in this area and Varna. The Lions do really appreciate the way everyone supported them in this effort and particularly Jack and Joan Merner and the Varna team which really helped make the evening a big success. A skit entitled "A Day at Kingswar was presented by five members of the staff, Peggy Volland, Wanda McClinchey, Donna Lavery, Eunice Aikenhead and Minnie Noakes. This production was very much enjoyed by everyone. A beautiful set of wall plaque,; was presented to Mr, and Mrs, Walker, with Mrs, Noakes reading the address and Mrs. Aikenhead making the presentation.
