CARL IIPVIINGWAY In the April issue of "Hog Production" thereis a report of the semi, annual meeting. There apparently was a lot of time spent discussing a pork insurance program. It reminds me of the story of owlt fighthatwas being given a pretty rough time by a flock of crows, le couldn'tittle hack so he just hunched up his feathers and kept muttering "One at a time boys, one at a time! We've hardly recovered from the bombardment of promotion put out by our farm organs and Government literature to support Bill C-176, We were told that Bill C-176 by providing legislation to permit a National Marketing Board through co-operation with the Provincial Marketing Agency, along with the power to introduce quota production, would keep the price at a profitable level, From the reports I hear it has done a satisfactory job for the-Ontario Broiler growers, it seems to be doing.alright for the milk producers and the egg producers apparently think it will be a good thing for them even though it is too late for the farm flock, Wily• are we being side-tracked by a pork insurance scheme? Could it just be possible that tile irnplirn entation of Bill C-176, might interfere with the "cheap food policy"? Was the Prime Minister's suggestion that there wouldn't be any more "deficiency payments" a hint to our farm organization leaders that they should get the farmers distracted by a pork insurance program? Hog producers have reason to be seriously concerned by this proposal that was too narrowly supported to be accepted but a majority of the delegates did vote for it, It is to be presented to county meetings. Let's take a look at the idea. The payment of insurance to the producer would be made when the price fell below the "cost of production". Who is going to bell the cat" by setting the "cost of production"? Is it going to be set on the basis of the cost of the feeder who raises his own feeders, uses only high moisture corn, home grown, and buys only concentrate? Or will the cost be arrived at on. the basis of purchased feeders and fed on a complete purchased feed? If the promotion is to receive strong support by influential powers the "cost of production" will have to be set on the latter basis. If it is, we can be assured that there will be an abundant supply of hogs — and border-line prices. The feeder will be guaranteed against loss and the contracting feed company will be guaranteed a good profit on a steady volume of feed. We'd better watch it, the bait is good. It is only going to cost 25 cents per hog and the government is expected to match it. Just remember that, according to the latest available Crop Insurance Financial Statement, it cost more for administration than it cost for claims so the government contribution would be lost to the hog producers. Why can't hog producers set up their own trust fund by depositing 25 cents per hog in a non-chequing account? Let's use the legislation that has been provided and keep the price at a profitable level. Lady golfers hold Opening banquet The Ladies' Section of the Maitland Country Club held its annual opening dinner banquet last Thursday evening, There was a capacity crowd of 60 women at the event, 30 more than last year's opening. Mrs. Eva Bruce was presented With an honorary life-time Membership by the President of the Club's Board of Directors, Dan Murphy. Mrs, Bruce is an 40-year-old member of the club. At the insistance of her fiance, she took up golfing at the age of 21 and has been golfing ever since. When Mrs, Bruce gormarried and became parent to four children, she had to curtail her golfing until her early 40's, Then she started playing again in earnest, making up for lost time. With her lowest handicap at 14, Mrs. Bruce scored consistently in the low 80's. She has won prizes at tournaments all over western Ontario, where most of her golf activities have been confined. After 62 years of golfing, Mrs. Bruce is still at it, with the distinction of having had her name engraved on the Rose Bowl, The Executive of the Ladies' Golfing Section of the Maitland Country Club is Verna Kane, president; Jean Knight, past president; Velma Campion, secretary-treasurer; Hazel Beaver, social convener; Joyce Bolton, games captain; Marilyn MacKay, handicap captain; and Shelagh Sully, member of board of directors.
