Niels F. Petersen, President of
The Sterling Trusts corporation,
today announced an increase of 11
per cent in the operating profit of
the Corporation for the First
Quarter of 1972, the net earnings
from operations being $211,000
compared with $175,500 for the
First Quarter of 1971, This
increase in operating profit is

Ontario's -educational system
and its quality were rated good by
the majority of 1,000 parents
surveyed during the past year.
The survey, by an independent
research group undertaken for
the Ministry of Education,
indicated that universal
availability was the best feature .
of the system,
Details of the study were
released by Education Minister
Thomas Wells last week in a
speech to the annual convention of
the Ontario Federation of Home
and School Associations at
Niagara Falls.
The survey found that 85 per
cent of those interviewed were
happy with the quality of education
provided and that most also
agreed that their children were
basically happy with their
education, Not only were those
interviewed generally satisfied,
70 per cent said that education has
improved in the past five years.
The study found that the sex,
geographic region, income and
educational level of the parents
interviewed made little
difference with respect to their
opinions of the system and its
quality. The only significant
factor was the age of those
interviewed, Younger parents,
those in their twenties, were
more apt to be enthused about
their child's education and the
school system.
The -researchers found the
parents tobe more satisfied with
the elementary system than the
secondary,
To the parents surveyed quality
education means a system that
instills students with learning,
occupational and social skills
combined with the values of self-
sufficiency, respect for learning,
respect for others and self-
discipline.
Keys to quality education as
rated by the parents were
competent, student-centred
teaching by qualified and
dedicated teachers, and courses
which are fundamental, practical,
interesting and varied.
The parents stated that the
traditional "Three R's" should
be emphasized in quality
education. The areas of the
curriculum they judged to be weak
included penmanship, grammar,
reading speed and Canadian
studies. They suggested that
teachers put greater emphasis on
formal instruction and also
become more involved with
student problems, exhibit more
dedication and keep parents
better informed,
They supported small classes
and judged the ideal student-
teacher ratio to be about 20 to 1.
The majority also indicated that
Many
vegetables
can be grown
A surprising amount of
vegetables can be grown in a
small area in your own back yard.
A few tomato plants will usually
supply all the tomatoes the
average family can use from
midsummer until frosts occur.
Green onions, radishes, carrots
and beets are other popular
vegetables to include in a kitchen
garden.
Peas are also popular.
However, they must be planted
early. Corn and vine crops
require plenty of space. If you
have the room, plant more than
one variety of sweet corn. Then
you will have a second variety
ready after the early varieties
are finished.
Most vegetables can be grown
by planting seed in well-prepared
soil says, Russ Gomme,
horticultural specialist, Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
The exceptions are tomatoes and
peppers. They should be planted
as seedlings after the danger of
frost is past.
they believed current teachers'
Salaries were "just about right"
to insure quality in the teaching
profession,
A slight majority opposed open
space classrooms, believe that
the discipline should be stricter
and that the quality of school
counselling is inadequate, They
also indicated that the vocational
preparation offered by the system
does not ready the student for the
working world.
The parents stated that the
teacher, the teaching profession
and the school principal should be
the key forces in deciding what
and how to teach. The student,
parent-teacher groups, the school
trustees and the general public
were also rated as candidates for
decision-making but to a much
lesser extent, Parent-teacher
interviews rated highest for
parental involvement with the
system while a suggestion of
house calls,by teachers was flatly
rejected.
Although the study indicated
that more than 90 per cent of the
parents have a positive image of
the quality of education in
Ontario, most had suggestions for
improvements.
Parents rate Ontario
4 ,. educational system highly -
with 20 cents for the First
Quarter of 1971. The decrease in
earnings per share reflects an
increase in the number of shares
outstanding at the end of the First
Quarter of 19'72.
Mr. Petersen anticipates that
the trend to increased profits will
continue despite a tendency for
interest rates to increase. BALL-MACAULAY
