BY SHIRLEY .1 KEI LER UCW learn about educational systems This weekend marks the first long holiday weekend of the spring and summer season. You guessed it. I'm looking forward to it and yes, we're planning to spend it at our trailer. Actually we've been out to the trailer several times this season already just getting the place in shape for the summer to come. Funny thing about that trailer. The work we do there isn't work at all it is sheer enjoyment for my husband and me. We've got several things planned both indoors and out. Just simple little improvements which we hope will make things all the more pleasant this summer. The first thing on the agenda is a fishworm holder. What's that? I didn't have a clue either. I don't fish and neither does my husband but we decided that since our youngest child had shown such an interest in fishing last summer, we'd get him some fishing gear for his birthday, It took a quick trip over to Canadian Tire to find just the rod and reel we were looking for. And as far as we knew, our boy was outfitted for fishing — and our parental duty had been fulfilled. Not so. A good neighbour who is also an avid fisherman told us that bait was almost more essential than the rod. "I doubt that there will be many fish worms among all those trees," said our neighbour. "You are going to have to take bait with you." That's just what I wanted to hear, In addition to the clothes and the food and the beer and the books from the library each weekend, I'm going to have to tote along a can of worms. "Where do you buy worms?" I asked, hoping he'd tell me of some quaint little place nearby to the trailer. BUYING? The minutes of the previous General Meeting were read by Mrs. H, Porter and the treasurer's report given by Mrs. B, Sutter, The Committee reports were given by the various conveners and showed excellent progress. Mrs. Les Ball reported 24 cartons of clothing contributed and asked for further articles for Angola, death-row in the Penitentiary.—someplace to keep the victims in the best of health but secured until the sentence is carried out. A fishworm holder can be easily made by digging a sizeable hole in a cool, but not too cool, area of the yard, When you've scooped out all the earth, you drop .in a piece of fine screening. Then you camouflage your trap by filling it with sweet, fine. cool, but not too cool, moist earth. Into that haven you place the unsuspecting worms you've collected by the light of the moon and then, to further the crime against those helpless creatures, yon snap on a fine mesh lid so the captives cannot escape. They must then just wait until they are crucified and sent to a watery grave. But by far the most controversial issue this spring is the set of steps leading up to the trailer door. My husband is a one- use builder. I'm a several-uses construction foreman. The Clinton Women's Institutes recently celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario with a dinner at St. Andrews Church hall. Seen at the head table are: (left to right), Mrs. Amber Popp, president, Mrs. Cecil Elliott, vice-president and Mrs. Harold Gaunt, St. Helens, District President for Huron West,—photo by Peggy Gibb, Mr, 'Nediger spoke more pari'cularly on Leningrad, Estonia and Moscow giving vivid descriptions of the. beautiful pictures he showed and interesting facts and figures on these countries. Of these one was the stress laid op the Group system as against that of stressing the individual and another the system of nursery schools beginning at four months of age so parents may work. The results of such a system are yet to be proved, It was an interesting, and informative evening interspersed with bits of dry humour which delighted the audience. Mrs. H, Harvey thanked the speaker and the meeting closed with prayer by Dr. Mowatt. Mrs. Curry reported for Citizenship and Social action, Mrs. Nelson for Stewardship, reading an appropriate passage on the subject. Mrs, M, Holland, Christian and Missionary Education, made a request for help for the Explorers Group entertainment. The president announced the plans for the Retreat June 4 from 9:30 until 3 o'clock at Menesetung Camp, Goderich: An invitation was received from Brucefield U.C.W. to attend their Visitors Day to be held Tuesday, June 6. Plans were set afoot for a "Shut-In Day" and "Get Acquainted Day" June 21 at the home of Mrs. Frank Finland. The meeting then repaired to the sanctuary where the devotionals were held, led by Mrs. C. Stewart. The Scripture lesson was read by Mrs. Wilfred Jervis and prayer offered by Mrs, H. Howard. Mrs. Davies then introduced the guest speaker for the evening, Mr. Bill Nediger who had recently attended an Educational Seminar in Russia, Bulgaria and France. The purpose of this was to learn something of the educational system of these countries. "All you have to do is go outside after dark with a flashlight and pick them up off the top of the ground. But you'll need someplace to keep them." Worms, I learned, needed to be alive and well until they were threaded onto the fish hook, all squiggly and wiggly and screaming with pain. That necessitates a set-up similar to Films in school The argument is raging. Husband says a set of steps is a set of steps and nothing more, If they take you from ground level to the door they have played their part. I say that stepping is just the beginning of a whole host of exciting and useful functions for a set of steps. For instance, with a railing around, it could become a planter for flowers. With a roof over it, it could become a porch, Closed in beneath, it could be a storage shed. Built out at one side, it could rack bicycles. Spread out across the bottom, it could be a sun deck. And that's just the beginning. If it had steps up both sides it could make for easy access to the road and to the barbecue. If it was built with foresight it could be a clothesline stand. If it was screened in it could provide a mosquito-free haven on a mosquito infested night. If it was built of cement, it could encompass a barbecue. There's not much use to think about it any more. The steps will be steps and nothing else — and once more my Better Homes and Garden training goes amuck. NO PURCHASE NECESSARY Simply pick up a coupon at any dealer displaying this contest. The Ministry of Education thinks so because it has included Dr. Strangelove, and other films such as A Man For All Seasons. The Chase, 1984, On The Waterfront, and In Cold Blood as teaching aids that can be effectively used with a new Ministry curriculum guideline on law. Also included is a 12 part Ontario Educational Communications Authority series, "The Law and Where it's At". The new guideline is designed to allow teachers to develop courses which will provide students with an in-depth understanding of law as it relates to our society. To this end the guideline recognizes nine broad ,areas of law, commercial, constitutional, criminal, and quasi criminal, fam, ily, international, labor and welfare legislation, laws affecting property real and personal and general topics such as election legislation municipal and school law. Education Minister Thomas Wells said that courses developed within the guidelines will provide: students with an understanding of law as it relates to responsibilities and rights within the framework of our legal system. The courses will also give students a better understanding of the mechanics of society's legal, business, social and governmental institutions, he said.
