Well known :Clinton resident dies at 77
ELMER WILLIAM
cOLOOVHOUN
Elmer William "Hill" Colquhoun, who
came to Clinton in 1930 when Ontario Hydro
opened its first office here, died Thursday,
May 11 in Clinton Public Hospital, He was in
his 7.8th year and had been in hospital for two
months. Mr. Colquhoun haltheenillfor over a
year, Since1950 he had resided at 111 Huron
Street.
Born in Hibbert Township, Perth County, on
October 3,1094, he was the second son of the
late Mr, and Mrs. Arthur E. Colquhoun.
After his marriage in March, 1916, to
Isabelle Catherine (Belle) McKellar, who
survives, they farmed near Shaunavon, Sask.
After three years they returned to Hibbert
Township and farmed until Mr. Colquhoun
joined the Mitchell area of Ontario Hydro in
1929, He stayed with the hydro until joining the
RCAF in 1943 as an electrician with the
construction and maintenance unit. Stationed
in Alberta during the war, Mr. Colquhoun
Stayed in that province as an electrician until
returning to Clinton in 1950. He then worked at
his trade at. Canadian Forces Base Clinton
until his retirement in 1960.
Mr. Calquhoun was a life member of Clinton
Branch 140 of the Royal Canadian Legion,
which held a remembrance service at the
funeral home Friday evening, May 12. He was
also an active member of Huron Fish and
Game Conservation Association, and all his
life had been active and interested in sports.
Surviving, besides his wife Isabelle, are
four daughters, Mrs, Leonard (Jean)
Londeshoro; Mrs. Leonard H.
(Isabel) Theedom, North Bay; Mrs. George
(Audrey) Hepburn, Willowdale and Mrs. John
E. (Margaret) Robinson, R.R.1, Zurich; seven
sons, A,Laurie, Donald C,, Kenneth W., of
Clinton; Ross M., London; Murray E, and
Thomas H., Clinton, and Hugh M., London.
Also surviving are 39 grandchildren and nine
great grandchildren; one sister,'Mrs. Ernest
S. (Marion) Allen, of Mitchell,
The funeral service at Beattie FUneral
Home, 55 RattenbUry St., Clinton, on Saturday,
May 13, was conducted by Rev. Thomas C.
Mulholland of Seaforth and Clinton
Presbyterian Churches, Pallbearers were
six grandsons, K. Laurie, Donald A., Jackie B.
and Clare 5, Colquhoun, all of Clinton; Alan
Caldwell, Auburn and Thomas J, Robinson,
R.R.1, Zurich. Flower bearers were four
granddaughters, Cindy, Debbie, Caroline and
Kim Colquhoun, all of Clinton.
Interment took place in the family plot in
Roy's Cemetery, Fullarton Township, where
many relatives and friends from that area
attended the graveside service.
Relatives attended the funeral from
Victoria and Ladysmith, B.C„ Ottawa,
Willowdale, North Bay, London, Hanover,
Mitchell and the immediate area.

Varna recently graduated from
the Centralia College of
Agricultural Technology, Huron
Park, Ontario with a diploma in
Animal Health Technology.
The May meeting of Hensall
Women's Institute met in the
Legion Hall with president Mrs.
B. Beaton in the chair. Members
answered the roll call by telling
where and by whom they were
baptized. Mrs, Beaton welcomed
guests and several new members.
Plans were finalized for attending
the District Annual and delegates
were appointed.
The next meeting will be in the
form of a dinner at the Hotel with
the meeting to follow. Any
members wishing to attend who
were not at the meeting should
contact Mrs. M. Sherritt, The
theme of the meeting was
Historical Research with
conveners Mrs. Elgie and Mrs.
Sherritt who took the chair for the
programme and introduced the
guest speaker, Mrs, A. Couper,
who gave a fascinating talk and
demonstration on spinning and
dying wool. She also had on
display several garments which
she had made.
Piano duets by Cathie and
Michael Neilands were enjoyed by
all, as were accordian selections
by Patsy Bender and Susan Grigg
from Dashwood. Mrs. Elgie read
a poem "The Patchwork Quilt",
and displayed several beautiful
quilts. Prizes were awarded to
several grandmothers—Mrs.
Beaton, Mrs. .Orr and Mrs.
Binnendyk. Courtesy remarks
were given by Miss Greta
Laramie. A delicious lunch was
served by the hostesses, Mrs.
Peck, Mrs. McAllister and their
committee.
W.M.S. OF CARMEL
PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
MEETING
The W.M.S, of Carmel
Presbyterian Church was held
Monday evening. President Mrs.
Rachel Schwalm opened the
meeting with a poem,,The worship
was taken by Mrs. Ruby Hoggarth
and Mrs. Edith Bell using the
theme "Mothers". Mrs. Maggio
Campbell read a poem entitled
"Mother's Hands". Minutes were
read and approved. Roll call was
answered by 12. Mrs. Schwalm
read a poem called "Peace",
Mrs. Emma Campbell read a
portion from the Glad Tidings
entitled "Church music". Plans
were made for the 82nd birthday
party of the W.M.S. to be held June
5 at 8:15 p.m. with .the guest
speaker to be Mrs. Gordon
Whitton of St. Catharines. Prayer
was given by Mrs. Pearl Love,
and Mrs. Blanche Dougall read
"The act of Growing old". Mrs.
Rochus Faber gave a report on the
Synodical which she attended. The
meeting closed with the
benediction by Mrs. Aldene
Volland.
EUCHRE PARTY HELD
A very successful Dessert
Euchre, sponsored by the
members of the Rebekah Lodge,
was held in the Hensall Lodge
rooms last Wednesday afternoon,

Prizes for high score on the pink
cards went to Mrs. Jean Johns,
Exeter; low score, Mrs. Pearl
Eyre, Brucefield, Prize for the
high score on the green card went
to Mrs. Marjorie Caldwell,
Brucefield; low score, Mrs.
Mavis Atthill, Exeter. Lone hands
was won by Mrs. Lena Kirkland,
Exeter. The lucky card was won
by Mrs, John Broadfoot,
Brucefield,
ST. PAULS A.C.W.
MEETING
The regular meeting of the
A.C.W. of St., Pads Anglican
Church, Hensall, was held May
11, President Mrs. W. Scrabuik
opened the meeting with the
members' prayer. The minutes
were read and approved, Roll call
was answered with a Bible verse
having a word repeating, and also
verses pertaining to the
Ascension.
The financial report of the
smorgasbord was given and was
most gratifying. Miss Olive Petty
gave the study, with the topic
"Always look up". Devotions
from The Living Message
followed. Those taking part were
Mrs. G. A. Anderson, Mrs, Mary
Taylor, Mrs. F. Forrest and Mrs,
Scrabuik. Mrs. Windover gave a
report on the A.C,W, Annual
meeting which was held in
London. Plans were made for the
Deanery meeting which will be
held at Trivitt Memorial Church,
Exeter, also the 95th Anniversary
of St. Paul's Anglican Church
which will be held on May 28 at 7
p.m. Rev. G. A. Anderson closed
the meeting with prayer.
CHISELHURT U.C.W.
MEETING
The Chiselhurst U.C.W. held
their meeting May 9. Mrs. Alvin
Cole opened the meeting with a
poem "Live well today", followed
by the theme song and prayer.
Mrs. Boyce gave the worship
entitled "Let the people praise
thee". Fifteen members and two
visitors answered the roll call, A
short business session took
place. Mrs, R. Taylor introduced
Mrs. Rachel Schwalm, who told of
her trips to Africa and the
Barbados, which was very
interesting. Mrs. Tom Brintnell
thanked Mrs. Schwalm and
presented her with a gift, Mrs,
Alvin Cole closed the meeting
with the benediction. A plant and
bake sale was held after the
meeting which was a real
success, with proceeds to go to
send blankets overseas.
Hostesses were Mrs. William
Brintnell and Mrs. Roy
MacDonald.
HENSALL UNITED CHURCH
MESSENGERS
Hensall United Church
Messengers met Monday
afternoon at the Church with an
attendance of 10. To open the
meeting, the messenger motto
was repeated. A Bible *story "A
letter for Elaine" was read and
discussed. Songs were sung off
the Africa record. The offering
was taken by Steven McGregor.
The country of Liberia was
introduced and discussed.
Liberian proverbs were read by
the children. A story entitled
"Macuva's Afternoon" was read
and questions answered on it.
Prayers were read by Randy
Parker and Marilyn Pepper. Next
meeting will be June 19.
UNITED CHURCH SERVICE
SUNDAY MORNING
Hensall United Church was
filled Sunday morning for the
Christian Family Service, Rev.
Don Beck chose the topic "Love"
for his sermon, The Junior Choir
occupied the choir loft and sang a
very appropriate number for the
day, "My Mother's Love". Three
babies received the rights of
baptism; they were Scott Paul,
son of Mr. 'and Mrs, Felix
Boogemans; Craig William, son
of Mr. and Mrs. William Soldan;
Paul Andrew, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Barry Tucker. FloWers in the
Church were placed there by the
families in memory of the late
Garfield Broderick and Byron
Kyle. At Chiselhurst service
earlier in the morning, Gordon
Harold William, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Bev Hamilton received the
rights of baptism.
