Bruce Bartliff presents the "E" championship trophy to Rick Campbell of Paisley who led his team to a win over Brussels and the championship. Doug Andrews presents the "C" trophy at they. Bantam tournament to Alan Piay captain of the Dresden team which knocked off the Clinton Bantams to gain the championship. Mitchell play the return game here Thursday at 7:30. A Clinton win will force a third game to decide the opponent of the Goderich-Hensall series. Clinton midgets downed Zurich 7-4 Saturday night to win the best of three series two games to none. They had previously defeated Zurich 4-3 in Clinton on Tuesday night. In that game, Mike Anstett opened up the scoring at 2.20 of the first period only to have Zurich take a 3-1 lead at .the end of the second period. In the third period, Randy Miller scored at 5.06 and 14.48 to tie the game at 3-3. At 16.33, Richard Grenier went off for an interference penalty and 20 seconds later Don Stewart banged in the winner on a play set up by Dan Colquhoun and Rick Cameron. The Clinton Bantam tournament wound up on Sunday night with four championships decided. The third weekend of activity began Friday night when Listowel and Elmira played a game postponed from the week before because of a storm. Listowel scored a goal in overtime to defeat Elmira and advance in "B" play. The winning goal was the second of the night for Danny Kraemer. Rick Selling scored three goals for Elmira. Clinton started play Saturday afternoon by defeating Ridgetown 4-3. The local team took a 4-1 lead, then held on as Ridgetown made a late bid.- In action, Huron Park edged Newcastle 6-4 as Randy Funston and Matthew Mullen each scored two goals. In a semi-final "C" game, Dresden dumped Lambeth 7-4. Don Martin scored three goals for Dresden and Neil Coke scored two. Peewees win The Kinsmen Pee Wees have played four games this week one with Seaforth and three in the Mitchell Pee Wee Tournament. IntWsetztil game of, the zone, playoffs akallist Seaforth, Clinton came up with the best game they have played this year when they defeated Seaforth 4-0. John McMahon scored on a play from R., Heard and Bill Roy for the only goal of the first period. On Saturday night, Mike Anstett picked up five points with three goals and two assists to lead Clinton to their second series win. Other Clinton scorers were Don Stewart with two goals and singles by Dan Colquhoun and John Vanloo. Clinton now meets the winner of Goderich and Seaforth in the finals of which they were champions of last year'. Seaforth is the team that defeated Clinton two games to one in WOAA playoffs but were thrown out because of using two unsigned players. It is also hoped that a half decent crowd turn out to support the boys as recent crowds have been pitiful. Brussels beat Zurich 3-0 in the "E" semi final. In Saturday evening play, Sarnia township defeated Huron Park 8-3 in "D" play. The game saw 14 penalties called. The next game, however, saw only four penalties called, all to Listov,rel as Listowel defeated Meaford 5-2, scoring four goals in the final period. The other semi-final for "B" was won by Blenheim by a 7-2 count over Hanover. Again there were only four penalties. CHAMPIONSHIPS Championship play began Sunday afternoon when St. George won the "D" championship, defeating Sarnia Township 9-4. Puck-luck and penalties helped St. George to the victory. They were able to take advantage of their opportunities while Sarnia Two, was not. Sarnia also hurt their chances by picking up seven penalties in the final period. In the second period, Gary Tebhutt got an unassisted goal. and Raymond Wheeler' finished oft a play started by Steve Jones and Paul Wise. In the third. R. Heard scored on a pass from Pete Thompson and Bill Roy. lithe coach can keep the boys skating and checking like this, they can win the zone title. In the Mitchell Tournament they nAit New Hamburg at 12:30 and IM 2-1. This was the tightest game in the entire series. At 4p.m. they took on Arthur and won 6-0 and at 7:00 they won the "B" series by blanking Wiliam 5-0, Three games in a little over six hours and it was a great day for Derek Divok and John McMahon. Derek stopped 47 shots and allowed only two goals in three games. This won him the Joe Higgins trophy for the outstanding goalie. John scored seven goals and one assist in the three games, and was the most serious contender for the most valuable player award. D. Anstett of Seaforth won this one, although New Hamburg defeated them 5- 2. Of the other goals scored, Gary Tebhutt got two, R. Heard, R. Taylor' and Bill Roy, one each. The third and deciding game against Seaforth is on Thursday night at 6:30. On Friday they open the Goderich Young Canada Tournament by playing Forest, and on Saturday are to play two games against Dearborn. Twice they had three men in the penalty box at one time. David Roung led St. George with three goals and three assists, The biggest disappointment of the afternoon occurred when a large home crowd saw the Clinton Bantams unable to bring home the "C" championship. Tile team trailed 1-0 after one period but tied the score in the second. They came out hot in the third but couldn't put the puck in the net and after five minutes of extreme pressure they sagged and Dresden picked up the first of four goals, Trailing 5-2, the Bantams looked like they might make another sensational comeback in the final minutes when they scored one goal with just over' two minutes left and nearly scored another in the last minute, They couldn't pull out a victory however. Cal McCabe led Dresden with two goals. Mike Whitton. Wally McFadden. Neil Coke scored the other's. Bantams second in touPnament The Fish and Game Bantams lost to Dresden 5-3 Sunday afternoon in the Bantam Tournament 'C'' final in a hard- fought game, At the end of the second period. the teams were tied 2-2 and Clinton came on strong to start the third. Their efforts were thwarted a.s they applied pressure for five initiates. Dresden came back to take the lead and they never relinquished it. Dave Counter' scored Clinton's first goal from Neil Colquhoun and Jamie Thompson and Steve Cook got the other' two—both from Jamie Thompson. On Saturday, Clinton beat Ridgetown 4-3, the game which put them in the final. They carried a lead of 4-1 late in the third period on two goals by Greg Butler, one assisted by Steve Cook and one by Robin McAdam and two goals by Jamie Thompson, one set up by John Graham, the other unassisted. They withstood a late drive by Ridgetown which fell short and became the first local team to arrive in the finals in lire Clinton Bantam Tournament. There was a fair crowd in attendance Saturday, and Sunday's turnout was very gratifying to the committee who put in so much time in organizing this tournament. Dave Counter and Steve Cook with two accounted for Clinton's scoring. Paisley and Brussels played a scoreless draw until late in the game in the "E" final, Brussels' goaltender, Hugh Nichol, was outstanding in the net but was finally beaten by Rick Campbell on the first of two goals with 3:55 left. With 24 seconds left, Campbell shot the puck into an empty net to seal the win. Listowel and Blenheim provided a true finale to the tournament when they met in an exciting "B" final. First one team, then the other', took the lead in a fast, hard- checking game. In the long run, however., it was Blenheim out on top by a 7--4 count as they scored four' unanswered goals in the last seven minutes. Mike McNear scored three goals and David O'Brien two for the winners. The others came from Danny Gagner and Lee Attewell. WE HAVE A FREE PICK-UP AND DELIVERY sERVICE • A 4-2 loss to Goderich on Thursday left the Clinton Bantams in third place in Zone 1 with a 9-6-1 record. a lack-lustre game which could have gone either way, Clinton's goals were notched by Steve Cook from Greg Butler and Mike Gibbings from Jamie Thompson and John Graham. This set up a playoff series (best two out of three) against Mitchell and on Monday a weird contest, unlike any of their previous meetings, saw Mitchell win by the unusual score of 12-8. At the end of two periods, Mitchell held an unbelievable 9- 1 lead and it appeared it would be a case of seeing how many they could score. The Clinton boys had other ideas and came on late in the third period to scare. the Mitchell crew—outscoring the latter 7-3 in the third to illustrate the unpredictable aspect of the game of hockey, Neil Colquhoun scored the only goal of the first two periods from Paul Priestap and Dave Counter. Rob McAdam got number two from Mike Gibbings and Jamie Thompson.
